ESD crackles and pops
by Rob Brown-Bayliss
Hi, I have a problem with esd, it crackles and pops like a very old and
dusty record, OSS sounds fine, arts sounds fine except that rhytembox
often dies if I use it., and obviously OSS is only good for one app at a
time.
Using fedora core 2 and alsa. Any tips, or is it possible to get
multiple apps to use sound via oss and alsa with out esd?
thanks

reiserfs curruption + Unable to allocate memory
by Ow Mun Heng
Guys,
reiserfs3+fc2+2.6.7
Pressing issue which I'm seeing. Shut-down machine, system detected fs
error.
Proceeded to boot into single mode,
reiserfsck --check /dev/hda8
says.. error.. can be fixed with --fix-fixable
reiserfsck --fix-fixable /dev/hda8
Nothing happens. eg: the same message that comes out when I do --check
come out when i do --fix-fixable
Okay.. Didn't want to --rebuild-tree
Reboot, during load-up, init complains of fs errors and does autofsck.
Complains about the error and then tries to fix... out comes a _lot_ of
"cannot allocate memory" problems.
Problem still can't be fixed.
Boot into Knoppix 3.2 for reiserfsck from tere. Same issue.
deleted /dev/hda8/.autofsck
reboot into fc2
Same problems. Won't let me boot up.
In the end.. Now, I've resorted to using reiserfsck --rebuild-tree
/dev/hda8
Sigh.. I've had this FS curruption more than 5 times since going to FC2
on reiserfs. I was using rh9+ext3 previously.
Is it because I often use hibernate? Nigel (swsusp2) says I should
switch to ext3 if intend to do any hibernation stuffs.
Comments?? Experiences??
PS: Don't have Internet access, so I had to resort to do --rebuild-tree
as I really need to use the laptop.

reading audio cd corrupted with usb sb audigy nx2
by François Patte
Bonjour,
I have some problem with an usb soundblaster card : audigy nx2:
1- if I use the service alsasound ("service alsasound start" or started at boot
time) it is impossible to have a correct sound with dvd (using xine) or cd
(using xmms)
2- with this service stopped : the sound is correct if I read a dvd with xine,
in that case, xine loads itself the alsa modules. Sound if also correct from
internet (mediaplayer...) but, it is impossible to have a correct sound from an
audio cd using xmms, or xine or reading an ogg file from the hard drive.
Does anybody could give me some clue?
Thank you.

LDAP configuration help needed! PLEASE
by James Marcinek
Hello All,
I'm trying to implement Open-LDAP. I've been reading the books/docs and online
docs and I'm now to the point where I'm trying to create my .ldif files using
the /usr/share/openldap/migration tools. I keep getting errors trying to run the
migrate_all_offline.sh script. I'll explain my environment before parsing the
errors:
I've never used NIS in this environment and I want to also implement samba.
Here's some of the slapd.conf file:
# $OpenLDAP: pkg/ldap/servers/slapd/slapd.conf,v 1.8.8.7 2001/09/27 20:00:31
kurt Exp $
#
# See slapd.conf(5) for details on configuration options.
# This file should NOT be world readable.
#
include /etc/openldap/schema/core.schema
include /etc/openldap/schema/cosine.schema
include /etc/openldap/schema/inetorgperson.schema
include /etc/openldap/schema/nis.schema
include /etc/openldap/schema/redhat/autofs.schema
include /etc/openldap/schema/redhat/kerberosobject.schema
include /etc/openldap/schema/samba.schema
I only added the samba.schema to the includes, all else was left alone
My O'Reilly book for LDAP (nor any of the other docs I've come across) doesn't
discuss these entries (can anyone tell me what to use them for):
# Load dynamic backend modules:
# modulepath /usr/sbin/openldap
# moduleload back_ldap.la
# moduleload back_ldbm.la
# moduleload back_passwd.la
# moduleload back_shell.la
I created a slapd.pem certificate but wondered if I should wait until I know
it's running before I turn this on:
#
# The next three lines allow use of TLS for connections using a dummy test
# certificate, but you should generate a proper certificate by changing to
# /usr/share/ssl/certs, running "make slapd.pem", and fixing permissions on
# slapd.pem so that the ldap user or group can read it.
TLSCertificateFile /usr/share/ssl/certs/slapd.pem
TLSCertificateKeyFile /usr/share/ssl/certs/slapd.pem
TLSCACertificateFile /usr/share/ssl/certs/ca-bundle.crt
Now I'm wanting to implement Samba with this and I found a sample slapd.conf
file that indicated setting the following. I'm a bit confused about the
ou=People entry but I'm assuming this will all be setup by the schema. However
my rootdn is different (see below this entry):
access to attrs=lmPassword,ntPassword
by dn="cn=root,ou=People,dc=jemconsult,dc=biz" write
by * none
access to dn="dc=jemconsult,dc=biz"
by self write
by * read
As I'm new I didn't change the database type that was defined in the file (left
as is). Would it be advisable to change the type and if so did they too get
installed with the default open-ldap packages?
database ldbm
suffix "dc=jemconsult,dc=biz"
rootdn "cn=root,dc=jemconsult,dc=biz"
rootpw {SSHA}I'VE_SET_THIS_TOO
The directory permissions have been set for the database to 700:
directory /var/lib/ldap
I left most of my indices but added a few for Samba (from examples):
# Indices to maintain
index objectClass,uid,uidNumber,gidNumber,memberUid pres,eq
index cn,mail,surname,givenname eq,subinitial
index sambaSID eq
index sambaPrimaryGroupSID eq
index sambaDomainName eq
index default sub
All of my replication stuff is commented at as I don't need it yet and don't
want to further complicate the matter.
Now when I run the /usr/share/openldap/migration/migrate_all_offline.sh I get
the following output (I started the debugging mode #!/bin/sh -x):
[root@srv01 migration]# ./migrate_all_offline.sh

proceed. Can anyone give me some pointers?

RE: Disk Array > 2TB
by Omar Castañeda Acosta
Got it working.
Forget about using parted. I just went and make the filesystem straight into the device.
mkfs.xfs -L /home -f /dev/sdb
that did the job
Now df correctly reports 2.6 TB:
/dev/sda3 17580928 698932 16881996 4% /
/dev/sda1 256666 8460 234954 4% /boot

Looks like the problem was with parted.

Subject: Disk Array > 2TB
I've got a system with a 3ware 9000 RAID card with 12 250GB SATA drives.
And another one with two 3ware 9000 RAID cards each with 8 250GB SATA drives.
Both are running kernel 2.6.8-1 (521) 686smp (Systems are dual Xeon 2Ghz HT).
I've got no problem with the 2nd system. Both arrays are 1.75 TB and running fine. However I'd like to join both disks on a single volume.
The 1st system I cannot get the system to recognize the full 2.5 TB.
This is my syslog:

Thanks for the reply, there are no other LC type variables set,
and in emacs: C-h v locale-coding-system gives:
locale-coding-system's value is utf-8
as you might expect from the LANG value.
I'm going to be AFK for a few days unfortunately, so thanks in
advance to anyone who makes a suggestion: I want to get this to
work and I will get round to reading any more replies.

Have you checked the speed rating of your blank CD-R media? Those disks
are only rated for recording up to a certain speed, as I found when I
used 16x disks in a 48x recorder.

Choosing an approach to Fedora upgrades.
by CB
What approaches do people here use for upgrading Fedora installations?
I'm assuming that one wants to upgrade, even if only for curiosity.
The options seem to be (all assuming /home to be a separate filesystem
which will be appropriately mounted after the upgrade):
- choose 'upgrade' option from the latest fedora install ISO set
- choose 'install' and reinstall all the required applications (maybe
scripted?)
- upgrade using yum or apt-get (I don't know how to do this, but it is
apparently possible)
Can anyone suggest how to choose between these? Fedora has a pretty high
rate of version churn and for anyone like me who wants to keep up it's
going to be important to establish a reliable and non-labour-intensive
procedure.
