java virtual machine
by Langer, Christian
I was installing Lime Wire on my FC3 machine, and the message came back
that I needed Java Virtual Machine. I found JVM on the internet, and
the JVM website has no Linux download, just windows. Is there any other
place to get JVM for linux?

Good points both. To Dale's post, consider the overhead of encrypted email
as with GPG/PGP. It is possible to assure the integrity and source of an
email message using GPG keys. But this assumes that both sender and
recipient have key pairs, that the keys are not compromised, that the sender
has access to the recipient's public key, and that the recipient has access
to (and trust in) the sender's public key.
Quite a lot of infrastructure needed just to send a message.
GPG keys on packages work because the situation is different:
The value of a package is higher to the recipient than that of many email
messages.
There is no need to validate the identity of the recipient, as is done for
email messages, when distributing packages.
There are far fewer keys for users to manage. It would be a different
matter entirely if every package and every update required acquiring a
unique key, as is potentially the case for email messages, where there are
many senders and many recipients.
A useful model remains that of physical mail systems. "Snail mail" postal
systems have a number of built-in advantages that email systems do not have:
A trusted channel. Although theft of the mail is possible, physical mail is
handled by a national postal organization. No one sends mail by giving it
to his neighbors in a form that they can read, and asking them to pass it
along. Users do not have to have any kind of special mailbox or key to use
this trusted channel.
A legal framework and enforcement capability. There is an established
understanding in each nation about what constitutes legal and illegal use of
the mail.
Standards for acceptable and unacceptable mail. Postal authorities can
refuse mail that is dangerous or unfit for the mail stream.
An economic model that encourages responsible use of the mail. The majority
of the cost of sending mail is borne by the sender and not the recipient.
The cost of sending messages increases with the size, distance, and quantity
of messages to be sent. Quite the opposite is true of email.
Without these, we are left to sort our own mail, so to speak. With these in
place, email would be quite different than it is today.

RE: Browse Samba server from XP
by Irving, Dave
> Is your samba server set up for USER or SHARE security?
Originally I hadn't specified any security level - so would have been
using the default.
I just tried "security = share", and its getting even more
interesting....
XP brings up a log-on dialog, with the user name fixed as
"...NetBIOSName...\guest", but still requires a password to be entered
(Im not sure what password it's even after...).
P.s, sorry about the top-posting yesterday everyone - I've not really
used email based forums a great deal before so Im still brushing up on
my etiquette

Keep Authorization
by GONZALEZ, Jose A.
Hello,
I have the Fedora Core 2 release and I keep getting a key in my task bar
when trying to use a system app or even to check services. When I click
on the key I get a popup message asking:
"Question -- You're currently authorized to configure system-wide
settings (that affect all users) without typing the administrator
password again. You can give up this authorization." -Keep
Authorization-- --Forget Authorization-(Two Buttons).
When I click on "Keep Authorization" the key stays in the tray and
nothing happens. When I click on "Forget Authorization" the key
disappears but again nothing happens and I still can't open a system
settings application such as services.
Has anyone seen this before and can help? Thanks

Screen Locking Problems
by Ryan McDougall
Hi All,
I'm sorry about this but I have looked for some things on this but
can't seem to find a solution or an exact problem.
We have FC2 on a Dell machine but the user likes to lock the screen
using the xscreensaver option on the redhat menu. Ok this works most
of the time BUT every once in a while he will come in the next
morning, after having locked the screen the night before, and the
screen will be unlocked and open. Has anyone else had this issue or
does anyone know how to go about fixing it?
Also we tried to use xlockmore from the DAG wiers repository and the
install seemed to work but the user just emailed me and stated that
xlock wouldn't accept his password. And after he hit the enter key
several times it just let him in anyway. So if we could find a
solution to either of those that would be AWESOME.
Thanks all,
Ryan

Boot problems after latest FC3 updates
by labman
Hi all
first cry for help here so bear with me, I've been monitoring the list
for the last few days hoping someone else had experienced the same
problem but looks like it is peculiar to me.
I've been running FC3 for about 6wks now and it's been rock solid and
a good learning experience for this newbie. I ran the update routine
earlier this week to install the latest available updates (about 15 of
them) including a kernel update, now it won't boot to the new kernel.
I've managed to turn "rhgb quiet" off from the grub screen so I could
get a better idea of what's happening, from what I can see the boot
gets as far as "Enabling swap space" [ok] then stalls.
For info: When I installed FC3, it came with the 2.6.9-1.667 kernel.
Since then, I successfully updated to the 2.6.10-1.760_FC3 kernel. It
booted ok and ran well.
When I ran my update this week, the kernel was updated to
2.6.10-1.766_FC3. It will not boot, and nor will the previous kernel.
The 2.6.9-1.667 kernel still boots fine.
Not sure where to go from here. What's next in the boot routine? What
could be stopping it at that point? Can I re-run the update somehow?
Am I better off just sticking with the older kernel? Opinions welcome.
regards
Labman

FC3 : Scsi Emulation Problem
by Ahmed Abdel-Aliem
Hi,
i have a problem with writing CDs using X-CD-Roast on Gnome.
when i make the configurations for it and choose the writer device it
gives me this message
---
you have selected an ATAPI decive as your CD-Writer.
This is not a recommended setup- you will experience
long delays within X-CD-Roast and bad writing performance.
See the FAQ how to properly install scsi-emulation for best results.
--
my DVD-Writer is SAMSUNG DVD-R/RW SH-W08A
when i tried fedora core 3 first time on my computer X-CD-Roast
detected it as a scsi device.
i searched through google and found that the problem is about a scsi
module, but didn't get more information on my problem.
can anyone tell me how to fix this ?
