I was going to do these individually, but it will just turn into spam, and
on the most part this is a no-brainer.
I propose the removal of the following members of the sig, on the basis
they carry a vote currently..but may not be active, or interested in the
sig.
ausil, bit4man, deepsa, ivazquez, jkeating, jsmith, jsteffan, mkearey,
pfrields, wtogami, kanarip
I guess the simple thing is, if you agree with the removal, vote with
"+1", if you disagree with it all "-1", and if you disagree with one (or
more particular user's removal "-1 <username>"
Otherwise this thread could easily turn into 10 threads and get
unnecessarily messy.

IRC SIG Banner and Member Icons
by Randall Berry
Some time back I filed a ticket for the design team to come up with some
banners for the IRC SIG pages as well as some icons for member pages.
Yesterday I got a reply. If you have any ideas that you would like to
see please post your comments and ideas here:

Please briefly describe the interaction that caused you to file this
ticket: i asked a question, and was met with rather a lot of repeated
hostility from EvilBob. One thing is to ask people to read the manual,
another is to repeatedly do it in a way that insinuates that the user is a
moron.
Please note other IRC nicks that are involved in this interaction:
EvilBob
Please describe what action or positive change could be adopted based on
this feedback: Teaching EvilBob about basic good behaviour.
Any additional notes or logs:
<adamt> Hi, using f17, is anybody aware of an easy way of installing the
git contrib things?
<FranciscoD> adamt: git contrib things?
* ciupicri has quit (Quit: Leaving.)
<EvilBob> adamt: man yum
* ikonia (~irc@unaffiliated/ikonia) has joined #fedora
<EvilBob> adamt: read about groups, listing and installing them
<adamt> EvilBob, that hardly helps if the software isn't available in the
official repos in the first place.
<muep> what software are you looking for?
<EvilBob> It isn't?
<adamt> FranciscoD, https://github.com/apenwarr/git-subtree/blob/master
/THIS-REPO-IS-OBSOLETE talks about git-subtree being included in v.
1.7.11, but only in the contrib subtree, and it doesn't seem to be
included in the official git packages for f17
<EvilBob> You've yet to be clear EXACTLY what you are looking for so
you've hardly helped anyone help you
* dayangkun has quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
<FranciscoD> adamt: someone will have to package them up, if they arent in
the repos
<adamt> so i'm asking whether anybody made another git package that
contains that.
<adamt> (or know of anybody who did, etc.)
<fedbot> Hey, we want to make the channel better. How about dropping us a
note and let us know how you feel the channel is doing, good or bad and
give feedback about users or issues also. https://fedorahosted.org/irc-
support-sig/ (Tickets reviewed weekly)
<muep> adamt: you might file a bug if some important content from the
upstream git sources is not included in fedora packages
<FranciscoD> muep: ++
* sayan has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
<FranciscoD> adamt: yum list git* gives me quite a few packages, had a
look at them?
<EvilBob> /usr/share/doc/git-1.7.11.4/contrib/subtree/git-subtree.sh
* netsjanek (~janek(a)metroeth-nat34.217.146.194.generacja.pl) has joined
#fedora
<adamt> Oho.
* amessina has quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
<adamt> Seems rather weird it ended up in ../doc/.. but thanks for finding
that.
<EvilBob> Whatever
<adamt> It take it my lack of smileys have fostered an unfriendly
atmosphere.
* triad has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
* Deathvalley122 has quit (Excess Flood)
<adamt> *I
<EvilBob> read the man page for yum
<EvilBob> learn to use the tools so others don't have to do it for you.
<adamt> How is this a yum issue?
<EvilBob> It's not a yum issue, it's a user issue
* amessina (~amessina@2001:470:c1dc:7779:d6be:d9ff:fe8d:7c1e) has joined
#fedora
<EvilBob> and the user is you
<adamt> Considering the script was probably included in some documentation
dir by accident, and actually isn't installed, i really don't get why
you're so unfriendly towards me and my original question.
<muep> yum has search functions which could have been used to find the
subtree stuff
<EvilBob> read the man page for yum
<EvilBob> learn to use the tools so others don't have to do it for you.
<muep> sometimes scripts are intentionally provided just as documentation
and not as easily accessible programs
<adamt> rtfm isn't a nice answer, you could just have said "yum can search
for files, check the man-page to get going", and everybody would have been
happy.
<EvilBob> It's hardly helpful to spout off that something is hardly
helpful when you have not even bothered to look on your own
<EvilBob> adamt: I did
<EvilBob> <EvilBob> adamt: man yum
<EvilBob> <EvilBob> adamt: read about groups, listing and installing them
<EvilBob> that was based on your initially vague query
<adamt> Ok i'm going to be the bigger man, thank you for finding the
script.
<EvilBob> whatever
<EvilBob> read the man page for yum
Thanks for your feedback!

Please briefly describe the interaction that caused you to file this
ticket: had an issue and user whom i found out later was an OP was not
welcoming and very dismissive. I'm thinking of not coming back.
Please note other IRC nicks that are involved in this interaction:
Discordian
Please describe what action or positive change could be adopted based on
this feedback: Discordian's attitude is not one of what an OP should be,
Discordian might have a wealth of knowledge but doesn't seem to have the
disposition or character to be able to be an OP, regardsless of this his
attitude should be more welcoming towards others even as a normal user.
Any additional notes or logs:
conversation as follows:
igz: caravel: no good, still the same
Tigz: i did try and get the error with no luck but it executes at the
following point
- oldwzd has disconnected (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
- mtk has joined the room
Tigz: GRUB loading
Tigz: Welcome to GRUB!
caravel: Tigz: you said the "version" of grub was different to what you
had before ?
Tigz: then Error:
Tigz: in the file the one I uploaded to the one it replaced when re-
installing it was different the new one looked like yours my old one
didn't have half of the information in it
- Wharncliffe has disconnected (Quit: Lost terminal)
Tigz: but to get my old one i had to run the grub-install command from the
cd within rescue mode for fedora
caravel: ok, did you "reinstall" grub onto your disk/mbr after that ? (not
the package, but using the command from grub2 package...)
- searcher has disconnected (Quit: Leaving.)
Tigz: cause the open suse grub version 0.97 overwritten it
caravel: ok
Tigz: no.... - did i miss a step
Discordian: Err right
Discordian: so now you are on grub1
- oldwzd has joined the room
caravel: Tigz: that's what I call a stupid "distro boot loader war", none
are designed to "share" a given grub install
Discordian: not grub2
Tigz: no fedora's grub 2
Tigz: text mode of fedora says GNU GRUB 2.00~beta4
* caravel isn't following :-)
Tigz: ok installed fedora 17
Tigz: then installed opensuse 12.1
Tigz: i didn't realise that suse was grub 1
Tigz: and overwritten the grub so all i could get was suse
Tigz: to rectify i found out that fedora is grub 2
Tigz: so to fix i found an article about fixing issues in fedora by using
the rescue mode
- amessina has joined the room
Discordian: I see a mess of fail
* caravel install grub into the first sector of each (respective cf.
distro) /boot partition, then uses a "neutral" grub loader that
"chainloads" others. One way of solving this...
Tigz: i did this and used the grub-install /dev/sda to get fedora to work
and add suse later
Discordian: when you stop messing around maybe you can be helped
Tigz: sorry trying to catch up caravel as he was confussed
- supervacuo has joined the room
caravel: thanks, it's clearer indeed :-)
Discordian: Is there a Fedora issue here tigz?
blami_: i think it is - user experience
Tigz: yes both systems are listed in fedora's grub 2, but the grub is in
text mode i can tell cause it has all the information about pressing c for
command line
Tigz: all i want is to get it back to graphical mode
caravel: Tigz: I'd suggest you try the solution I described here above :
that's the end of such "distro war" : each one will then nicely be able to
update its own grub and so on
caravel: (but that might still need a fix cf. graphic mode indeed)
Discordian: You know multi-booting requires skills
Discordian: You seem to lack those
caravel: Tigz: did you run vbeinfo from Fedora grub2 cli, as I suggested
before ?
Discordian: why don't you just do one os
- wolfbyte has disconnected (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
Tigz: i have basic sys admin skills
Tigz: my main system is windows
- jo-erlend has disconnected (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
Tigz: its the advance linux stuff i sometimes have issues with
Tigz: cause it takes me longer to figure it out
Discordian: why then are you trying to multiboot linux?
- jo-erlend has joined the room
Tigz: because im trying to find a distro to setup a honeypot and IDS
Discordian: stick with one linux distro and use that
Tigz: and linux might be better suited for my needs with the equipment i
have to use for it
Discordian: ...
Discordian: Is there some reason I should spend time helping you ?
Discordian: You don't seem committed to Fedora
Tigz: because the honeypot and IDS was going on fedora opensuse was just
going to be a play system unaltered
Discordian: .mw
* Discordian sighs
Discordian: You should learn one distro
blami_: Discordian: why?
oldwzd: actually he should learn them all, then decide what he likes and
stick to it.. XD
Tigz: noone said you had to help, i just thought someone might want to
- spybert has disconnected (Quit: Leaving)
mosno: "all"? lol
Discordian: or what oldwzd said
blami_: Tigz: the best approach to do what you want without pain is what
caravel said
- gaurdro has joined the room
Discordian: however the keyword is *learn*
Tigz: oldwzd: thanks but each person says that they prefer a different one
and I have to work out which one is better and etc.
Tigz: I can learn multiple distro's at once just fine thanks
Discordian: clearly
- sayan has joined the room
- arkiver has disconnected (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
Discordian: I'm reasonably sure opensuse current uses grub2 not grub1
Tigz: most of this i can work out just fine without help, i just wanted
not to spend a few days working it out
- arkiver has joined the room
Tigz: thats not what my installed distro said
- bodhizazen has joined the room
Tigz: but hell what do i know ima windows man
blami_: Tigz: 11.3 in my case uses grub1
oldwzd: i dont use dualboot anymore, as i see no use of windows exept for
gaming pleasure (also a lot of headake due to that os and buggs that end
up messing with the gaming)
Tigz: oldwzd: thanks i understand, but this is all learning as being self
taught in most things im trying to get systems up at home to learn and
advance my career.
caravel: Tigz: consider what I suggested : within each distro, just
install grub into /dev/sdaX where X is your /boot part. Then, from Fedora,
install yet a third grub onto your MBR or its own partition also, as you
wish, as a "neutral" grub loader. That last one will get a very simple
menu to "chainload" all your OSs
- MStoykov has joined the room
muep: Tigz: I have used a scheme similar to what caravel recommends. I'd
recommend it too
Tigz: caravel: thanks i think i understand, i was able to fix the last
boot issue with 3 seperate OS none fedora nor open suse, i change os's
and it falls in a heap
Tigz: talking to you caravel i found that i screwed up like i thought and
will have to redo my system
Discordian: Chainload is good
Tigz: all i need to work out is the right way to do it.
blami_: Tigz: what caravel says will work also for kernel updates in all
distros installed
caravel: Tigz: here is (an extract of...) my "neutral" boot loader :
http://fpaste.org/4bzm/ I have generated it manually, then hacked it
manually. I only change it whenever I need to add or remove a new distro
to chainload
caravel: Tigz: please note that mine might look a little more complex that
what you may need, since I have 2 volume groups (LVM) : one is a standard
one and contains one LV per /boot partition, another one is encrypted as a
whole (LUKS) and contains one LV per /root partition plus swaps and data
caravel: so, it's all encrypted "as much as possible" (boot parts can't
yet be AFAIK), it's my own approach of things :-)
- Arbition has disconnected (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
Tigz: very nice caravel.
caravel: doing so, cf. the stanzas I left in what I uploaded on fpaste,
for example, F14 was very happy to keep updating its grub until it got
EOL, while F16 was very happy too with its distinct version and configs
:-D
caravel: yes, even distinct Fedora versions can "fight" for grub, of
course...
I later went to the ##fedora-ops channel and got more attitude from
Discordian there when i went to discuss this issue.
so far my first day in the Fedora channels have not been good.
Thanks for your feedback!

The bot is regularly asking for feedback which happens too often in my
opinion
I think the most important thing in the channel are the users and how the
interact with each other. I dont think changing anything in the channel
would help. If you still want feedback Id recommend putting it into the
topic. The bot messages are too frequently IMHO and steal my attention.
I remember #fedora being kinda mean towards newcomers who often ask simple
questions. This has fortunately changed and the channel has become really
nice. It would be good to keep things nice and friendly and to act if it
gets out of control to keep a good atmosphere.
