ATI OpenGL driver only works with an FC4 "everything" installation
by Stanton Finley
I've been doing installation tests on a laptop with onboard ATI
Technologies Inc ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955 (PCIE) video. I have found
that when I install the latest driver
(ati-driver-installer-8.20.8-i386.run) the graphics acceleration feature
does not take and "fglrxinfo" defaults back to the Mesa drivers *except*
when I do an "everything" install on FC4. When I install "everything" it
works and I get the proper message
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON XPRESS 200M Series SW TCL Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.3.5519 (X4.3.0-8.20.8)
when I do the "fglrxinfo" command. This happens even if I install kernel-devel and gcc.
I'm thinking there must be some program(s) that I get with the "everything" install that makes it possible to install the ATI driver. If anyone knows what it is please let me know so I can just install that program rather than the "everything" install.

yum rpm removal afte 'yum localinstall *.rpm'
by Bob Hartung
Hi all,
Been having problems with java. Followed info on the Fedora site to
make my own java-1.5.0.05 rpms with yum and then use the command to
install them on my test FC4. The command was
from within /home/test/rpmbuild/RPMS
sudo yum localinstall *.rpm
The command executed okay and properly filled all dependencies. Java
--version reports the proper version. So far okay. Got Tomcat4
installed as required by the program I am testing. It will not work
with > 1.4.2 java.
So I have removed Tomcat with yum. Now how do I remove the list of
java-1.5.0.05 rpms with yum. I have tried a variety of command forms
without luck. Or do I have to try to remove them 1 by 1 with rpm -e?
Tried this too, however, and rpm reports a slew of dependencies that may
take a lifetime (exagggeration somewhat!) to figure out.
help appreciated. I have tried to read the yum docs without much
success.
Thanks and a Happy New Year!

Dell GX520, Fedora 4: 1920x1200 on Dell 2405FP fails
by Jacques Beigbeder
Hello,
I don't find how to get 1920x1200 resolution on
the following hardware with Fedora Core 4 up-to-date:
Dell GX 520
Intel Chipset 945G
screen Dell 24" : 2405FP, native resolution: 1920x1200
I fail to get 1920x1200 with Xorg...
I can only get 1600x1200.
Searching on the Web gives some hints but with no luck:
. 915resolution doesn't support 1920x1200;
. writing in xorg.conf:
Modeline "1920x1200" 193.16 1920 2048 2256 2592 1200 1201 1204 1242
doesn't succeed
Any idea?

kppp doesn't know modem initialisation strings !
by Parameshwara Bhat
Hello List,
I am updated to latest (3.5) KDE from kde-redhat repository.When I run
kppp,(sudo /usr/sbin/kppp),
set correct modem port and ISP account. It just can't dial.
When I checked in the configure dialogs, under 'modem commands',nothing is
listed. Kppp has forgotten all the modem initialisation strings!
Now, I run it as user, again the same.No initialisation strings.I give the
chosen modem a name, save it and go to create a new modem, all the
initialisation strings are there. But I cannot run it as I have no access
right to modem as a user.
I go back and sudo again. This time, with the same procedure, there is no
luck.Kppp doesn't know anything about modem initialisation.
By the By, latest linux creates ownership for the user on all devices like
cdrom,floppy.
[pbhat@sidharth ~]$ ls -l /dev/hdc
brw------- 1 pbhat disk 22, 0 Dec 30 2005 /dev/hdc
[pbhat@sidharth ~]$ ls -l /dev/fd0
brw-rw---- 1 pbhat floppy 2, 0 Dec 30 2005 /dev/fd0
[pbhat@sidharth ~]$ ls -l /dev/ttySL0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Dec 30 14:26 /dev/ttySL0 -> /dev/pts/1
[pbhat@sidharth ~]$ ls -l /dev/pts/1
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 136, 1 Dec 30 15:45 /dev/pts/1
why not on modem? Is it safe to add normal users to 'uucp' group? or
change modem group to a new group like 'dialout' and make users its
members ?
I can 'sudo wvdial' successfully.
Thanks,
Parameshwara Bhat

KDE3.5: Failure in changing login scheme...
by Strong
I've upgraded FC4's KDE to KDE3.5. Before that I had beautiful login
scheme: I believe it was called BlueCurve and GUI style Keramik or in
reverse order... In any way now I change any GUI style, Color Scheme
in login manager using the administrator-mode button, and see no change
how login is seen! - All is blue with the two fields for login... What is wrong?!

Loading Modules at Boot
by Rick Bilonick
I need to load cx88-dvb at boot time. I'm using fc4 (64-bit) on an Athon
64 system. Right now I'm doing:
> /sbin/modprobe -rv cx88-dvb
> /sbin/modprobe -v cx88-dvb
I looked at /etc/rc.d/init.d but I'm confused as to where to add these
commands. I need this to create /dev/dvb devices.

Re: knode
by Andrea Bencini
Paul I don't understand your question.
I login and automatically knode comes executed; on my desktop knode shows
its window. I would disable permanently its execution (I don't want
uninstall it).
