Apache Httpd on FC4 screwed up? FrontPage will not work w/o changes.
by Dan Thurman
I finally did get my FrontPage extensions installed
but not without being forced to change the apachectl
file (to a previous version). The apachectl file from the
CD *might* work but I haven't tested that one... I am
using one from FC2!!!
Using the apachectl from FC2 works for start, stop,
restart, and it reports the flags such as -v from which
FrontPage depends on, but the problem is that
/etc/initd.d/httpd will not work on (re)boot so perhaps
httpd script also needs to be reworked.
The point is, that the updates after a fresh install FC4
is somehow the culprit IMHO.
For now, I am using the apachectl from FC2 and changed
the /etc/initd.d/httpd script so that it will work for reboots.
Can someone shed some light on this please?
Kind regards,
Dan

Java 1.50 not installed in FC4? Use Sun's version?
by Dan Thurman
Well, I checked. Java 1.50 is not installed on FC4, even with all
the updates. I searched the RPMs and see references to v1.4.2?
Is that it??
Can I install Sun's v1.50 or what is recommended.
I noticed this problem since FireFox did not find *any*
java installed as a module ....
Kind regards,
Dan

force NIC cards to eth1 or eth0
by Phil
I have a box with two nic cards.
Ex:
NIC card 1, eth0, static ip 10.10.0.1
NIC card 2, eth1, static ip 192.168.0.1
Now it has been this way for a while...
I have rebooted recently and now
and the NIC/eth assignements are flipped...
Is there a way to force NIC1 to remain as eth0 and NIC2 as eth1?
Thanks.

Try deleting your primary partition 4 (/dev/hda4) with something like
fdisk and just leave the free space.
Sometimes Windows barfs on NTFS-type partitions created by something
non-Windows. It could be expecting it to be formatted already and it may
not be (qtparted doesn't format it, IIRC) and the junk at the beginning
makes the installer unhappy and comatose. Having just free space there
might make the installer go into a different "fresh install" mode. Be
prepared to have grub clobbered and read up on how to get it back or how
to boot linux with the NTLoader. There is info on how to do this in
various googlable HOWTOs.
Also waiting a long time might solve your problem. It may just take a
long, long, long time to "check your system".

xset: bad font path element
by kwhiskers
* xset: bad font path element (#63), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax
*What is this error that is constantly in my xsession-errors file?
I have the same permissions on all my font directories, ie, unchanged from
how they were when I installed the system.
I have the same permissions on all my fonts, ie, unchanged from default,
which I think was 644 (I am not home to check right now)
I have xorg.conf set up with the font server left ecactly like it was
originallly, I think unix:/7100
I have a fonts.dir in every directory, except for the one containing the
postscript .gz fonts, because mkfontdir won't handle these (but when I
removed them form my paths in /etc/X11/fs/config, the error was still there)
There is a whole lot of discussion about this error on google. Thousands of
questions but not one answer.
What is it?*

SMTP Connection Refused
by Ki Song
I am running Fedora Core 4 using Postfix as my mail server.
When I send/receive e-mail messages from an outside client (yahoomail,
gmail, hotmail, etc.), the messages are delivered properly.
However, when I send a message to a different e-mail server in house
(store.knifecenter.com), it says the connection is refused. Here is the
exact message that is returned in the postfix maillog:
connect to store.knifecenter.com[70.88.225.6]: Connection refused (port 25)
D7C9C3572A1: to=<listserv(a)store.knifecenter.com>, relay=none, delay=0,
status=deferred (connect to store.knifecenter.com[70.88.225.6]: Connection
refused)
disconnect from unknown[10.1.10.19]
What is going on? Any ideas?
