network woes with laptop and pc card ethernet
by Jeff Vian
I am having problems with networking on my laptop.
FC2 on a Dell Inspiron 5000 with PC card ethernet.
I have 2 different ethernet cards and the symptoms are the same with
both.
3C562B/3C563B dual network/modem card
3C589D 10base2/10baseT card.
On both the choice of network media depends on the dongle attached
(10baseT or 10base2)
I had no problems with the network interface when running redhat 9.
With FC2 it sees the device and loads the 3c589_cs module (I do not
remember which module was used with RH9) and properly configures it. I
am able to start the network. It links to my switch as 10Mbit full
duplex as indicated on the switch leds.
Here is the weird part.
Sometimes (intermittently) I am able to get out to other machines and
other times I cannot. When I do successfully connect it usually after
some period just stops communicating.
I thought possibly it was an issue with speed/duplexing so I tried
mii-tool to see what the parameters of the adapter were, but it tells me
there are no mii interfaces available. In fact the error message with
mii-tool is
"SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth0' failed: Operation not supported
no MII interfaces found"
"route -n" properly shows me the routing, both network and default.
>From the laptop, ping to the adapter address works, ping to the default
gateway does not.
>From the other devices on my network everything works except pings to
the laptop address.
I am certain it is a "failure to communicate" between the pc card and
the switch, but I am at a loss on how to proceed.
My options seem to be:
1. get this (these) adapter(s) to work reliably (preferred) or
2. get a new adapter.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to identify/fix the problem since
mii-tool will not work for me?
TIA

change_console command
by Juan Luis Pastor
Hi,
In order to get rid of the "init: open(/dev/pts/0)" error, running
"change_console -r" command should fix it. I've checked in the man page
that this resets the console file used by init to its compiled-in
default (usually /dev/console). In which file does this change take
place? I want to be able to roll back the change some day.

GRUB installed despite selecting "do not install bootloader"
by Marc Adler
I looked in the FAQ and elsewhere and found nothing on this. (Is this
the first time this has happened?)
I just installed Fedora 2 on my dual-boot WinXP system and selected for
GRUB _not_ to be installed, since I use Partition Commander, but when I
booted Linux (from the Partition Commander start-up screen) I got a GRUB
prompt.
Three questions:
1) How do I get rid of/disable GRUB so that Partition Commander can boot
directly into Fedora and not GRUB?
I have Explore2fs on the WinXP side, so I can access all parts of the
Linux partition on my system. (Boy, that application makes a joke of
security, doesn't it?) I've never actually used Explore2fs to write to
or delete stuff from the Linux partition, because I know how dangerous
that is, but since I'm looking at having to re-install the whole thing
anyway, what the hell.
Under /boot there are two folders, big as life - grub and lost+found.
The grub folder only contains one file - splash.xpm.gz.
2) If I can't get rid of GRUB, how can I modify Partition Commander to
ignore it?
Currently, Partition Commander is booting to:
product: mbr_grub.dat
drive: mbr
primary 102MB
GNU GRUB version 0.94
I'm not sure how I would redirect GRUB, but the other Linux partitions
which are visible are a 10GB logical partition and a smaller logical one
which I assume is the swap partition.
3) If neither of the above is possible, how do I boot to Fedora from
GRUB? I looked at the help function and read the relevant parts of TFM
online, but frankly it's above my head, unfortunately. :(
Thanks in advance,

MathML support in Mozilla/Firefox
by D. D. Brierton
I was testing out Mozilla's support for MathML (with the mathml-fonts
package installed), and equations are not being rendered as they are
supposed to (Greek letters used where Roman ones should be).
Compare the following page in Mozilla (only if you have mathml-fonts
installed):
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/start.xhtml
with their screenshot of how it should be rendered:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/screenshots/start.gif
Can anyone confirm that they get the same results on that page as I do
before I bugzilla this?
Tested in Mozilla 1.7.3 and Firefox 0.9.3 on FC2 with MathML fonts
installed from Fedora Extras:
$ rpm -q mozilla firefox mathml-fonts
mozilla-1.7.3-0.2.0
firefox-0.9.3-0.fdr.4
mathml-fonts-1.0-0.fdr.14
Best, Darren

Strange NFS Problem
by Douglas Furlong
Good morning all.
Considering the exceedingly fast and speedy response I got yesterday
with regards to my problem accessing edirectory.co.uk I thought I would
try my luck with an NFS problem.
All our unix systems at work have their home directory mounted via NFS
to allow hot seating (not that they ever use it!).
I have just recently upgraded to Fedora Core 2, running the most recent
kernel.
All the workstations are running Fedora Core 2, with the second from
last kernel (due to CIFS/SMB problems in the latest one).
Unfortunately there are two users who's connection to the NFS server is
dropped and does not seem to want to reconnect. To date I have.
1) Replaced both of their PC's
2) Replaced switch
3) will replace network cables tomorrow
4) I have tried numerous version of the kernel including the testing
kernel from rawhide.
5) Tried variations in the timeo=x value to see if that will help.
These lockups vary in time between 30 minutes and 5 hours. Network
connections are not affected by this lock up, I am able to ssh on to the
box (that's how I collected the tcpdump data).
I also have two windows PC's on this switch and things appear to be
fine.
I have 7 or 8 other systems running linux on the network and NFS
communication is not affected.
I have increased the number of servers on the NFS server from 8 to 16. I
did this by editing /etc/init.d/nfs (don't think this is of any help).
I took some tcpdump info on both the client and the server to try and
see if I can work out what is going on. Initially it is not providing me
with much information (but loads of data).
I have attached two files, one from the client and one from the server.
Main reason for attaching them is due to length of data. I had wanted to
attach them as plain text to simplify access, but at 100k it's a bit too
large.
I didn't want to cut them down too much just in case I removed some
pertinent information :(

Is fedora core 2 x86_64 insecure ?
by Vikas Kedia
After a new install + yum update of FC2 x86_64 "root
kit hunter" complains
* Application version scan
- OpenSSL 0.9.7a
[ Vulnerable ]
- OpenSSH 3.6.1p2
[ Vulnerable ]
Application scan
Vulnerable applications: 2
The latest version of OpenSSL is 0.9.7d
and the latest version of openssh is 3.9
Why does FC2 x86_64 use older versions of openssl and
openssh ?
