Hmmm, I've used claws for years, and haven't done this (I just use the
default black on white). And now I can't find a way to do it. A quick
search doesn't turn up anything.
A couple of possibilities.
In Configuration -> Preferences -> Display -> Colors -> Other,
it is possible to set the foreground and background colors for the
quote levels. I don't think this sets the ultimate background, but you
can display white text on black background.
Or in Configuration -> Preferences -> Display -> Themes, you could try
out other themes.
I haven't done either of these, but they hold out the most hope. Maybe
an expert will chime in here with the correct way to do this. And then
I *can* change the default layout. All that white is a little bright.

I have not used Claws-Mail for years, preferring sylpheed, but I believe that the
"correct" way to do this is through the gtk settings. I used to have exactly the
sort of foreground/background that Bob seems to want.
Best wishes,
Ranjan
