eth0 problem
by Buddy Hummler
Hello, I'm in need of some assistance.
I have a Dell Inspiron 3800 that I just installed Fedora Core 2 on
(downloaded from Fedora's website). I'm trying to get online, but have been
unsuccessful. When the computer is starting up it says "xirc2ps_cs device
eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization. [failed]" My
network is configured correctly, but I'm not getting any sign that my
network card is working. I had Fedora Core 1 installed before and it said
the same thing about the device not being present and that it failed, but I
was still able to get online - however, I ran into much difficulty when
trying to download updates from RHN.
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem? Or can someone point me in
the right direction?
Thanks

Thanks to you both. Unfortunately
(1) Changing the margins using system-config-printer->queue->Queue Options
doesn't change the ppd file /etc/cups/ppd/lp0.ppd (which I believe is
cups control file for this printer). The margins were set to 36 point
when I started looking at them: I changed them to up to 144 points (which
seems to be the max allowed) without any effect on printing or on lp0.ppd.
Then I set them back to 36 pts.
(2) Editing the ppd file /etc/cups/ppd/lp0.ppd doesn't change printer
behavion. I rebooted the system just for good measure. Here is the
relevant change:
$ diff -c /etc/cups/ppd/Samsung-ML-4500-gdi.ppd /etc/cups/ppd/lp0.ppd

Is /etc/cups/ppd/lp0.ppd the right file to look at? Any other suggestions?

Re: Re: can't change screen resolution
by Pietro R.A. Binetti
yes, I also tried to make some changes in xorg.conf file, but
unsuccessfully. under section "screen" i had "800x600" "640x480".
i deleted "640x480", but nothing! now if i look in the Display settings
i can read 800x600, but i actually see my screen with 640x480.
Beside this, in this laptop (acer tm212t) I also have win xp, in which i
perfectly see @ 800x600.
i really don't know how to solve this problem!

I was trying to install a library and failed because of these:

../include/xincs.h:169:23: X11/Xatom.h: No such file or directory

What packages provide the above headers.
Thanks

Kernel update oddity.
by Sam Varshavchik
This is strange. On my left side is my dual-CPU workstation, which boots an
smp kernel. On my right side is a garden-variety laptop.
When I update the kernel on the server, the new menu.lst sets the new kernel
as a boot default. When I update the kernel on the laptop, the new menu.lst
keeps the old kernel as a boot default. What's up with that?

install latest beta version of "twiki" under FC2?
by Robert P. J. Day
is there anything untoward about installing the most recent beta
release of "twiki" under FC2? the docs at twiki.org are a bit
ambiguous -- the most recent FC-ready RPM is dated back at feb 2003,
and the docs warn about bad things happening if you try to use apache
2.0 (which i have to assume is seriously out of date, if you're using
the fairly recent beta release).
anyone go thru this? any problems? thanks.
rday
p.s. the most recent zip-format beta release is 20040703beta.zip, if
that's at all helpful.

What you pasted looks ok so far and does not explain a problem as normal
user "aabento".
What did you do before the not set PS1 did first time occur? I don't
know what you broke. If you run "source /home/aabento/.bashrc" while
being logged in as aabento, does that change the prompt back to default?

Java plugin/runtime
by Morne Coetzee
Good afternoon,
I am relatively new to Feodora and to Linux so please bear with me.
I need to install Java Runtime in order to view Java based pages and
other odds and ends. Q: What do I need? Where do I get it? and how do I
install it? I'm using Mozilla.
Any help will be appreciated and please feel free to mail me directly.
