It seems they all charge like wounded bulls at sunset for contacting
standard phones.
I yum installed ekiga and then when I read they, AOL and others charge
by the minute for everything I yum removed 'cause it works out $5 for
same call that Telstra charges $2 for -- more expensive than Telstra.
Unless I read the info wrong?
I'd rather not use skype however.

Skype uses a proprietary system that isn't an open standard.
There are lots of H.323 and/or SIP clients available (e.g. Ekiga), that
can access services that do dialup and such and can offer phone numbers
for your computer. Try googling "voip clients +fedora" and "sip
clients +fedora"
