Modprobe command
by Wayne Siemund
When I try to use this command as root super user, it tells me it's an invalid command.
any ideas?
Apparently it is needed as part of installing the ALSA sound card drivers.

Fedora Core administration in right way
by Marcin Szarek
Hello!
I'm quite experienced sysadmin, but only for a short time I maintain
servers with Fedora Core onboard. Thus I've got some questions.
First I'm very curious if/where could I find some compact documentation
for FC - such as FreeBSD or Solaris manuals? Also, I'd like to know
where can I find various informations regarding administering Fedora in
right-way, for example: where to store system-wide variables like
language settings, what system accounts exist in fedora and what role do
they actually act?
Sorry, but I find docs section at fedora.redhat.com very incomplete and
extremely poor.
So if you could point me to some materials from which I can learn Fedora
better, I would be very thankful.
TIA!
Best regards,

Sorry, there was a typo in my first post.
Nmap did not show ports 389 or 636 being open.

File permissions when ftp
by Jay Paulson
Hello everyone!
I've set up a group called 'www' on my machine. There are two users in
that group 'user1' and 'user2'. When I connect to my FC3 box via ftp
as 'user1' and then upload a file to the web directory the owner and
group of that file are user1.user1. Since this is the case user2 is
able to download the file and make changes to it locally. However,
user2 is unable to upload the file because the file owner and group on
the server is user1.user1.
My question is how do I make it so that when user1 and user2 connect to
the server and upload files they are grouped under the 'www' group and
not under each username group? I created the group www with the
/usr/sbin/groupadd www and then added each user to the the www group
using the /usr/bin/gpasswd -a username www.
Any ideas on how I can get this to work correctly?
Thanks,
jay

OT: hardware changelog software
by Ben Steeves
Our IT department is interested in knowing what system your
organization uses to manage server maintenance and repair logs. We are
currently rethinking the way we record our logs. After discussions
with many of our system administrators, we have decided that we would
like to record:
1. Major Hardware/Software Failures and Their Resolutions
2. Server Hardware and Firmware Additions and Changes
3. Configuration Changes to Operating System and Major Applications
4. Major, Manual Software/Operating System Upgrades
We would like to keep the recording of each of those types of changes
simple and easy to do.
>From our experience, if it takes too long or too much effort, updates
will not be recorded.
Thus we would like to keep the log entries down to brief, 2-3 sentence
paragraphs.
We're interested in deploying a system to manage the updating,
searching and reporting of logs. From our requirements, it does not
look like we need a very complex system. What system does your
organization use to manage your logs? Do you know of another
open-source or commercial product that would meet our needs?

bzip2 ZendStudio-3_5_2.bin
[root@localhost ZendStudio-3_5_2]# bzip2

[root@localhost ZendStudio-3_5_2]# bunzip2
bunzip2: I won't read compressed data from a terminal.

[root@localhost ZendStudio-3_5_2]# bunzip2 ZendStudio-3_5_2.bin

RE: Keep Authorization
by GONZALEZ, Jose A.
Actually, I meant that it doesn't matter which option I choose. I never
get the password option to use system setting tools. I only get the key
question again on every attempt to use a system setting tool. Sorry
about the html, it was my first time posting.

If I say "keep authorisation" I can use any other application which
requires root permissions. If I say "forget authorisation" just a second
later the icon disappears from notification area and I need to reenter
the root password to use privileged tools.
So, it acts like it shall.

You might want to see if the .04 series (MUA and Data-Server) addresses
these issues.
Are these available as RPMs? Or should I suck it up and compile from source?
