k3b: the king of wasting disks
by Paul Smith
Dear All
With
$ k3b -v
Qt: 3.3.5
KDE: 3.5.0-2.2.fc4.kde
K3b: 0.12.10
$
growisofs does not execute cleanly for whatever video DVD project I
make to be recorded on a DVD+R disk. (Six new disks wasted by k3b.)
Is there a good alternative to k3b?

Thanks Craig. I didn't know that Google trick.
My $.02 on the main topic of this thread. Requests for assistance should:
1) Have a clear concise statement of the problem as the subject.
2) Should start off with a re-statement of what the problem is that
expands on the subject.
3) If necessary, include the steps the poster has already taken or other
pertinent information.
This tends to allow verbose posts to get answered since people who have
some idea of the solution can understand the problem without having to
wade through a lot of material. My time is limited (and I'm guessing so
is everybody else) so I like to be able to *quickly* determine whether I
can help with a particular problem or not.
It would be nice if the Fedora web site were to have an easy to find
"getting help" section that, besides pointing to this list, also
included some hints such as the above for searching and maybe even some
basic stuff like using "man -k" and other tools such as grep to RTFM
successfully.
Cheers,
Dave

OT: Personal Diary/Journal Software
by Paul Lemmons
I am looking for a personal diary/journal package that will run under
Linux (if I have to, I can use Open office but that is only a last
resort). The simpler the better but it must have encryption built-in.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

ssh security
by Gerald
It looks like i'm getting a dictionary attack on my system. I moved
ssh to another port instead of 22 in hopes that would put a halt to it
but it did not. Any recommendations to improve security here? I notice
these attacks come from a variety of IP's so pursuing one individual
is probably not worthwhile.

Disk defragmenter in Linux
by Fajar Priyanto
Hi all,
A today's mail from one of the new comer brings me this question again in my
mind. Linux disk defragmenter. Does it really not needed?
I've been googling around and find that this matter has been discussed as
early as 1998. And it seems that the only distro that provides a defragmenter
program is debian.
There are several way of fixing a heavy defragmented disk in Linux, but the
easiest way is to copy all of the content of the partition into another
place, completely erase that partition, and copy back the content.
My own experience shows me just that. My /home partition was almost full with
only 2% freespace. During that time, my Kmail became very slow such as when
downloading email or when I moved between mail folders. The harddisk was just
spinning all the time.
Then I copy all my files and mails from the /home partition and move them all
to another partition. Then delete them from /home. After that, I copied some
of the files and mail back to /home in order to keep 20% of /home free. So
far the performance is ok.
However, still the question remains. If Linux ext3 doesn't need defragmenter,
and able to defrag itself, what is the process name? And when does it run?
Can I see it in action? Is there an utility to see on what percentage my
current defragmentation? I tried fschk but no luck.
Thank you,

terminal does not working
by Császár Péter
Hi !
Sorry for bad the mail before.
Have any body any idea about why I can't use my text mode terminal after X

I already have fully updated it. Could it be a problem, that the updates
made by apt from

Thank you!

Mailman port RH7.3/2.0.13 to FC4/2.1.5/Exim4
by Gary Stainburn
Hi folks
I'm trying to port my existing mailman setup to my new server. I've made note
of the change of filesystem layout and followed the instructions for
connecting to Exim4. I've configured Apache and the web interface to
mailman's working fine.
However, I've got two possibly related problems.
1) starting the new service fails as below:
[root@stan1 ~]# service mailman start
Starting mailman: Site list is missing: mailman
[FAILED]
[root@stan1 ~]#
In /var/log/mailman/error it shows:
[root@stan1 ~]# tail -f /var/log/mailman/error
Dec 12 22:42:15 2005 mailmanctl(5556): Site list is missing: mailman
Dec 12 22:42:15 2005 (5556) Site list is missing: mailman
2) sending emails doesn't work. I've configured exim4 as described (fixing the
path problem to the config.pck). I've included the bits I've added as well as
the extract from /var/log/exim/main.log that shows the incoming email being
processed. There are no other log entries however, not in messages,
main.log, or mailman/error.
[root@stan1 ~]# tail -f /var/log/exim/main.log

An mp3 ripping yarn
by David Fletcher
I've given my son an mp3 player for Christmas and of course I would like him
to be able to rip his CDs to mp3 files using Sound Juicer on his computer not
mine.
Yes I know that you can also get portable Ogg Vorbis players. I saw some at
Staples this afternoon. Unfortunately they're more than double the price of
the MP3 player I bought together with a 1G memory card.
On my computer which is running FC3 I can rip to mp3 just fine, using the
notes I compiled from the results of a couple of google searches:-
<MP3NOTES>
1) Put the following into /etc/yum.repos.d/Freshrpms.repo (might need to
change the first line to reflect the FC issue number:-
[freshrpms-fc-3]
name=Fedora Project $releasever - $basearch - freshrpms
baseurl=http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/$releasever/$basearch/fresh...
2) Import the GPG key:-
rpm --import http://svn.rpmforge.net/svn/trunk/rpms/yum/RPM-GPG-KEY-freshrpms
3) Install the plugins:-
yum install gstreamer-plugins-extra-audio
Now it should work!
Also might need to use yum install xmms-mp3 to get this working too.
</MP3NOTES>
I tried doing the same on his computer which is running FC4(replacing
[freshrpms-fc-3] with [freshrpms-fc-4]). Everything seems to install OK but
there is no mp3 option to select in the version 2.10.1 sound juicer on FC4.
My FC3 installation has sound juicer version 0.5.14.
Now my first question:- Has the mp3 selection been deliberately compiled out
of version 2.10.1 to prevent users ripping to mp3 at all even though the
plug-in is available elsewhere?
Second question:- If this is so, is it being put back into FC5?
Something I found out this morning is that if I insert an audio CD and let it
mount, I can then open it using Konqueror and browse to various folders, one
of which is called "mp3", containing objects which when dragged to the hard
drive causes Konqueror to rip tracks from the CD to mp3 files. Very nice, I
thought.
This operation can be configured using the Sound & Multimedia - Audio CDs
section of the KDE Control Centre.
Now my third question:- I cannot find the Audio CDs section in the Control
Centre on the FC4 machine, and the same audio CD won't mount. Is it supposed
to be there? If it is supposed to be there, the only explanation I can think
of is that perhaps the CD drive in this machine is an old one that does not
support some required functionality? If this is possible, can anybody please
suggest the age at which a CD drive might be too old? I can always go out to
the shops and buy a new one, but I'd like to feel reasonably sure that I'm
spending the money for a good reason.
Finally, something else I tried was to yum remove sound-juicer from FC4, and
replace it using an FC3 rpm from one of the mirrors. I also had to replace a
couple of libraries using rpms from the same place to get it to install. That
version under FC4 gave an error message. I can't remember the exact error
message but it was something to do with not being able to access the CD
drive, and a google search indicated that cdparanoia might be implicated in
this problem. At this point I thought sod it and just put the FC4 machine
back as it was.
But is there any possibility that cdparanoia was simply getting upset about
the CD drive itself, for the same reason that Audio CDs doesn't show up in
the Control Centre?
Many thanks to anybody who reads all this, and many many thanks to anybody who
can help.
Dave Fletcher
