remotely driving/running Fedora Install
by bruce
hi...
i'm somewhat confused. i'm researhcing various articles/sites to determine
how to remotely install Fedora using the graphical install. I'd like to be
able to have VNC start, and allow me to select the items from the remote
Fedora install, as if i were at the machine with a keyboard/mouse. the
articles i've seen talk about monitoring the process. The information that
i've seen regarding the kickstart file, imples that you pretty much set the
system, and it does the configuration for you.
i'd really like to be able to somehow remotely step through the Fedora
install using vnc if possible.
so, is there a way to accomplish this?

What process throttles CPU?
by Steve Snyder
Yesterday, while doing a large build on an FC3 machine, I received
many warnings from the kernel that the CPU clock speed was being
adjusted due to the temperature beyond the threshhold.
Considering the machine I was using (a Dell Precision Xeon box), I can
certainly believe the warnings. I wonder, though, how the kernel
knew the threshhold.
My first thought was the info beneath /proc/acpi/,
yet /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/ is empty.
I then thought of cpuspeed, but the /etc/cpuspeed.conf file is just a
sample and had only commented-out config parameters.
So... how does the kernel know what the thermal threshhold is for a
given system?
Thanks.

[OT] Changing the case of filenames
by David Niemi
I am running a fortran program which requires all input file names to be
uppercase. As things were originally done in Windo$e all the filenames
are mixed case (with numbers).
Searching around I came across the "tr" command, but my difficulty comes
in trying to use this from the command line (or even in a bash script).
mv * | tr [a-z] [A-Z]
Does not work as mv requires a directory for the objective with multiple
files. All of the scripts that I have seen are mainly for changing the
case of text in a text file so wouldn't work for me.
So, how would I do this?

Try adding "acpi_sleep=s3_bios" to the kernel line in
your /bot/grub/grub.conf file. If that does not work try "pci=noacpi
acpi_sleep=s3_bios" instead.
Good luck.

[OT?] PoPToP Problems
by Edward Dekkers
Sorry for posting here fellas (and ladies), but after a week, I'm not
getting any replies from the PoPToP list. I'm hoping one or more of you
have used PoPToP and can help me get it going. Maybe Alexander Dalloz
even has this answer in his almighty brain - he seems to know everything
else :)
Here goes - FC3 All Updates and the latest PoPToP installed and
receiving requests. All the PoPToP installation steps have been followed
as per instructions and versions checked. I do not honestly think the
problem lies there.
The problem seems to stem from me running pppd in demand mode or the way
I call pppd to dial my ISP (yes I'm on the most wonderful invention
called dial-up).
PoPToP sees the incoming connection, but as it hands off to pppd, pppd
seems to terminate unexpectantly, and I think it has to do with the way
my dial-up is set up, because chat also gets called to dial my ISP when
all this happens, even though this is obviously unnecessary, as I am
already connected.
While all this is going on, my ppp0 internet connection remains live.

Apparently I'm supposed to see a
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/0
Or something like that somewhere (although in my case should it be
ppp1?), but pppd dies before it hits that stage.
I don't seem to have a pppd log anywhere even though option DEBUG=yes is
set.
Any ideas anyone? At this stage I'll take anything, otherwise I'm going
to have to dump it in favour of some other VPN road warrior solution
which is not going to be anywhere near as convenient when you consider
PPTP is built into Windows XP clients.

Ed.

Help with login problem!
by FS
Hello all,
I set up a new FC1 machine yesterday and created a user "newuser"
using "adduser newuser" and changed its password.
When I try to ssh to the said account, it doesn't work. The connection
opens, accepts my password and then closes instantly. Trying to "su -
newuser" or "su newuser" result in a "could not open session"
Interestingly enough, FTP does work!
Googling seems to point to permissions problem but I can't figure out
where or what. The /etc/passwd is 644, /etc/group is 644 and
/etc/shadow is 600. Permissions for the home directory are fine too.
Any help/tips appreciated!

FC3 install hangs "reading package info"
by Terry Polzin
I admit it, I'm not up2date with new hardware issues and I believe that this
is one. I've just built a new machine with a 2.8ghz processor 256mb RAM 50g
HD etc 16x DVD +- RW. All the latest hardware.
Now I've installed enough systems and this is the first time I've seen
something like this. It makes no difference if the install media is CD or
DVD, the install hangs while reading package info or after (maybe while)
formatting the partitions.
I've tried using the noidedma option at boot and that doesn't appear to help.
Nothing on the F3 or F4 screens seem to indicate a problem, running top on F2
shows anaconda running merrily.
What additional diagnostic information do I need to provide?
THANKS,
Terry

clamav and spam assassin
by Ankush Grover
Hey friends,
I recently configured Mail server and Samba server on FC3 for my
company. Both the servers are on the same machine.I have few questions.
a) I have installed clamav and when i run freshclam from the command
prompt it updates itself the cron is automatically set when I
installed it.Now the question is how I can know the date of the update
means in Windows you can see the virus definitions date on the
Antivirus ,I want to see the same date on the clamav so that I should
be able to know whether the clamav is getting updated or not and If it
is not getting updated i should run the freshclam once a weekly
manually.
b) How do I know whether the clamav is working properly or not.
c) As mentioned before clamav is installed on a system running as Mail
and Samba server. If there is any windows/linux virus/worm on the
machine will the Clamav will clean itself or i have to run the clamav
for deletion of those infected files.Does clamav runs automatically
once a week for scanning of the system if not I would like to
configure clamav for that .Please tell me which clamav file to set for
cron and also how to make the clamav do like first cleaning of
infected files and if the cleaning of the infected files is not
possible then deleting it.This type of action can be set in
Antiviruses in Windows.
d) I want to configure spam assassin As spam assassin is installed and
running I want to configure for few lists .Please tell me any
tutorials or the configuration for spam assassin.
Thanks & Regards

ans. u can check the logs and all the information is
present there. Be careful i am talking about freshclam logs because it
is used to update virus defination files.
b) How do I know whether the clamav is working properly or not.
ans. through logs..........and through mail headers. the scan
result clean or infected is written there........
c) As mentioned before clamav is installed on a system running as Mail
and Samba server. If there is any windows/linux virus/worm on the
machine will the Clamav will clean itself or i have to run the clamav

ans. if u have integrated clamav to run with sendmail........a
line has to written in sendmail, then it will automatically scan all
the mails for all types of worms which are coming on port 25 or
handled by sendmail.
d) I want to configure spam assassin As spam assassin is installed and
running I want to configure for few lists .Please tell me any
tutorials or the configuration for spam assassin.
ans. As far as i know i don't think that it can be done only for few
lists........correct me if i am wrong..........
