big Problem with FC 4 and SATA (hdparm error)
by Sebastian Kösters
Hi,
i use a SATA Harddisk (Seagate 120GB) with Fedora Core 4.
Everything in the System is up to date (yum).
When i do this: hdparm -tT /dev/sda
I get the following error:
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 1944 MB in 2.00 seconds = 971.94 MB/sec
HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(null) (wait for flush complete) failed: Inappropriate ioctl
for device
Timing buffered disk reads: 170 MB in 3.01 seconds = 56.51 MB/sec
HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(null) (wait for flush complete) failed: Inappropriate ioctl
for device
Its not very fast and the error message is not so good i think.
What can i do to solve the Problem?
I also tried FC 4 on different Mainboards with different SATA Harddisk. Same
error every time.
On FC3 with SATA there are no Problems! Downgrading is not possible.
I hope someone can help me?!
Thank you very much!
regards
Sebastian

Problems with automounting removable media
by Rasmus Back
Hi.
In FC3 plugging in a USB thumbdrive worked automagically, the voulme
would just show up on my desktop. I did a clean install of FC4 and now
the same thumbdrive doesn't show up at all. I started hald in verbose
mode, see attached log file for details. Apparently the thumbdrive is
recognized and attached to /dev/sdc, but the final step of mounting it
is not performed. I have checked the option in gnome-volume-manager to
automatically mount removable media.
Are my problems related to the "no runnable
/etc/hotplug/*_device.agent is installed" messages? Hotplug owns
/etc/hotplug and I can't think of any rpms that could be missing.
Googling around there seems to be lots of people with related
problems, but those problems are usually caused by the kernel not
recognizing the drive at all. I can manually mount the thumbdrive, but
then the contents are owned by root and it's a hassle to copy stuff
over. I have a LaCie d2 that has the same problems (regardless of if I
use USB of firewire).
Thanks,
Rasmus

How does one get anaconda to see a usb drive so that one can install FC4
on a usb drive? When booting from the install cd, it does load the usb
driver but the usb disk doesn't appear in the available drives during
partioning.
Thanks,

up2date problem after upgrading from fc2 to fc4
by Perazim
Upgraded from fc2 to fc4 ok. Later, when running up2date, it generates
"unresolved chain of dependancies" when applying fc4 updates. They are:
xxx requires libstd++.so5
xxx requires libstd++.so5(CXXABI_1.2)
xxx requires libstd++.so5(GLIBLPD_3.2)
where xxx is Bestcrypt, Maelstrom, Moni, abiword, apt, chromium, gpdf,
grip,tora,tunracer
This error is generated whenever any of the c packages are attempted to
be updated .... cpp 4.0.0-8 to cpp 4.01-4.fc4
How do I resolve this?
Thanks,
L. Baker

Spurious keyboard repeats with Kernel 2.6.13-1532 and 2.6.14-1633
by Gavin Graham
OK. Here we go again....
Is anyone still having problems here with this happening with any kernel
newer than 2.6.13-1526?
There are two bugzilla jobs for this #171554 & 55223 and people are
still having problems even with the 2.6.14 kernel in testing.

Since applying the last updates to FC4 from fedora site, it seems that

Fedora 4 upgrade
by Aivar Kant
hello everyone!
I just joined the group and am a bit new to Linux enviroment and stuff. I
have installed a Fedora 3 on my PC but since there is a newer version out
there I was wondering if it is worth the trouble. Also if you have
recommendations for places to download it from.
Thanks,
