Re: Move Evolution to Extras?

I can't say I'm some kind of expert e-mail user, but Evo 2.6 seems to
be working mostly OK here. I use it against dovecot-1.0/IMAP at home
(two client machines) and with Exchange/Exchange at work. Since I also
run LDAP addressbook at home, I find it rather useful to be able to
edit entries directly from Evo. Having native access to GAL at work is
also very useful.
I would most definitely be in favour of fixing bugs and spliting out
packages that provide functionality for other software and getting rid
of bogus dependencies. However, I'm not sure if removing this package
from core is a good idea. Is there a decent replacement under Fedora
default desktop (Gnome) that covers all ground that Evo covers now?

open DRM failed (Operation not permitted)
by Émeric Maschino
Hi,
With yesterday's updates, all the needed bits to enable DRI acceleration
with ATI graphics adapters sporting a R300 chipset were back in
Rawhide.
Unfortunately, on my Itanium workstation with an ATI FireGL X1 graphics
adapter, I'm getting "open DRM failed (Operation not permitted)" when
I'm invoking glxinfo or glxgears (for example). I already experienced
this problem before the R300 bits were removed from Rawhide
(https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2006-
February/msg01324.html). From Xorg.0.log, DRM seems to be initialized
properly. I've checked the permissions on the /dev/dri/card0 file, they
seem to be OK:
crw------- emeric root system_u:object_r:dri_device_t card0
(as user emeric)
Mike Harris didn't see this problem before and suggested me that it may
be due to udev, so I've filed a bug on bugzilla
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=184045). Altering
the rules as suggested there didn't help.
Disabling SELinux as advised in this post
(http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2006-
February/msg01681.html) didn't help. I have a Section DRI in my
xorg.conf file (mode 0666). stracing glxinfo as in this post
(http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2006-
February/msg01638.html) shows a similar error.
Any idea what's going wrong?
Many thanks,
Émeric

'-Wunused-param' in kernel compiles?
by Tom London
The last few kernels appear to be compiled with '-Wunused-param'. That right?
Is this a 'going forward' feature?
Appears to break vmware.
Just want to know if I need work on this, or if it will revert at some
future point...

gnome/gtk v1 in rawhide
by Peter Robinson
I seem to remember I've asked this before... and the answer was
because gnucash needs it. So now that the gnucash version in rawhide
is 1.9.x and hence finally (yay) heading for gtk/gnome2 support can
all the gtk1/gnome1 stuff finally be shunted off to extras for some
core-size-reduction-love?

Fedora Looks Fresh and Functions Well
by Benjy Grogan
Hello,
I'm really enjoying using FC5. Tomboy is a great tool for jotting
down ideas. I actually put together this email using a few tomboy
notes. I have a few suggestions -- that you can take or leave -- that
I wanted to share to help out with 'Fedora's way forward'. :) Here
they are:
1) A welcome to Fedora (or RHEL) tutorial for new accounts and even
maybe a tips section everytime you log in. DAC would be a really good
topic for new users.
2) Have a place in Preferences set up for the two or three available
Javas (Sun's and the OSS ones). Then when you have installed Sun's
Java you have a place to switch back to the old one, and vice versa.
(Question: Is a compiled Azureus the same if it's based on Sun or
GCJ?)
3) I have a question on codecs. Is it possible to get all OSS codecs
these days based on the GStreamer plugin system? I think the whole
audio/video codec problem would go away if there was a GStreamer Codec
management system where OSS codecs would be there by default and then
the user would go out and get all the proprietary GStreamer codecs
he/she is missing. It should be simple to look at a Fedora system,
and say "alright, got those ones, but missing these ones (like
mp3/avi). And I can figure out where to get them." And this
presupposes a future where there are only Gstreamer codecs.
4) Since Firefox is one of the most important pieces of the Linux OS
these days, it would be great to have all of the alphas, betas and RCs
available in update-testing. That would allow some users to test
Firefox for bugs over an extended period of time before 2.0 or 3.0
comes out. Obviously, under some guidance from Fedora with all the
patches they put into it.
5) An updating system (maybe using deltarpms or smartrpms) that could
compete with the updating system available on Windows XP and OS/X.
Smaller updates are really needed.
That's all! Back to testing out FC5. And Thanks!

Where's eclipse-cdt?
by Émeric Maschino
Hi,
The Fedora Core 5 release notes say:
13.3. Eclipse Development Environment
* Eclipse 3.1M6 is compiled as a native application.
* The C Development Tool (CDT) has been included.
But I can't find the CDT related components :-(

Making /etc/localtime a symlink?
by Stefan Neufeind
Hi,
I was wondering if, instead of currently making /etc/localtime a copy of
the timezone to use, it would be a good idea to actually make it a
symlink. In the (unlikely) event that information for a timezone would
chance, updates would take effect automatically.
initial /etc/localtime: part of glibc
e.g. /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Berlin: part of tzdata
So imho this would involve bundling /etc/localtime as a symlink in
glibc, a dep to tzdata (there is a dep from glibc-common to tzdata) and
adjusting installer etc. to not make copies but create symlinks.
What do others think?

Stefan

FC5 boot problems
by Michael J. Knox
OK, this has (sort of) been covered else where, however, the solutions
to other people's issues have not worked for me.
Clean install of FC5 and on the first boot, the system appears to stop
at "Starting udev:"
I do not have pcmciautils installed, I have tried noacpi, single,
removing rhgb and "quiet", I have updated my kernel to the latest one
from updates. I have moved various udev rule files from
/etc/udev/rules.d/ to see if any are causing me grief, but nothing.
System runs FC4/FC3 fine. This is my first time installing FC5, I
previously had installed test releases, which worked fine.
I am at a loss as to what the issue is. RH bug #186164 covers this, but
as I said, I don't have pcmciautils install.
Any pointers?

Suspend problems on a thinkpad?
by Brad Smith
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Has anyone found a trick for (or even had a problem) getting suspend to work properly under FC5 on a
Thinkpad T30? Under FC4 everything worked fine on mine, I just had to include "apm=on acpi=off"
in the kernel args. After a fresh install of FC5, with or without the kernel args, it is a no go.
When I close the laptop it goes into suspend, but when I open it again I experience varying levels
of freezing up. I say varying because sometimes it's locked completely, sometimes the mouse moves
but the cursor does not change, clicks are unresponsive and the keyboard does nothing. One time
things seemed to work but when I moved my mouse over the gnome panel it disappeared. I switched to a
VC and back, which somehow fixed the problem.
Needless to say this is a major obstacle for me. Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance!
