How to compile kernel source for FC3
by Tony Denault
I needed to recompile the kernel for an inhouse development project.
Following the threads _almost_ told me what to do. I'll posted
how I got the kernel source install, compile and running
reference. Or please correct any error....thanks,
Download,install & compile kernel source.
Example using kernel version 2.6.9-1.681_FC3 for Fedora Core3.
Following the direction in the release notes for getting source tree:
# rpm -ivh kernel-2.6.9-1.681_FC3.src.rpm
# cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS
# rpmbuild -bp --target=i686 kernel-2.6.spec <-- slightly difference from the release notes
# cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD
Kernel soures is located in /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.9/linux-2.6.9/
Copy the tree to /usr/src/linux-2.6.x
# cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.9
# tar cf - linux-2.6.9 | ( cd /usr/src; tar xf - )
Then proceed as usual.
# cd /usr/src
# ln -s linux-2.6.9 linux-2.6
# cd /usr/src/linux-2.6
# make clean
# make mrproper
# make oldconfig -> generate a .config file based on the running kernel
# make bzImage
# make modules
# make modules_install
# make install
For some unknown reason it calls the kernel '2.6.9-prep'
The kernel name can be modified by editing /usr/src/linux-2.6/Makefile
I did peek-and-poke around and this was the 2.6.9-1.681_FC3. I think
the Makefile should call it 2.6.9-1.681_FC3-custom rather that -prep
Not sure you need to copy the source to /usr/src, but I'm used to this;
plus I'm not sure what happens to /usr/src/redhat when a new kernel
updates arrives.

Newbie Alert :) Network Problems
by davide Richmond
Heya all,
I'm burnt on certifying on WinDoze...so figure it's time to dabble in Linux.
So I've installed Fedora 3 on a Thinkpad A21M. It looks like everything
worked fine...so I just plugged in my LAN line and went..hmm...no access
when I launch Firefox. So, I went into Network Configuration and created a
new device using the eth0 that was listed under Hardware (3Com Corp 3c556B
CardBus [Tornada]). Unfortunately, when I hit Activate I get the error
Cannot activate network device eth0! (3c59x device eth0 does not seem to be
present, delaying initialization.)
Any help would be appreciated :)

Rescue HD setup procedure
by Mitsuho Iizuka
Hi
Is it valid way to have 'RESCUE HD' in /dev/hda2 as follows ?
I have FC3 in /dev/hdb1, and XP in /dev/hda1. Just grub booting
from vmlinuz and initrd.img in rescuecd.iso, can rescue linux
get to rescuecd.img ? May I confirm this before FC3 crush ?
mkdir /mnt/src
mkdir /mnt/res
mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/src
cp /foo/bar/isolinux/FC3-i386-rescuecd.iso /mnt/src
mount -o loop /mnt/src/FC3-i386-rescuecd.iso /mnt/res
mkdir /mnt/res/boot
mkdir /boot/installer
cp /mnt/res/isolinux/vmlinuz /boot/installer/vmlinuz-resc
cp /mnt/res/isolinux/initrd.img /boot/installer/initrd-resc.img
:
editting grub menu.lst
and reboot....

I don't see any numbers. There's also nothing specifically
indicating that building for Athlon is why he saw a performance
win. If something else also got disabled (even inadvertantly),
that could also factor into it.

Booting directly into X problems
by Sasa Stupar
Hi!
My system: I have two HDD on which are installed separetly winxp and FC2
with their own MBR's. MotherBoard is ASUS P4BGV-MX-EAYZ with built in
VGA i845.
I have installed FC2 and have problems to boot directly into X. I get
blank screen. However, if I first boot into winxp and then reboot into
linux X works.
This problem is only happening if machine was switched off for a couple
of minutes and more.
Another thing: if I boot to FC2 and choose "Interactive mode" then I can
also boot into X without any problems.
Is there anything to do (beside getting a new VGA card) to fix this
because I am about to remove winxp and I do not want to boot with
Interactive mode every day?

Sasa

Well AFAIK (and I do not use that program) you can not open it with
another program but rather have to install it:
$ install-crossover-standard-4.0.sh
see http://www.codeweavers.com/site/support/docs/crossover-
standard/install
or if you are not even getting it downloaded, try saving it when you
download and not opening it directly from the site. Then install.

RE: FC3: Gnome Network Device Manager does not manage wireless

Frank: I see similar behavior when I use network profiles, but my issue is
that DHCP vs. static IP address information is not preserved across
profiles. So if I need a static IP on one network, and then use DHCP on
another, my static IP goes away. To restore, I have to set up the
connection again.
I think there's an issue here but I have not been able to definitely nail it
down. Maybe others have had similar experiences?

Adding printers to CUPS configuration
by Andrew Robinson
I've got a Samsung ML-1710 printer that I've run under Fedora Core 1 and
want to run under Fedora Core 3. The Samsung software is supposed to
work with CUPS, but after installing it, the cups init script fails
because printconf-backend fails. printconf-backend fails because
/usr/sbin/alternatives --display print returns something that
printconf-backend doesn't expect. This much has been noted has been
noted in bugzilla, at which point Tim Waugh, apparently the Red Hat CUPS
guy, threw up his hands.
It appears that the above chain of errors happens because Samsung adds a
version of lpr in /usr/local/linuxprinting/bin and puts a link to this
version in the normal place. OK. Rather than use the Samsung installer,
I wonder if I can install the Samsung drivers into the existing CUPS
installation.
Can someone tell me how to add the Samsung printer drivers to the CUPS
configuation? I have the .ppd files and filters from the Samsung
installation. From the very little I've been able to figure out in the
last two nights, it appears I need to get knowledge of the ppd files
into the /etc/ppds.dat file. I haven't found an explanation on how. Is
there a how-to that I haven't turned up with Google?
Thanks!

Evolution 2.0 "Just Doesn't Work"; will not send
by Erik Hemdal
Situation: Fresh install of FC3, plus all updates on Dell Latitude D600
(Pentium 4, Intel 855 chipset)
Problem: Evolution refuses to send email; receives messages just fine.
Debugging steps:
Confirmed "server setup" with ISP.
No errors in any logs at all.
Confirmed that this setup works on an FC1 machine (works OK).
Verified that this hardware sends correctly (same laptop booted into
Windows XP -- no problem)
Attempted to adjust all possible authentication methods in Evolution (no
success).
Disabled iptables and SELinux controls - no joy.
Finally installed Thunderbird Mail: works perfectly.
I installed from healthy CD's and had no errors during installation.
Evolution 1.4 is just fine as well. I didn't find anything in the FC3
release notes, but I might have missed something.
I admit it got pretty late last night, so I probably missed something.
Anyone seen an issue like this? I've never seen a client simply refuse
to work without any errors/log messages/etc.
