Update notification applet for FC?
by Joachim Frieben
FC3 was the last release to include a working update notifier for the GNOME
panel. This also holds in the case of current FC rawhide. Are there plans to
fill this gap? Right now, this constitutes a major lack of functionality.

Outrageous memory usage with cElementTree
by Shahms King
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I was trying to figure out why my small python application was using
outrageous amounts of memory on FC5 and managed to track it down to a
single anonymous rw mapping that's 32380K. It only gets mapped after
importing cElementTree but I can't figure out why. It doesn't happen
under FC4 or FC3. Is this memory actually used or is it another
artifact of Linux's often questionable RSS statistics? 32MB is a lot of
memory to be using for no apparent reason, especially as it is
per-process unshared memory. It's particularly vexing using mod_python
and kid (which uses cElementTree, if available) as it means that every
single httpd process uses ~50MB base memory, which is ridiculous.

Missing update announcements
by Bernd Bartmann
Now that FC5 final is out a problem seems to reappear that I thought
was gone since FC4 came out: FC core updates appear on the download
mirrors but some of them never get announced on fedora-announce-list.
Since the release of FC5 the following announcments are missing:
For FC4:
anacron-2.3-36.FC4
dia-0.94-13.fc4
dovecot-0.99.14-8.fc4
For FC5:
cairo-1.0.4-1
GConf2-2.14.0-1
xscreensaver-4.24-2
gnome-screensaver-2.14.0-1.fc5
liboil-0.3.8-1.fc5
newt-0.52.2-6
xterm-211-4.FC5
I've opened bugs for every missing announcements and tracker bugs to
get an overview. For FC4 the tracker bug is #161106, for FC5 it is
#188051.
Can someone @fedora or @redhat please look into this issue. I thought
the process was somehow automated since FC4 came out. It would be
helpful to get an explanation about the internal process how updates
are released.
Thanks in advance,
Bernd.

who is broken when buring is working with one burner and not with the other....
by dragoran
I have to burners installed
1,0,0 100) 'PLEXTOR ' 'DVDR PX-755A ' '1.02' Removable CD-ROM
1,1,0 101) 'LITE-ON ' 'LTR-52246S ' '6S0F' Removable CD-ROM
the second one works fine the first one only as root.
cdrecord: Operation not permitted. Cannot send SCSI cmd via ioctl
why? is this because the plextor supports some command that kernel does
not allow for non root users? (no messages in dmesg exept scsi: unknown
opcode 0xe9 )
or is cdrecord simply broken?
where should I fill a bug
kernel or cdrecord?
it was working fine on FC4 and it seems to work fine with growisofs (for
dvds)
now I am using FC5 x86_64 with kernel-2.6.16-1.2080_FC5 on a dual core
opteron box.

He, he, the message wasn't even sent from Evo. It was sent from IMP.
And detachment is due to the fact that I chose not the receive messages from the list. So, I just "fake" the replies (like this one I'm sending now from Evo :-)

Whoa! Attack of the mailing list police ;-)

ATI DRI
by Erwin Rol
Hey all,
Today i tried DRI on my ATI PCIe card, and it actually didn't hang my
machine, as it used to do. But glxgears exits with an error, which is
explained in the following bugzilla;
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6241
Since we are now having CVS versions of the ATI drivers, would it be
possible to get the fix from CVS, that is explained in the bugzilla,
into the rawhide RPM's ?

Fedora with laptops/networking/docking stations etc
by Peter Robinson
Hi All,
Been running FC5/rawhide for ages and absolutely love it but I have a
couple of queries wrt to various laptop support.
Firstly with NetworkManager do we still need to run the network
scripts. The reason I ask with my laptop at work I have wired, and
home wireless and as a result it takes ages to time out on alternate
interfaces and increases boot time greatly. Or can I run the network
script with the 2 interfaces disabled for boot time (so just
localhost) and let NM deal with what ever interface is up.
Similarly what's the status of docking stations support? With my Dell
Latitude when ever I undock then redock the wired network interface
(tg3) doesn't work and it takes a reboot to fix. I think its to do
with routing of the physical output to either the local port or dock
port. Same with suspending it within the dock.
Otherwise this is a rocking release. Well done!

Hi,
I am currently working on backup application which portable
On Linux, windows and MAC-Osx .
While taking the backup I want to exclude those files
Which are open.
In Linux lsof uses /proc/<pid>/fd directory to list
Open files.
Q. In windows how to check whether a file is already Open or not.
Is there any API for this checking or file property to check?
