Files that are frequently updated will often have some level of
fragmentation. Files that are relatively unchanged tend to be in a
single extent. Also, the stuff in /bin will generally be small, tight,
command line programs. A quick perusal of those listed in your example
shows a number of graphical interface programs that are anything but
small and don't even get me started about the size of emacs (the
probability of change to a program is very directly related to the size
of the program).
I recently upgraded my desktop system with a much larger hard drive. The
old hard drive is now in an external hard drive enclosure (the kind
made by Metal Gear Box) and is plugged in to a USB port. The old drive
has these partitions
Microsoft Windows XP -- 30 Gb
Fedora Core 4 -- 30 Gb
My problem is, I can see the /boot partition on the drive, but I cannot
see the / (root) partition, and I'm want to get at my former home
directory because I have some files there I forgot to back up. I'm
wondering if that partition was named something like:
'/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00' and mounted on /.

I'd like to start a calm, respectful, reasonable discussion of the reasons
that we tell people to RTFM, or reasons that people don't get their
questions answered on mailing lists and usenet groups.
I'm not complaining about anything or anybody, just wanting to start some
discussion which might lead to more answers and less 'noise'.
No one has been disrespectful to me, don't get the wrong idea.
I personally am a former Microsoft Certified Professional in NT Server 4.0,
have used operating systems including, PC DOS, MS DOS, OS/2 Warp, all
flavors of Windows through XP Pro (except ME, which sucked sooo bad), Linux,
FreeBSD, and currently, Mac OS X Tiger.
I've administered networks consisting of hundreds of workstations and dozens
of servers, installed lans and wans from scratch, taught Windows operating
systems, software and networking.
I feel that might just barely qualify me as knowing a little about
computers, and I say that seriously...'a little'.
There are a lot of things I don't know, and when I run out of research
options, or get frustrated when all the troubleshooting solutions don't
work, I'm heading for usenet or a mailing list, because time after time,
that has been the resource that provided the solution. A wise man once told
me, "Someone out there has solved that problem, you just have to find them."
I don't really know where to start, so here are some random thoughts...
Maybe I got told to RTFM because I missed something in it? Well, could you
just politely point me to the section I missed, please? Or give me a link
to a howto or some html page where it is explained?
Maybe the question has been answered in the FAQ for the list? Just point me
to it, you don't have to say anything else.
I've seen lots of posts to this list and others with no subject or a subject
that has nothing to do with the question, but the question was answered
respectfully. So, when I post with a good subject, one that will show up in
a Google search, help me out.
Many lists and groups regularly autopost the guidelines for posting, FAQ,
and relevant howto pages, point me to those when necessary.

it important, but what's wrong with a spoon full of sugar now and then?

I've very confused when it comes to burning dvd's and software. really need help here ? I have extract the file using winrar:
The files i have is Fedora Images isolinux whats the software to use to burn the disc with ? and what file do i bring in when burning
I wonder if that would affect me as i am planning on doing 1 raid
device at first, (the 4 300GB's) and making a LVM out of it. Then
adding another device later with the 4 500's and adding in the new LVM
drives into the current group. So i would have >2tb but it would be
spread across 2 raid devices and 8 disks.

I need to develop a software for a small company, but I really feel that I
want to make it all based on free-software... The software will include some
code (Duh) which I will write in Java, along with a DBMS...
So, I was thinking of using Eclipse for developing the software, and using
the new free Oracle 10g-Express
Have any of you tried this combination before? I think I'm settled about
using Eclipse to develop the software, but how about the DBMS? Suggestions?
I think the numbers need to change on the amount of memory required to
install Fedora Core 4.
Doing an "install everything" in graphical mode on a 256meg machine fails
with out of memory errors. (It seems to ignore the swap space at that
point, thinking it has enough memory.)
Text install of "everything" works fine on the same machine.

I want to install Firefox 1.5 but Yum does not provide it. So I looked
for rpms on the net and found a few for Fedora, but none are in
Hebrew. Before I install from the oficial tarball, I have some
concerns that I would like some input on:
1) If I install from the tarball, yum will no longer update Firefox.
Can I tell yum to maintain it anyway?
2) I did locate and found that most ff files are in
/usr/lib/firefox-1.0.7/ . Can I just unpack the new 1.5 tarball in
/usr/lib/firefox-1.5/ and have them live side by side?
3) I currently can type the command "firefox" in the command line to
start Firefox. Will this change to start 1.5 if I install them side by
side? If not, how do I correct it?
