Gnome Settings Daemon failure, revisited
by michal@cvu.wustl.edu
Hello
I already reported this problem earlier
(http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2004-November/msg04365.html).
The affected platform is Fedora Core 3 i686 2.6.9-1.681_FC3
and Gnome 2.8.0.
Since then I backed up my personal files, deleted my account and created
my account, again. I have restored some files and everything worked OK for
10 days. Today, after rebooting FC3 and login to my account I got the
familiar window with message
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work
correctly.
The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.
The last error message was:
Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.
I googled but the found prescriptions suggesting removing ~.gn* and ~.gc*
directories did not do any good.
One hint which may help to resolve this problem is in the file
xses-michal.S1GOvo found in /tmp directory. Here is its content.

web traffic analizer
by Mike Rambour
I am looking for something that can run on my web server and give me
information on my web traffic in real time, preferably a GUI but could be
textual. I like xosview for giving me info on the status of my computer
and been playing with gkrellm but I want to know how many FTP users and
HTTP users I have at any one time. I would LOVE to have it go down to what
web pages are open but that might be too much of a performance hit. This
is a small web site that gets about 200 hits a day sitting on 2.8ghz pc and
a gig of ram with Fedora Core 2 so I assume it could handle a graphic
application giving me that info.
I have found a few "for purchase" ones but its just a car club web
site. Right now I am occasionally viewing the access logs to see what is
going on during the day. The site is brand new been up 1 day and I am a
total newbie. The site had been hosted at a ISP for the last few years and
its now at my home. I installed Fedora 2, and turned off everything I
could think of since I am not a security person. I will need to allow FTP
soon and the only thing I allowed in iptables for now is SSH and HTTP
everything else is off and I even turned off sendmail in the services so
its not even running, I think I am good to go but I just want to check it out.

rdesktop tunneling with ssh
by Richard Bankhead
Hi all,
In FC2 I had it setup that I could ssh to my office site (FC2 machine at
home on DSL to Redhat 9 mail server at work) then run rdesktop to access
a Windoze server(not directly accessible to the outside).
Since I moved to FC3 I get the error "unable to open display" when I
attempt to run rdesktop through my ssh tunnel. I tried using rdesktop
versions 1.2.0 and 1.3.1 but get the same error.
Any help appreciated!
Thanks

RE: Newbie Alert :) Network Problems
by davide Richmond
Ah, much appreciated..that will be useful later when I get can the dang
thing online :)
But...So, I rebooted the the computer (how to I stop and start network
otherwise?) and as FC3 was loading I saw the message "Bringing up interface
eth0: 3c59x does not seem to be present". I did the lspci -v again and it
seems to see it just fine. If I go into Network Device Control and click
Activate..it gives the same message (3c59x does not seem present). If I
delete it, will it automatically reinstall itself after the next reboot, or
will I have to re-add it? Based on the info lspci gave me earlier, how do I
manually re-add the NIC?
Thanks,
Davide

Mail toaster
by WipeOut
I see that FC3 now comes with Cyrus-IMAP as the standard POP3/IMAP
server.. This seems to me like a great idea to make a mail toaster out
of an FC3 box..
My plan is to try and use Postfix+Cyrus-IMAP but then I thought why not
try and include Anti-virus (Clam-AV) and Anti-spam (Spamassassin)..
Anyone done this?? or have any pointers or suggestions for making this
build as easy as possible?
Thanks..

anaconda cd test keeps failing
by Lo Cal
I downloaded the Fedora core 3 torrent file, check the md5sum, which
passed, and burned the images at 10x using nero 6.3 Ultra Edition and
12x RW disks, boot with cd 1 and start the anaconda cd test which
keeps failing. Only cd 2 passed. I then search torrent sites for each
disk iso and downloaded the torrent file for each cd. Do md5sum
comparison, which passed and burned the cds with Nero 6.3UE at 4x
using 4x RW disks. Boot cd 1, start anaconda test which failed for cd
1, 3, and 4. I used bittornado v0.3.8 for the downloads. Now the
only thing left to try is downloading from http. I am curring running
Fedora core2 and I want to do a clean install of Fedora core3.
It looks like some one is having the same problem as me on this thread.
http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-26120.html
Anyone know how to fix the problem
PS I just got on the list. I apologize if this topic was discussed before.

RE: Newbie Alert :) Network Problems
by davide Richmond
Ah, that worked perfectly. Thanks Alexander. Love this learning stuff :)
So, for the NIC I got: (ugh..have to type this out as I can't get info off
the FC3)
00:03.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corp 3c556B CardBus [Tornado] (rev 20)
Subsystem: 3Com Corp: Unknown Device 6356
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 11
I/O Ports at 1800 [size=256]
[virtual] Memory at f4101400 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128]
(above repeated)
Capabilities: <available only to root>
So, it looks like it's fine and working to my untrained eye. Am I missing
something?
