grub segfaults on x86_64 SATA
by Phil Schaffner
Starting a new thread as the last related one "Re: Grub install broken
after kernel update" seemed to be generating more heat than light.
The problem (which seems to be similar to another one mentioned in the
thread mentioned above):
Installed a new larger/faster SATA disk, copied/configured/booted FC3
installation, and attempted to reconfigure grub to use the new /boot
partition. Attempting to run grub or grub-install to update boot record
results in "Segmentation fault". The old MBR is not changed. Cannot
create a grub floppy either due to segfault, although a grub floppy
created on a i686 system can be used to boot the x86_64 smp system, as
can the instance of grub created by anaconda on the original SATA disk.
Not sure if this may be an x86_64smp, or a SATA problem, or ???. The
problem has persisted through multiple kernel upgrades. Details can be
seen in the Bugzilla report
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=147600
Any suggestions appreciated, as would be any comments or action on the
Bugzilla item.
Thanks,
Phil

Yes, that's helpful. One small typo, each of the four pages has the
same heading:
FC3 RPM List By Disk - Disk 1
You probably meant to change the 1 to a 2, 3, and 4 on the other pages.
It may also be worth pointing out that just looking for the main
packages you want to install won't tell you the whole story since it
doesn't take dependencies into account.

RE: Keep Authorization
by GONZALEZ, Jose A.
I'm new to Linux and I don't think I understand your responses. Does
this mean there's a bug here or something I changed that made this Key
authorization issue take place? Is there a fix? - Joe

Hmmm -- or maybe this is a job for dbus. Everyone loves dbus!

For X-cdroast Users
by David Curry
Several FC3 users who were acustomed to using X-cdroast, or prospective
X-cdroast users, have reported protests from the program about needing
scsi emulation. Assuming that X-cdroast, like K3b, is a Gui front-end
for cdrecord I'm wondering if their difficulties in getting X-cdroast to
work could be solved by identifying the cdrom device in
/etc/cdrecord.conf as an ATA or ATAPI device as in
cdrom=ATA:1,0,0 -1 -1 burnfree

CDROM mounting
by Greg Viola
Hi:
First, I want to thank you guys for helping me unravel how to get the
install disks created from the FC3 ISO download files. Worked great.
Now I am trying to use the CD drive (which is fairly old, but its the
one I used to install FC3) , and I get an error - "cannot read
superblock" - when I insert a CD into the drive and FC3 tries to mount
the CD. CD reads fine in WinXP. Get the same error with commercial
audio CDs. Can't open the drive either once I get this error. XMMS and
GRIP both report drive errors. CD Roast wants me to make the drives
emulate SCSI, but I haven't tried that yet.
Also, how do I get FC3 to recognize my second CD drive (brand new CD/DVD
drive)
Both drives are on the second IDE controller. The old drive is master,
new one slave
Thanks

Network Manager
by David Donnelly
I am very impressed with this program. Good work to the creator(s).
http://fedoranews.org/contributors/jim_lawrence/network_manager/
I am using ndiswrapper with a built-in wifi (broadcom chipset) on a
Compaq R3000 laptop. I have not previously been able to scan other
available networks or view signal strength because of the fact I am
using ndiswrapper. This has given me that ability.
However, having the ability to view multiple choices means that I can
see all my neighbour's as well. I am just wondering if there is a way to
specify a "preferred" network. My SSID is not encrypted but does not
broadcast either. I can connect if I specify the SSID. I also would like
to know if I can automate the connection process on boot that it trys to
connect to my SSID. The Network Manager Daemon starts but I need to run
"NetworkManagerInfo" from the console to start a scan. I would like this
process to start automatically if possible. When I do run the command,
it connects to my neighbour even though I was last connected to my own
access point.

David Donnelly

Hi All,
how weird is this. Hacksaw, you sent a reply suggesting chmod 1777 /tmp,
which my work PC retrieved, whilst leaving all mail on server, but, when
getting home, my PC doesn't retrieve it, but, when checking via web
access, the email is there...truly a weird one. Ok, the chmod 1777 /tmp
didn't change anything, still got the same error when starting X Server.
Starting to annoy me. Been more tha 2 weeks now. This weekend is lookin
good for a re-install of FC3. Cheers.
Time-Zone/Date Time on Knoppix3.7:
Even though I configure it correctly, and save my config before shutting
down, it always appears wrong at the next boot. Sorry, Paul. Sometimes I
forget to check it b4 sending mail.
