I would like to remind everybody before we go down this road, it
should be applicable to all channels (i.e. not just #fedora). As I
understand it #fedora-ops and the IRC-Operators-SIG was established
for OPs of all #fedora-* channels and not just #fedora. So based on
that we would be making a policy that could be applicable to more
than just the #fedora channel.
That was not my understanding. The fedora irc support sig was
established to improve support in #fedora. While we have "spread out"
to #fedora-social (because we point people there for off topic chat)
and #fedora-unregistered and #fedora-ops, our main focus should be
improving support in #fedora. We don't have any mandate or control over
say #fedora-devel or #fedora-qa.
In other words to become your statement should read:
Should we allow self nominations?
Should it be only any existing #fedora-* op?
Should it be more than one existing #fedora-* op?
Now based on that do we really want to go down this road? I think
not, I believe that any #fedora-* op should be able to make a
nomination since the goal is to make #fedora-* a better place in the
communities eyes. I also believe that each and every nomination
should be evaluated on not just past performance, but how they could
improve the impression of the #fedora-* community. If that is not the
case please let me know and then why are we dictating who can and can
not be an OP in #fedora-social?
The problem there is I could come along and make #fedora-unicorns and
start nominating all kinds of people for ops in #fedora?
Now why do I bring this up, I bring it up for those of you who do
not
believe opsec would make a good OP based on his past impressions made
with other OPs. That should not matter, it is not about who likes who
or who has issues with who. It is about the good of the community as
it relates to Fedora. There are very few in our group that has done as
much as he as for the community. Take a look at
http://centoshelp.org,
this is a site that I have had the pleasure of assisting Warren
(opsec) create for CentOS. He also did the same on our Fedora Unity
sites till he started getting persecuted in #fedora and other
#fedora-* channels. He has always been a Fedora community supporter,
hence the reason he has a Fedora cloak. For quite sometime he was the
sole reason the Fedora Unity servers including
fpaste.org was online
as he fully funded the use of those servers out of his own pockets to
assist in supporting the community. He spends/has spent many hours
in #fedora assisting new users with configuring and installing fedora
and is a staunch Fedora supporter through thick and thin. Does he
have issue periodically berating users? Sometimes, but who doesn't
at times?
I think he's done amazing things with howtos and help. Kudos.
I also think at least his main nick has been doing ok in #fedora
helping people of late. I would like to see this continue and see more
data before I would want him as an op. This is all just IMHO. I don't
speak for anyone else.
Now based on all of this is why I have given my nod of approval to
having him nominated as and op in #fedora and #fedora-social. So
before you judge somebody just based on your impression of them you
may want to look at what good they have done for the community and
not just base it on your one dimensional impression of them from your
minor interactions/disagreements within one irc channel
But we are nominating them to be an operator and manage and diffuse
issues in #fedora. Just because you do great work in one area doesn't
mean you should be automatically added in another area.
