What's in the new kernel?
by Kelson
So what's actually changed in the kernel 2.4.22-1.2129.nptl
package? Obviously it's not the do_brk fix, because that was already in
the kernel that shipped with FC1. But I haven't seen anything, either here
or on fedora-announce, indicating what's different and why it's worth
updating the kernel.

Has anybody had any problem mod-probing pcmcia_core.o on kernel 2.4.23?
by Benjamin Arai
I made the kernel.
Copied the System-map, bzImage, vmlinux to /boot. I also created the
initrd images:
mktinitrd initrd-2.4.23.img 2.4.23.
Whe I rebooted everything seemed to work and pcmcia said [ OK ] on boot
but when I try to modprobe pcmcia_core.o it says it cannot find it.

up2date -- advice sought
by Timothy Murphy
I am running Fedora on a number of computers.
To date I have "up2date"d each of them separately,
but this obviously involves download duplication.
So this time I gave the command
up2date -d --tmpdir=/opt/Fedora
(a directory I had created).
(1) Now I have the downloaded files in /tmp/Fedora .
I know I could just run say "rpm -Uvh *.rpm" in that directory.
But is this the correct thing to do?
(2) I'm not clear if up2date keeps a record of downloaded RPMs
other than the list in /var/log/rpmpkgs*.
Can installing packages "by hand", ie by rpm,
cause any confusion?
(3) Do the files in /opt/Fedora represent a valid "repository"?
If so, what entry do I add to /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources
to make up2date look in /opt/Fedora ?
Also. if this entry appears first,
will up2date look there,
and then look at the "standard" entries, eg

What laptop do you have? I'm curious.. My D600 has the fan _All_ the time..
I'm not sure how to stop it. I bet that's eating up my batt time.

Aren't thet $$$??? I have the beta versions of it.. But currently with the
2.4.23 kernel, it can't seem to compile. It used to compile fine when I
patched serial_core.c at line 1073
from
[original]
down(&state->count_sem);
spin_lock_irqsave(&info->lock, flags);
if ((tty->count) == 1) && (state->count != 1)) {
/*
* Uh, oh. tty->count is 1, which means that the tty
* structure will be freed. state->count should always
[Patched]
down(&state->count_sem);
spin_lock_irqsave(&info->lock, flags);
---> if ((atomic_read(&tty->count) == 1) && (state->count != 1)) {
/*
* Uh, oh. tty->count is 1, which means that the tty
* structure will be freed. state->count should always
But now with that patch, I get this during compile..
* cimpiling (gcc) serial_hsf.c
in file included from serial_hsf.c:897
serial_core.c : In function `uart close`:
serial_core.c :1073 request for member 'counter' in something not a
structure or a union
make : ***[serial_hsf.o] Error 1
Anyone know what's the issue here.. or have the fix for it?? Serial_core.c
is actually "Free Software" as stated in the source code.
Help... Need this for my modem.. (& I need the modem cause I don't have
broadband)
Thanks

Compiling custom kernel
by SUNYER Emmanuel
Hi everyone,
I just wonder how to compile a custom kernel (2.4.23 for instance) with
Fedora... I apparently have gcc version issues and a google search
didn't help.
Thanks in advance

evolution calendar problems
by Michael P. Soulier
Has anyone else seen this behaviour from Evolution 1.4, shipping
with FC1?
Any time I open the calendar, I get the task list. If I drag the
task list down, I finally see the calendar, but in yearly view only. I
can't get anything but a bunch of months all showing up. I can't pull up
the current day. If I fiddle around enough, the whole thing just
crashes.
Truly sad.
