X crashes when logging in via gdm
by Peter L. Hurd
Hey Everyone,
I have two problems:
1) One user on a FC2 box cannot log via the default-session. She can
log in via GNOME (which _is_ the default ?!?!?!) when she gets prompted
to suggest she make this the default via switch-desktop. She cannot
change via switch desktop, looks like some file she doesn't have
permission to write to... What could it be?
2) I updated an FC2 box to FC3, and now it seizes up whenever a gnome
application is run. Gdm runs fine, but logging into anything but the
failsafe-default session locks the computer up. If I launch gnome-
session, or a gnome app from the failsafe-session xterm that will lock
the machine up. I can ssh -Y into the machine and run gnome apps just
fine... I think there is some weirdness with the install not updating
all the packages (the old FC2 kernels were not deleted by the upgrade).
I cannot find any helpful error messages in Xorg.log, /tmp/xses*
or /var/log/messages... Any hints?
Thanks,
-P.

Webmin / Usermin and port blocking
by Bob Brennan
Webmin and Usermin are accessed remotely through ports 10000 and 20000
respectively - as in http://www.myserver.net:20000
I work in a company that blocks port 20000 and all other non-essential
outgoing port requests. Are there any alternative ways of accessing a
port-bound service like this to get around secure large company sites
that block direct port connections?
I guess what I'm asking is about ways to access Usermin as a straight
HTTP:// connection (ie http://www.myserver.net/usermin) rather than
port 20000 by making changes on my server.
Thanks in advance,
bob

bugzilla vs private mail.
by Dave Jones
Folks,
Sending me private mails about bugs isn't going to help
get things fixed any quicker. Please, bugzilla is there
as a tool to ensure things don't get lost.
With the god-alone-knows how many mails I already get from
bugzilla each day (and various lists), it's an almost
guaranteed way for things to get lost in the noise.
I'm bringing this up now, as there seems to be a steady increase
in this happening over the last few weeks for unknown reasons.

Upgrade from redhar#t6 to fedoracore 2
by Larry Cotton
Hi
I've just upgraded from redhat 8 to fedoracore 2. The upgade seems to
have gone wel but there are a couple of teething problems:
1) When I rebooted after the install about 8 error dialogs with the message:
Error activating XKB configuration.
Probably internal X server problem.
X server version data:
The X.Org Foundation
60700000
If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb
appeared. And on rebooting there after I still get one of these. My
desktop settings have also gone, which I guess is a part of this
problem.
2) An error occured at startup when the system attempted to start
httpd. When I try to strart it manually I get an error:
Starting httpd: /usr/sbin/httpd: error while loading shared libraries:
/usr/lib/libaprutil-0.so.0: undefined symbol: gdbm_errno
[FAILED]
Anyone know seen either of these problems before or know anything about them ?

mobile i915 graphics at high resolutions
by Christopher J. Bottaro
I just bought a laptop with "Integrated Intel® Media Accelerator 900
Graphics". I read on a website:
http://www.geetduggal.com/linux_on_inspiron_6000.html
that the max resolution one can get is 1600x1200 with the current x.org
drivers.
Has anyone had any other experience? The native resolution of my laptop is
1920 x 1200. Running anything different than the native resolution results
in poor picture quality. Also, I paid substantially more for the higher
resolution display, I would like to use it.
If there is no hope for this, I still have time to return my laptop and get
a similar one with an ATI PCI-E card, which I'm pretty sure will work to
maximum potential with the proprietary ATI drivers. I don't want to do
this though because it uses a lot more power than the integrated Intel
chip.
Any advice or opinions are welcome, thank you.

I created the 50-local.permissions file as suggested, but no joy. I also
substituted ...:root:... with ...:$local:... but again no success. I could
not see reference to the 50-local.permissions file in the man page. Should
the layout be the similar to 50-udev.permissions, with only the relevant
lines? Is a soft or hard link from /dev/hdc -> cdrom still needed with this
fix?
Thanks

After FC2-> FC3, korganizer screwy
by Greg Trounson
Hi,
After my upgrade from FC2 to FC3, Korganizer is doing strange things.
Every Appointment and Todo that was created prior to the upgrade is
displayed twice, so apparently I have two lunchtime appointments today!
Deleting any one item causes both instances to be deleted upon reload.
When entering a new appointment or todo, a Resource Selection dialog
appears, with a choice of two resources, both named "Active Calendar".
Depending on which resource I choose, the appointment is either not
saved to the ics file and disappears from the calendar after a few
minutes, or appears twice as per older items. Occasionally this action
will make korganizer segfault.
Obviously this is a show-stopper for anyone who depends on korganizer
for scheduling their day.
The only clues I get on the command prompt are the following:
QGArray::at: Absolute index -4 out of range
QDate::fromString: Parameter out of range
QLayout "unnamed" added to QFrame "unnamed", which already has a layout
QInputContext: cannot create input context for non-toplevel widgets
Any ideas?

Re: fc3 - raid 1 setup problems
by rado

It does. There may appear a problem with grub and SATA though - see
bugzilla.
I had read before but don't know exactly what SATA is only to know that
I don't have that technology w/these drives. They just a pair of WD
120GB drives

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-4-Manual/x8664-multi-i...
this page referred me to the following:
software RAID — Creating two or more software RAID partitions allows you
to create a RAID device. For more information regarding RAID, refer to
the chapter RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) in the Red Hat
Enterprise Linux System Administration Guide.
....and it's just not there...I could find no chapter there on
RAID...the only thing I did find was the beginner's sys admin
guide..just a short explanation of the diff, raids etc...NOT an
up-to-date HOWTO, shall we say on the specific operating sys. that we
talking about ...Enterprise or FC3.
I want to note also that I see you help so many on here, Alexander, and
that is really commendable and I sure ty for that.
