openoffice.org-2.0 crashes
by Sharon Kimble
I'm finding that the current OpenOffice.org writer and spreadsheet programs
are crashing virtually every time they're being run with this error message
when run from the commandline;-
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
$ openoffice.org-2.0 -writer
/usr/lib/openoffice.org2.0/program/soffice: line 145: 355 Segmentation fault
"$sd_prog/$sd_binary" "$@"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Has anyone got any solutions or workarounds please, because atm its unusable.
Hopefully thanks
Sharon.

pda frustration
by jack wallen
i've been using linux for over 10 years now. one of the single most
frustrating aspects of the OS is how difficult it is to get a PDA to
sync. i'm not sure why but every time i re-install fedora (or red hat
when i was using that distro), the thing that caused me the most grief
was the pda.
and now - after so many years - i'm working with FC4 thinking "surely
they've figured it out by now". well, they haven't. syncing a sony clie
is still a nightmare. i can't get it to work and i'm about to tell
myself my days with a pda are pretty much over.
so does anyone know why such amazing developers within the Linux
community can't seem to make syncing a pda a simple task?
just curious.
and if anyone has had any luck getting an out of box FC4 to sync with a
sony i'd much appreciate any help.

Wireless PC Card
by Kevin Kempter
Hi List;
I'm doing some work in the sticks and they have their M$ network locked down tight. I'm looking at getting a PCMCIA wireless card via cingular for national wireless access. Any thoughts on if this will work with Linux, any thoughts, suggestions, gotcha's etc that anyone is aware of? Anyone else doing this with Fedora?
I currently use the IPW2200 to access wireless hotspots but obviously the IPW2200 project wont drive a PCMCIA card. Anyone know what projects to look at for this. I've heard of ndswrapper but know nothing about it...
Thanks in advance for your help...

Possible SELinux or audit problem

Hi there,
Since applying the last updates to FC4 from fedora site, it seems that
most of the audit messages have disappeared. However, I still get the
following when shutting down my system:

I have hit this error on and off in the past week or so. I
found that by using a different base URL, such as:
baseurl=http://mirrors.ircam.fr/pub/dag/fedora/$releasever/en/$basearch/dag/
The problem cleared up. I tried giving a list of URL's in the
baseurl field but started getting strange results (don't remember exactly what)
so I backed off that idea.
This is how I am set up right now. I left the other mirrors in for reference.
I found the mirrors poking around the internet. I cannot vouch for the
commented out mirrors.

[TIP] core web font installer
by Michael A. Peters
Hi guys -
I wrote a small script for the purpose of fetching and installing the Microsoft Core Web fonts.
There's a sourceforge project for it too, but I think my way is better. It's certainly easier.
It either creates an rpm for you on the fly (if you have a multi-user system and want the fonts available for all users), or you can have it just dump the fonts into your ~/.fonts directory.
It also asks you want fonts you want installed - four of them I don't want because I have substitutes that are better, for example - and I want fontconfig to make those substitutes (which it won't do if the real font is installed)
The script does not need to be run as root.
If you choose the rpm option, the resulting rpm will of course need to be installed as root.
It uses zenity (part of gnome) and it needs cabextract installed (in extras - yum install cabextract)
to grab it and use it -
wget http://homepage.mac.com/mpeters/misc/coreweb_font_installer.sh.gz
gunzip coreweb_font_installer.sh.gz
sh coreweb_font_installer.sh

Filesystems encoding for removable devices
by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
Hi,
How do I setup the filesystem enconding that should be used by udev when
mounting removable devices? I would like to configure my FC4 system to
use ISO-8859-1 when mounting pen drives, card readers or similar
devices, while keeping UTF-8 in fixed disks. That's because I often need
to access at Windows boxes pen drives with files saved in FC boxes and
vice-versa, and accented characters in file names display wrong when the
device is accessed by an operating system which was not the one that
saved the files there.
Thanks,
Marcelo
