Are you running NVIDIA driver? Do you have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?
FWIW, and for the archives, the nvidia kmod driver doesn't show the 'acorn
thingy' on boot, but a set of text-mode bars at the bottom of the screen, at least on
my F14 boxk, a Dell Precision M65 with an nVidia Quadro FX 350M. The OP said upthread:
"Firstly, trying to reboot, it shows the F14 blue screen with the acorn thingy in the
middle,....".
Secondly, do make sure that when you get a kernel update you also get the corresponding
kmod update for nvidia if you have an nvidia card. Otherwise you will get the blinking
cursor in the upper left corner.....and will need to reboot with an older kernel that
still has a kmod-nvidia installed.
