Subject: Re: Off Topic Chit-Chat #Fedora
I agree with off-topic discussion as long as it doesn't develop
into a flame
war. The general bot statement also sounds like a good idea.

Hi all,
Following a recent discussion in #fedora-ops , could I suggest the following
with regard to off-topic conversation in #fedora?
1) That we take a blanket view amongst all ops, that off-topic conversation
is *not* detrimental to the channel, provided it is done in an appropriate
manner and not whilst there are outstanding support issues awaiting to be
dealt with. I, for one actually think off-topic chit-chat can be beneficial
to the overall atmosphere in the channel, and will possibly encourage those
who have problems (but possibly too scared to air them) to speak up.
I also, can't see any actual problems with taking this approach.
2) as a result of this, we have an additional bot alias, which triggers a
non-discriminate notice about off-topic conversation in the channel, and not
at a specific user. This alias could be triggered from within the channel,
or perhaps if appropriate from within #fedora-ops and could possibly read
something like...
"<fedbot> asks if anyone currently engaging in conversation not directly
related to seeking or providing assistance, would kindly consider moving
their conversation(s) to the #fedora-social (or some other) channel instead.
It isn't a requirement, but it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
everyone!"
I think this is a trivial request, and hope dearly that it doesn't develop
into some sort of -ops battle, as I don't think we need to lower ourselves
to that level. I also don't think it warrants coming off the ML and onto the
meeting agenda, but then that is up to the rest of you.
As with the issues we identified with Trac (ie, positive feedback rarely
gets voiced, whereas complaints regularly get voiced) I would appreciate
feedback from all of my peers, even if its "I don't care".
Thanks all
Kind Regards
