Dear all,
I get the errors given below from "yum update". Does anyone know what is

Best wishes,

Fedora, ALSA and MIDI OH MY! (Theme to lions, tigers, and bears, oh my!)
by Dan Thurman
Folks,
Is it me or does Fedora have a real problem when
it has to deal with Sound cards?
I cannot for the LIFE OF ME figure out WHY is FEDORA
IMPOSSIBLE getting sound to work!?!?!? I can get
my CDROM to play music -- and wave files, etc but...
MIDI is one of those simple things that *should*
be working but alas -- no -- it is not simple...
it is said not to work very well....
I have tried a cheap Yamaha YMF-724F (DS-1) and a not-so-cheap
Creative Labs, SoundBlaster LIVE card and there is no way in
h$ll I can get midi to work for either cards!?!?!? I cannot
even figure out how to disable the KDE arts server since it
was removed from the KControl and so -- kindly -- how can I
disable it -- just in case it is preventing midi from working
right?
Yes, I scouraged goggle, AskJeves, etc. and it seems people
got these cards to work just fine on debian, Mandrake, Suze
but heck -- NOT ON FEDORA!?!? I tried this on FC-2 and FC-3.
Please, please, please, tell me -- how can I get MIDI to work?
I was told that for YMF-724F the following line should
be added in the /etc/modprobe.conf file:
options snd-ymfpci index=0 mpu_port=0x330
but -- nope! Does not work
As for the SB-Live card - no information how in what
to add to the modprobe.conf file....
Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Humbled....

sendmail-src RPM

I'm trying to build a new package for sendmail.
Anyone know what the sendmail-8.12.9-dynamic.patch suppose to accomplish?
I see it wants to modify a Makefile and it looks like it removes
strerror.c form the list.... but there are too many files listed there
to be exactly sure.
Thanks,
James

Fedora Dav Server
by Timothy A. Holmes
Good Afternoon All:
In the continuing process of managing our resources around here, the
next task on my list is to get the mozilla calander program running and
available for the folks here in the school. We currently use Exchange,
which can be quite clunky and intimidating, as well as not useable
outside (like for personal stuff) So I want to implement a simpler
easier system for our teachers to keep personal calendars on, and the
Mozilla Calendar (sunbird) looks like just the ticket. I have tried to
research the sharing function, and it specifies that I need a dav server
set up. I have checked my webserver, and mod_dav seems to be there, but
I am having a hard time determining if it is doing what it is supposed
to do, and then how to make sunbird upload / Share calendars. If there
is a better way to achieve this, please let me know I am open to other
programs even, but they need to be shareable across the internet,
windows compatible, and open source / freeware.
The box that my webserver is running on is Fedora Core 2 fully patched
with apache and sendmail installed
Thanks
TIM

RE: how do I set 'home' for root
by Erik Hemdal
Also, I took a look at the two files but I can't interpret them - I'm
reading
man Bash now, but, any suggestions on what I should be looking for? Here's
what they look like:
# .bash_profile
Name of this file, which is only run, or "sourced", at login, so once
per session.
# Get the aliases and functions
if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
. ~/.bashrc
fi
The above command checks to see if the file /root/.bashrc exists in the
user's home directory, and runs the file if it exists. The .bashrc file
can be unique for each user, so that individual users can customize
their shells to their liking. Everytime you open a new shell, this file
is run, unlike .bash_profile.
# User specific environment and startup programs
PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
Change the $PATH variable so it includes everything it had before
(possibly set by what is in .bash_profile) and add the path /root/bin
to it (assuming you're trying to run as root). This would not work
unless $HOME has a good value.
export PATH
This makes the PATH visible to child shells that might be forked off
when you execute a command, etc.
unset USERNAME
This removes the value of the shell variable $USERNAME so it has no value.
# .bashrc
# User specific aliases and functions
alias rm='rm -i'
This alias replaces the 'rm' command with 'rm -i', so that root will
always be prompted before removing any file. This is a safety precaution.
alias cp='cp -i'
alias mv='mv -i'
Same deal for the copy and move commands. Since root can manipulate
files for which he does not have explicit permission, he can do a lot of
damage. These aliases try to give you a little protection in case a
typo causes you to work on files you don't intend.
# Source global definitions
if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then
. /etc/bashrc
fi
This looks for a copy of a .bashrc file in the /etc directory. The
system administrator can use this file to set up shell-by-shell
customizations that will take effect anytime a user starts a shell. If
this kind of shell code is used in every user's .bashrc, it can let the
administrator make everyone's shells work in a consistent, customized way.

Apache now stops running -- eAccelerator conflicts w/ MMcache !?!?
by Dan Thurman
Folks,
Sigh... I found the following in my Apache Error logs file
and this was because I cannot run my Apache Web server. As
far as I know, I never installed eAccelerator on my system and
then this pops up...
Can anyone shed light as to what I need to do to remove this
error so that my HTTP server can run again?
I checked rpm -qa | grep -i eAccelerator
and nothing comes up.

trying to setup for a remote installation
by bruce
hi...
new to setting up kickstart for remote installation.
here's what i'd like to do. i'd like to be able to remotely access a server,
and use VNC to graphically go through the fedora installation process. the
server currently has RH8 on it.
as we understand it, you can place the FC3 isos on a HD on another system,
and access the isos via the kickstart file. however, our questions have to
do with how/what to do to implement what we're trying to do.
so.. our questions...
-can we do what we want to do, allowing us to use VNC
-can the kickstart file be created, and placed on the targeted system's HD.
-if the kickstart file can be placed on the targeted system's HD, where
should
it go?? (what dir should it be placed in...)
-would the targeted kickstart file have the VNC 'hooks' in the kickstart
file
-would this allow us to use VNC to then graphically install FC3 on the
targeted system
any help/ideas/opinions/comments would be helpful...
we don't want to somehow screw this up!!

Misery loves company. At least it just not me. I'm putting the 32 bit back on, guess I'll wait for the next version!
Thanks!
