snort
by Chris Norman
Hi people,
I have snort compiled and installed on my FC4 machine, but my question is,
how do I get it to run in the back ground, and then have it come into the
fourground and print to STDOut if and when it spots any problems?
Cheers,
Chris Norman

VDQ : Error inserting acpi_cpufreq
by Beartooth
What I find on googling is way over my head, alas!
I installed fedora 4 on three machines on my desk, way back
when it was new. Everything worked fine. Ran nightly yum updates ever
since. I now have well over a dozen kernels.
Then I had to replace my flat panel monitor (a BenQ FP767,
which died; the shop couldn't fix it) with another (a ViewSonic VG910b
-- the only one, of several the shop had, which was listed under Main
Menu > Desktop > System Settings > Display > Hardware > Configure).
At first, my main machine and one old one took the canned
settings, the main machine fine, the old one (a P2) usably; but the
other old P2 was unusable.
I fussed and fiddled, figuring out eventually for instance
that any changes had to be made completely without the KVM switch :
not only monitor but also keyboard and mouse plugged directly to the
machine being changed.
Finally I got the *other* old P2 to display usably -- and then
the one that had been usable ceased to be.
On the current problem machine, I get the error below when I
reboot. It follows below "Checking for new hardware" (which gets
marked OK)
FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq
(/lib/modules/2.6.14-1.1653_FC4/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko):No such device.
I've never done a blessed thing with kernels, beyond telling
yum to update them; too fierce to contemplate, for such a duffer as me
-- I could louse things up even worse than I often do as it is, right?
I don't want to now, if I can help it. But last time I even tried to
remove a kernel, I wrecked a machine to the point of having to
re-install Fedora.
So can someone tell me how to delete the problem one, or what
to do instead?
PS : I tried editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf one more time, making it
match that on a machine where the display works; logged out and in;
looked at the GUI display fixer; found no change; told it Cancel;
looked at /etc/X11/xorg.conf with pico -w one more time, and found
the changes had taken. I hit Ctrl-X to close pico with no changes,
then rebooted.
This time I chose the next to most recent kernel. The fatal
error message did not appear -- but all else was as before.
Again I rebooted, and chose one kernel earlier still, the next
to next to most recent. All results the same : error message gone,
display not changed (still failing to reflect the numbers in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf), /etc/X11/xorg.conf not changed.
I shut it down. Maybe I should go set it on a stump and
minister unto it with a sledgehammer.

GNome Un-install?
by Ali Helmy
Hey
I am currently using KDE on my FC4 system, and I dont need nor use Gnome 99%
of the time, so I wanted to remove it form the system. The Add/Remove
applications program can only remove certain packages from gnome, but not
all of it, nor its core files.
Is there anyway I can remove GNome DE?
PS: how can i know a package name for a certain program? i mean if i have
like, program x, or package x listed in the Add/Remove program, how do i get
to know its package name to remove it with rpm?
Thanks

e1000 module not loaded at startup
by Omer Faruk Sen
Hi,
I have a peculiar problem that I can't solve by my own. I have a server
installed rhes es4.2. After a power problem machine got rebooted. After
that e1000 eth module can't get loaded automaticly which was getting
loaded perfectly before without any problem. I have no idea why that
happens and want to ask why that might be. And will be glad if you show
help me about this problem.
Best Regards.

See the thread on finding a replacement for pine and why pine isn't
included with Fedora. The problem isn't so much one of distributing
both open source and closed source so much as not distributing software
that doesn't have a license that the Fedora packagers feel they can live
with. This is usually worse for closed source but there are open source
programs such as pine that don't meet the criteria.
I'm also guessing that there is a level of not wanting to include any
software that might be legally encumbered that makes including closed
source especially problematic. If nothing else, any such program that
isn't freely redistributable means someone within the Fedora
organization has to go off and research the license and possibly
negotiate a means for including the closed source program in Fedora.
I'm thinking the Fedora folks have better things to do with their time
and there is nothing to stop any of us users from deciding we can
individually live with somebody's closed source licensing terms.
Cheers,
Dave

Ripping a CD to MP3
by SternData
I've installed gstreamer-plugins-mp3. I've followed the instructions
from FedoraFAQ but I have two problems with Sound Juicer:
1. The MP3 settings don't appear in its preferences
2. It doesn't get any info about the CD. (CD Player, however, gets the
title and all track names.)
I'm without a clue right now.

Zbip2 Size limitatations ?
by Franck Y
Hi everyone,
I make several backup with bzip2, it seems that he has the better compression.
I do my backup like this for several folders.
tar cvf - /home/data/ | bzip2 -9 > /backup/data.tar.bz2
When i test the archive with bzip2 -t archive.tar.bz2, everything is
correct when the archive is under 1 Go. But i get CRC error when it's
upper ....
Has anyone experience this ?
