Tripwire Policy File Question
by Norman Nunn
In running tripwire for several days I get daily reports that identify
allot of missing files, most in /var/lock/subsys. These files are not
on my system and the comment comes from the tripwire checks defined in
the policy file. I was wondering if it was customary to comment these
out in the policy file so the reports are much shorter. Or is there a
good reason to leave them there as is.

possible SMTP attack
by olga@urbantimes.net
Hi,
I got this message in the logwatch sent to root:
Client quit before communicating:
222.183.141.253 : 1 Time(s)
**Unmatched Entries**
[222.183.141.253]: possible SMTP attack: command=AUTH, count=6: 1 Time(s)
What does it mean? How can I protect my server against SMTP attacks?
Thank you.

FC2 printing problem
by Dave Stevens
Hello all,
I have a nice old Canon BJ-200 ink jet printer attached to the parallel port
of my computer. The unit has FC1 upgraded to FC2 and is reasonably smooth
running. But I can't print. The cable and printer are known good, I can boot
of a DOS floppy and print text that way.
I've used the printer configuration tool to add the printer, the driver is the
one recommended and I can not print. The option is there, the printer
indicated on the print menu is correct, but when I push "print" nothing
happens, the data just goes away.
I am not able to print a test page in the printer configuration dialogue, the
printer is highlighted but the "test" menu is grayed out and not available.
I am logged in as a regular user, not root.
Ideas?
Dave

FC2 - No sound on second Dell machine
by James Pifer
I previously posted about getting no sound on a Dell Optiplex GX150. I
was not able to get it working on that machine.
So now I'm trying another Dell machine. This times it's a Precision 450.
Unfortunately it's trying to use the same audio drivers and I'm getting
the same results. In /var/log/messages I get:
Jul 30 13:08:02 sylvester modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command
for sound_slot_1
An lspci shows me this:
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB (ICH4) AC'97
Audio Controller (rev 01)
modprobe.conf has:
alias eth0 8139too
alias eth1 e1000
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-intel8x0 &&
/usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
remove snd-intel8x0 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; };
/sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0
alias usb-controller ehci-hcd
alias usb-controller1 uhci-hcd
alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394
Alsa versions are:
alsa-lib 1.0.3a-2
alsa-lib-devel 1.0.3a-2
alsa-utils 1.0.3-1
I can get on alsa's list for help, but wondering if anyone has tried FC2
on a Dell Presicion 450?
Thanks,
James

FC2 via upgrade, games missing
by Gene Heskett
Like sol (aka AisleRiot)
Its still in the menu, but won't run. It runs just fine on the full
FC2 install out in the woodshop.
What rpm, and which disk is it on, in the FC2 distro?

fedora DHCP/DHCPrelay live IP Address
by Ow Mun Heng
Hi,
I'm using a FC2(laptop) with 2 NIC, and only 1 ethernet jack to the
LAN.
My dekstop is conneted to the laptop and NAT'ed to get LAN connectivity.
NAT Live IP
Desktop --> eth0 --> Laptop --> Eth1 --> LAN
I'm wondering if it's possible for the Desktop to get a Live IP via the
laptop instead of using NAT.
The LAN is using a DHCP server. Can Dhcrelay be used in this situation?

printer problems
by Richard Schmitt
Switching to Fedora Core 2 seemed reasonably smooth. But now I am unable
to connect to an HP LaserjetIIIP via the smb network. The printer runs
on another Windows machine in the network. The network works. In fact,
if I try to print on the Laserjet, the machine receives the message and
runs two pieces of paper through but there is no printing on it.
The Laserjet seems to be connected and communicating with the Fedora
machine, but the files to be printed somehow do not make it to the
printer,
Anyone have similar problems or, even better, a solution?
Thanks Richard Schmitt

Graphical CD recording tools
by A. Lanza
Hi,
i want to record my audio and data CDs with Linux as i did one time with
Windows, but haven't found any software in FC2 to do it. I guess
there'll be some out there... I'd prefer one with a GUI.
Any help?
TIA

Fedora and Redhat
by l00pyl
I was just wondering what the actual connection between Fedora and Redhat is.
Will they always be tied?
[jeem@localhost jeem]$ locate redhat | wc -l
6011
[jeem@localhost jeem]$ locate fedora | wc -l
528
Seems a little uneven. Can't we just get rid of references to Redhat.
This email is partly in jest but I consider myself a Fedora not Redhat guy.
