I hope the hit list doesn't get much longer, you're moving all of the command-line power of Linux into guis, exactly the opposite of why pretty much everyone I work with uses it.
I'm sure it's tucked away in the gconf registry somewhere. Anyway..
I haven't been following this closely, so apologies if I overlap with
something already said.
I'd like to ask a few questions about how system-wide configuration is
being replaced by session-wide configuration. It is as if the desktop is
being assumed to have a single user. These questions come from someone
used to doing command-line configuration, not the gui stuff.
There seem to be a lot of new programs that replicate functionality that
you might expect a system-wide daemon to perform, plus perhaps a fancy
(tiny) *optional* gui to interface with the end-user.
But I don't really know how pup or NetworkManager work, which is why I'm
sending this e-mail. I'm sure other people (probably not on this list)
might have made similar assumptions.
For example, pup checks for updates, notifies the user if there are any,
then lets them choose to install them.
What if there is more than one user? Does everyone get to decide?
Why isn't some yum updater daemon downloading the updates automatically,
and pup then springing the question on the user about whether they want
to update? Is this not as good?
Networking with NetworkManager - is this per-user too? Can all users on
a system decide which networking connection they want to take
preference? Is there a scoring system to decide who wins?
Gnome power manager - why does each user get an icon in the notification
area? Can they all decide when the computer goes to sleep?
Thanks,

OK, so configuring a DNS server has to look exactly the same as setting up
the theme for my window manager...

OK, so you use a generic LDAP browser/editor to change configurations. What
makes that better than using $EDITOR on text files? I see massive
disadvantages (LDAP becomes a requirement to even start the machine
usefully, network breakdowns make everything freeze, one more service to
worry about on a server type machine, ...) and the only advantages I see
are a single configuration syntax (but the underlying semantics stay as
messed up as today (if it doesn't get even worse), so this doesn't help
that much) and the possibility to distribute configurations all over the
place (which normally is jut a single machine, so not too much of a gain).

I /don't/ want any more complexity in a web server process, it has to
remain auditable (and as independent of external sources as possible, for
paranoia's sake).

Then I really don't get it.

It does. I stand corrected.
The page says $50K one time flat fee for a decoder. Is there any good
reason Red Hat shouldn't simply buy that license for some outfit with
a track record, like the lame developers? MP3 problem solved,
relatively cheaply (e.g., less than half the annual cost ofjust one
additional full-time coder).
Yes, I know feeding patent parasites is unpleasant. But we come back to
the central question here: do we want ideological purity at the expense of
victory, or do we want actual victory so that *we* get to effectively set
the terms of software development in the future?
I know which side of that question *I* come down on...

compile a kernel to include a module
by Mihamina Rakotomandimby
Hi,
I have to copile my own kernel in order to have some options
hard-included (not as modules) and some to modules to be activated.
I do want to make it "the fedora way" (not the generic method) by using
a src.rpm.
I thus need to edit the kernel compilation configuration file in order
to include my stuff.
What tutorial do you recommend me? I already tried in the old times and
as far as I remember, the command line to launch is not a simple
"rpmbuild": I have to specify the target architecture and some things.
Would you have a link to recommend?
Thank you.

rawhide->fc5; X won't start
by sean darcy
I was running rawhide updated to March 10. Went on vacation, yesterday
did a full upgrade to fc5. Used yum to get updates released. Now X
won't start. I think it's some sort of xfs problem.
with gnome, I get the fedora bubble logo, then a black screen, alt-f1
gets me the console, which shows:
waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE "unix/7100" refcount
is 2, should be 1, fixing
syslog shows:
gnome_segv2[3263]: segfault at 0000000000xxxxxxxx .........
kde also won't start. The console shows:
xset: bad font path element (#76), .......
and syslog shows kded, ksplash, kcminit, and ksmserver segfaulting.
I've restarted xfs ( no errors in syslog ). I've rebooted.
Do I need to do some mkfontdir voodoo in each font directory? What did
the upgrade change? I've seen no similar problems posted, so I assume
it's a rawhide->fc5 issue.

[ANN] Release Notes Errata - Wiki Freeze
by Robert 'Bob' Jensen
Hello Docs, Devel and Marketing,
I would like to take a snapshot of the Release Notes Beats on the Wiki
to be used as an errata release for the web on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at
23:59 UTC, we will clean up and push to translation on Thursday, April
6, 2006 giving translation a week to get as many languages available to
us over the following week.
One question I have for Development is can we then roll these new
updated release notes and translations in to a package update for our
users?
The web and maybe package errata would be available on Friday, April 15,
2006.

Unless the configuration is gotten by telepathy, it is in a file
somewhere...

A little bit too late for that, IMHO. "Content providers" already know that:
1. They can do this legally (ie. patents/DRM are reality)
2. They have widespread platforms to do it (Mac/Win+PC/iPod etc.)
3. They will come up with new patents/laws to prevent us from entering
This is a game of catch-up that we'll never win. Once "content
providers" tasted consumer blood with patents/DRM, I'm willing to bet
they'll want more of it, not less. Any attempt to wedge anything
"free" (in whichever sense of the word) right smack in the middle,
will be met with (threats of) lawsuits.
It's just a matter of time before we see this happen. And my bet is
that making it easier to install an MP3 player on Fedora is going make
about zero difference. I'm afraid most of us don't have access to
boardrooms in which decisions about the future of copyright, patents,
"content" and hardware is made. If all desktop/notebook/consumer
hardware went DRM/TPM tomorrow, hardware manufacturers would stand to
lose such small percentage of sales that they wouldn't think twice
about cutting us off. Call me cynical if you wish...
