rh8 + ximian download of Evolution -> Fedora
by psw-fedora-www@wisnovsky.net
I've looked at the release notes regarding uninstallation of Ximian software and I still don't get it.
I have a creaky rh8 + ximian Evolution (not desktop) setup.
When I load the fedora disk one and execute the autorun and ask to install everything plus gnome, I get the following conflict:
* depcheck: package at-spi needs ORBit2 >= 2.6.0 (not provided)
* depcheck: package at-spi needs gail >= 1.4.0 (not provided)
* depcheck: package at-spi needs gtk2 >= 2.2.0 (not provided)
* depcheck: package at-spi needs libbonobo >= 2.4.0 (not provided)
* depcheck: package gstreamer-plugins needs libXv.so.1 (not provided)
* depcheck: package desktop-printing needs redhat-config-printer-gui >= 0.6.67-1 (not provided)

quitting
Now, this seems curious to me since I'm installing from allegedly complete CDROMs. But maybe what I need to do is to boot from the floppy and run an OS level upgrade. OK, but let me first remove Ximian. So I've been trying to understand what is meant by "uninstall ximian". Does this mean I rerun the installer piped from ximian.com? No uninstall option is provided that I can find. Do I run redhat and mark packages for uninstallation or use rpm -e? Doesn't seem like such a good idea, since gnome depends on it:
# rpm -q -a | grep ximian
gtk2-2.0.6-8.ximian.80.1
libgal2.0_5-1.99.10-0.ximian.5.1
aspell-en-0.51.0-0.ximian.5.1
rcd-1.4.5-0.ximian.5.2
red-carpet-2.0.3-0.ximian.5.1.1
libgnomecanvas-2.2.0.2-0.ximian.5.2
libgnomeprintui22-2.2.1.3-0.ximian.5.1
pspell-compat-0.12.2-0.ximian.4
aspell-0.50.3-1.ximian.2
aspell-compat-0.33.7.1-0.ximian.5.4
gtkhtml3.0-3.0.9-0.ximian.5.1
gnome-spell1.0-1.0.5-0.ximian.5.1
libgnomeprint22-2.2.1.3-0.ximian.5.1
libgtkhtml3.0_2-3.0.9-0.ximian.5.1
libsoup-1.99.28-0.ximian.5.1
evolution-1.4.5-0.ximian.5.1
If I remove gtk I have to remove practically everything, including software that wasn't installed by ximian. Gack! Can someone let me know how to force these to get fixed up?

You need the package 'kernel-source' installed to
build the drivers.
I'd tend to ignore some of those that replied (They
got it sort of
wrong)
See this:

Cheers, Michael
I guess I really didn't make myself clear. When I did
rpm -qa |grep kernel-source
I got back that the rpm WAS installed.
Now, where does it get placed? I thought it was in
/usr/src/linux.xxxxx

Thanks for the updates.. I didn't know about this.. Where did you find out??
I've downloaded the patch.. taken a look at it.. but noticed that some of
the files related to Cpufreq is _out_of_date_ ??? I had one file that is
dated Aug 28, but the one included in the -pac patch is dated Jan.
There are _also_ some differences if I compare the actual source code..
Since I'm not well verse in "C", I'm not sure if it's a minor code fix or
anything else.
Currently, My patch is running OK..
BTW, how can I find out what patches were included in the -pac patch? Is
there a list that says something like --> -pac1 (contained patches for
swsusp, supermount, cpufreq, etc..etc..)
That would be really helpful to determine if I need this or that..
Thanks

inconsistencies in repositories
by Paolo Nesti Poggi
Hi,
after reading documentation on fedora.redhat.org, yum and apt sites I can't
see any other way out than asking you for help.
the problem:
I got installed a server with fedora, I have ssh root access to it. The
installation was done without mysql and without php-mysql.
I'm trying to install it now from command line.
I understand that the right tool for it is yum and not up2date.
However when I try to install i get:
# yum install php-mysql

Now, I can't believe that php-mysql-client is not available in the official
repositories fedora.redhat.org etc.
Besides, I read on this list and, if I recall, on tht fedora site, that the
current version for php on fedora is 4.3.4, what I see is only 4.3.3 and no
update is offered. I also have installed Fedora on a machine at home some
time ago and it also has php 4.3.3 and doesn't get updated (it has php-mysql
though).
So the questions are:
1) Is there something wong with me (meaning, that although I'v used hours to
read docs I didn't get the clue), or with the repositories?
2) How can I install pjp-mysql?
Thanks for any help

Potentially objectionable xscreensaver module (GLSnake)
by Sean E. Millichamp
I just wanted to let everyone know that the xscreensaver module
"GLSnake" has two object displays that some folks might feel is
inappropriate or objectionable.
Much to my surprise, I stumbled across it drawing an "erect penis" when
I returned from lunch today. So I did some investigating:
$ strings /usr/X11R6/lib/xscreensaver/glsnake | grep penis
erect penis
flaccid penis
$ rpm -q xscreensaver
xscreensaver-4.14-2
Some folks who are planning on (or have) installed Fedora Core at home
or in conservative office settings might want to check and make sure
glsnake isn't enabled by default.
If I end up deploying Fedora Core 1 to any desktops at my clients I will
clearly have to sanitize or remove this module in some fashion.
I hope that the heads-up helps someone...

Where is the NPTL kernel patch?
by Ian Pilcher
I need to build a "pristine" kernel for debugging purposes, but I've
read that Fedora Core basically won't work with a kernel that doesn't
support NPTL.
So where can I find the patch(es) that add NPTL support to the kernel?
Thanks!

Not sure if this is a problem or not....
by Bryan Anderson
...because I don't even know what it is, or what I might use
it for, but in KDE:
Main Menu | Control Centre | System Admin | Linux Kernel
I get an error message:
The kernel configuration could not be read due to the
following error:
/usr/src/linux-2.4/drivers/net/wan/Config.in, line 86:
then
^ parse error
Either your kernel sources contain invalid configuration
rules or you just found a bug in the KDE Kernel Configurator.
Not sure if it's a problem or not, or if anyone else was
getting the same thing.....

Issue with sendmail and virtusertable
by Scott Burch
Hello,
I have put the following entry into virtusertable:
user(a)domain.com user(a)machine.domain.com
Yes, I ran 'makemap hash virtusertable < virtusertable'
The problem is that mail is not being forwarded to machine.domain.com it
is going to the mail relay listed in the MX record for domain.com.
I have run sendmail -bt and performed a /map check, and it returns the
correct values.
