gnome-volume-manager startup failed (FC3)
by Mitsuho Iizuka
Hi
gnome-volume-manager startup failed and put an error as follows,
libhal.c 767 : org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceDoesNotExist raised
"Service "org.freedesktop.Hal" does not exist"
** (gnome-volume-manager:3854): WARNING **: manager.c/930: seems that
HAL is not running
I tried several ways to fix this problem, such as,
gnome-session
/etc/rc.d/init.d/haldaemon start -> no effect, no daemon
/usr/bin/hal -> no effect, no daemon
however I could not fix it. Anyone know how to fix(startup
gnome-volume-manager) ?

VMWare v4.5 & FC3
by Lotsa Cabo
Okay, what gives? I just installed FC3 into VMWare v4.5 on an XP host.
Man, is it SLOOOOOOOOOW! It took almost 45 minutes just to boot. My
configuration is as follows:
PIII 1.2 GHz
WinXP Pro SP2
512MB with 256MB dedicated to the virtual machine
VM hard drive image is 5GB (all allocated)
VM hard drive image is on a partition by itself
Can someone please explain to me why this is happening and how to get it up
to a livable speed.
Thanx,
Ryan

SSHD problems
by John Aldrich
Just to restate the problem -- when I start my linux box I do NOT manually
attempt to start sshd. If I attempt to ssh into my linux box, I get a timeout
error. If I check the \var\log\secure, I get the error about "address is
already in use." I never see an error on-screen.
That being said, this is pretty much a plain-vanilla FC3 install and I know
there are some updates to be had (I started downloading 'em this morning) so
maybe one of those will fix the problem.
I have one other problem, which I'll bring up in a separate email. thanks.

RE: Problem with new FC3 install
by Bisbal, Prentice
Does this problem only occur with Linux? Do you have any other OSes
connected to the KVM?

Subject: Problem with new FC3 install
I have a new, plain-vanilla FC3 install on linux box which was previously
running RH9. I wiped the system, with the exception of 3 directories and
reinstalled FC3 on there.
I am on a Belkin Omniview SE 4-port KVM switch and every time I change to
another PC, my mouse goes crazy and I have to reboot to get it back
(although I
suspect I could just telinit 3, followed by telinit 5 to get it back.)
This is a generic scroll mouse on the PS2 port. It's the same mouse I was
using
on RH9 with no problems. I recall having this problem previously a LONG time
ago, but I don't recall what fixed it... As I said, it was working fine
under
RH9, but now when I switch between PCs, it goes crazy. I did go into the
system-config-mouse and set it up as a generic PS2 scroll mouse. It was
auto-detected as a generic 3-button PS2 mouse.
Any help here?
Thanks

Question on /media mount points
by Alan
Since the introduction of sysfs and udev and whateverdev the system now
creates a bunch of mount points automagically.
I have a friend who wants to rename these but they vanish after reboot.
The devices are pointing to actual ide devices in fstab, but instead of:
/media/cdrecorder he wants /media/dvd-burner
/media/cdrecorder1 he wants /media/cd-burner
/media/cdrom he wants /media/dvd-rom
I am not finding the config information for this anywhere.
Any ideas how these mount points are determined and/or created?

Not *exactly* the same.
Does Fedora include an OS?
Yes, plus a whole lot more.
Does Windows include a virus?
Yes, a whole lot of them.

GNOME apps display problems

Hi, I have a older monitor that does only 800x600. Some gnome apps
have a bigger size than my screen can show.
What can I do to make this apps "fit" my desktop?
