Re:: 8139too config problems
by phroxen@caramail.com
lspci gives me the following output:
02:01.0 ethernet Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139/8139 C+ (rev 10)
Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems: Unknown device ff00
Flags: Bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 10
I/O ports at 3000
memory at e0200000 (32 bit , non-preferable) [size=256]
Capabilities: [50] Powermanagement version 2
ok then i type system-config-network
and go to the hardware tab,i select my network card, RTL-8139/8139C.... i click on edit i see MEM, IO, IO1, IO2, DMA0, DMA1. i dont know what dma1 or 0 is but it put 3000 in the IO and e0200000 in th IO field right?, i leave the rest of the fields empty mostly cuz i dont know wat to put in them then when i close it i asks me if i want ti save then the error message:
The Ethernet card could not be initialized. PLease Vreify your settings and try again.
Command failed: /sbin/midprobe/ 8139too irq=10 io =e0200000 mem=3000
output:
Fatal: Error inserting 8139too (/lib/modules/2.6.5-&.358/kernel/drivers/net/8139too.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
dmesg says 8139too: Unknown parameter '" irq' 10 times...

Samba access-restrictions
by Roger Grosswiler
Hi,
i have a samba-server running with several users and each of them has its own directory on the server. also, i did
some public-accessible directories. All user-directories work fine, but not the public-accessibles, which restricts
write-access.
what i've done.
- generating the users in /etc/passwd and merging them in group samba
- adding those users in /etc/samba/smbpasswd
- adding the sections in /etc/samba/smb.conf:
[homes]
comment = Home Directories
path = /users/%U
guest ok = no
browseable = yes
writable = yes
create mask = 775
[public]
path = /public
public = yes
writable = yes
create mask = 775
- mounting the shares with a shell-script after a successful samba-login:
sudo mount -t cifs -o credentials=/$HOME/.smb,rw,uid=$UID,gid=samba //server/$USER /home/$USER/winhome
sudo mount -t cifs -o credentials=/$HOME/.smb,rw,uid=$UID,gid=samba //server/public /home/$USER/winpublic
...so why, why, can't i write in my public folders???
ah yes...rights...
2 drwxrwxr-x 8 samba samba 4096 30. Jul 08:36 public
i just thougth, it should be enough, running the appropriate passwd-rights on the shares??
Thanks for your help!

Hi There,
Why are some folks' posts only attachments of notepad text files and
signature.asc files? Just curious.
Thanks,

Squid HTTP Proxy compilation options
by Michael Bhola
It would seem that the Squid HTTP Proxy under FC2 is compiled with the
--disable-ident-lookups option. This would appear to be a change from
FC1 and hence breaks my Squid configuration. Anyone know why this change
was made or how I contact the package maintainer to ask ?

How to make UTF-8 the deault charcater set in Gnome Terminal
by Reinhard Sy
Hi,
I am running FC2 and Gnome Terminal 2.6.0.
The default encoding is: ANSI_X3.4-1968 which I don't like. The german
umlaute are not displayed.
I can select UTF-8 but I would like to make this the default. Where I
can set the default character encoding for Gnome Terminal ?
Thanks for any hint.

can't change screen resolution
by Pietro R.A. Binetti
Firstly I apologize for the wrong indication: I am stuck on 640x480
resolution (not 800x600) and I want to have 800x600 (not 1024x768). However
the problem doesn't change so much: I am still stuck.
Some of you suggested me to look at the video memory in my BIOS settings.
Now there are 2 problems:
1. accessing my BIOS settings at the startup I can't see anywhere issues
relating on video memory
2. I checked my system hardware and I discovered that my video card shares
the memory with the RAM: it takes 8MB of 128MB. It does mean something,
doesn't it?
I also checked on the Acer webpage: there are no updates available for my
BIOS.
Regards,
Pietro

Check to see if there is a later BIOS version for your machine. I had a
problem being stuck at 640 x 480 because of a buggy BIOS version.
Also, check your BIOS setting for things that relate to video memory. If
I recall, some systems are set to pretty low settings for shared memory.
This will limit your resolution top setting. I believe that 1 meg would
limit you to 640 x 480.

Check the archives for this information. You have to add
psmouse=proto.imps or similar to your grub.conf file. This changes the
order of events the kernel uses. (Info from an earlier post by another
lister)
I'm on a a machine that does not need this added to the kernel. My
memory recall might not be the correct context. Look for 2.6 kernel and
synaptics related posts in the list archives.
I couldn't find the postings myself. Your search might be more successful.
The link to the archives is at the bottom of every posting. Click on the
link below or at the bottom of the message to search the archives.

This might lead you in the right direction to a resolution. (hopefully!)
