installation problem
by Nina Pham
I downloaded and copied FC2 cds. I successfully install them on my first
system. Today, when I tried to install to another 400Mhz system, I had
problem. After reboot from cdrom drive, it chose English language, us
keyboard, local cdrom then it popup the dialog saying that Fedora Core
cd can not be found. Anybody had encountered the problem?.

Checking FC2 Iptables firewall config for PPPoE-enabled Gateway
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
Recently, I completed setting up an FC2-enabled server as a home gateway.
Its connection to the Internet is by way of Verizon's PPPoE DSL. The
external Westell modem connects to eth0; the home LAN connects to eth1.
Everything seems to be communicating correctly. The concern I have and
the request I make of the list is to review the iptables setting for the
gateway.
Stock FC2 Iptables looks like this:

I run a standalone server on an ISP loaded w/ FC2 and running the stock Iptables
configuration. There doesn't seem to be any security problems.
The biggest hurdle was getting machines on the home network making
requests through the gateway; initially, no web, ssh, or ftp
requests were possible using domain names. They could only
be made using explicit ip addresses.
Once I added
>>>-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -i eth1 -j ACCEPT<<<
service requests to the internet using domain names began to work
correctly.
My concern is how exposed/vulnerable is the above gateway configuration?
Much thanks for your help!

What you pasted looks ok so far and does not explain a problem as normal
user "aabento".
What did you do before the not set PS1 did first time occur? I don't
know what you broke. If you run "source /home/aabento/.bashrc" while
being logged in as aabento, does that change the prompt back to default?

GKrellm-weather not working with FC2 -
by bobgoodwin
After changing from RH9 to Fedora Core 2 I have not been able to get
the gkrellm-weather to show data. GrabWeather appears to be working
but if it collects any data it's not showing up. All I get is the
default 99°F etc.
I cleared out all the gkrellm application files I could find and
reinstalled
from yum but the result is the same, the monitor is displayed below the
clock but never changes from 99° 99%.
Has anyone else had this problem and solved it?
Thanks.

Atapi CD-RW problem (ide-scsi)
by Kristian André Gallis
Hello!
I run Fedora 2 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo A7620 laptop, and have
suddenly got myself into trouble that I cannot find a solution to on the
web.
I was going to burn my first CD with cdrecord on Fedora 2. But that
didn't work. I had a problem when I used Fedora 1 aswell, but then I
just followed a how-to in the Red Hat Linux Fedora bible to configure
the IDE CD-ROM for recording.
Then I got into trouble, because this how-to is for kernel 2.4 and I
have 2.6.8. I didn't think of this and just tried to follow it step by
step. The result was that cdrecord does still not work, and now _I'm not
able to read CDs anymore!_
The things I have done (run) is:
[root@localhost /]# modprobe -a ide-scsi
[root@localhost dev]# rm cdrom
[root@localhost dev]# ln -s scd0 cdrom
How can I revert to the original configuration? So I at least am able to
read CDs?

Yay! Here it is:
http://www.peepingdarklord.com/fedoralist/
I've added the CD burning problem thanks to a gentle reminder from Clint
Harshaw. My apologies for not noticing something so darn obvious.
Please note I'm *not* a web designer and favor simplicity and large
text. Any comments, anything that looks real crappy/doesn't make
sense/broken links, please give a holler to melgil88(a)optonline.net.

RE:Shell prompt
by Arnaldo Bento
What happens if you do
"exec bash"
--->Nothing
You deleted your ~/.bashrc. Recreate it as root:
cp /etc/skel/.bashrc ~/.bashrc
chown $USER:$USER ~/.bashrc
(where $USER is the user for which you have to repair the .bashrc)
--->It works as a root but not as a user.
Copying the .bashrc from skeleton into the user's home directory did not fix
it?
--->No
--->I copy it to a user directory /home/aabento
Thanks

samba share/printer problem
by Lorn Miller
Hi all,
My problem is this: I am trying to share a printer with a windows xp
box using samba. The xp machine is only able to see my printer (or my
samba share) if I drop my firewall. Since I am running an http server,
I don't want to drop my firewall.
Even with the firewall down, however, all the xp box can do is see
the printer. Windows XP is unable to access the printer, the error is
"Access Denied, unable to connect."
I have a share set up as read only, and that appears to work. I have
a share set up as read/write, but when I try to write from the xp box, I
get another access denied.
Summary:
