workstation spin
by Amadeus W.M.
Someone please enlighten me. What does the current workstation spin
actually have to do with work?
On a workstation one might want to do some development, C/C++, java, web,
python, latex, modeling, engineering, whatever. One might want to have at
least windows that come with minimization buttons already, to configure
our own shortcuts. I mean, really, do I have to get/enable extensions
just to get minimization/maximization buttons on my windows?
What comes with this spin instead? A desktop made for touch pads, with
all the social media and online cloud connectivity junk, bluetooth, etc.
I don't understand, is this how work is done these days?
Don't get me wrong, there are many good things that come with recent
versions of Fedora, many things that just work out of the box, and the
things that I need are readily installable and configurable. But then
don't call this a workstation spin. Call it a social media spin and, if I
may suggest, provide a real workstation spin.
I know this will be classified as a rant, and there will be those who say
"why don't you do it?". I don't mean to be negative, I just want to point
out the need for an actual workstation spin, in the hope that someone in
the steering committee would agree.

systemctl start service as non-root
by Edward Quick
Hi Fedora Users,
Does anyone know if it's possible to start a service using systemctl without root privileges?
For example, I've set up a tomcat instance, which starts up fine when issuing systemctl start with root:
[root@fedora22 tomcats]# systemctl start tomcat@instance1
[root@fedora22 tomcats]# ps -ef | grep java
tomcat 11056 1 46 09:44 ? 00:00:01 /usr/lib/jvm/jre/bin/java -classpath /usr/share/tomcat/bin/bootstrap.jar:/usr/share/tomcat/bin/tomcat-juli.jar:/usr/lib/java/commons-daemon.jar -Dcatalina.base=/var/lib/tomcats/instance1 -Dcatalina.home=/usr/share/tomcat -Djava.endorsed.dirs= -Djava.io.tmpdir=/var/cache/tomcat/temp -Djava.util.logging.config.file=/var/lib/tomcats/instance1/conf/logging.properties -Djava.util.logging.manager=org.apache.juli.ClassLoaderLogManager org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap start
But when trying to run the command as the tomcat user which owns the instance there's a message below I'm not sure about:
[root@fedora22 system]# sudo -u tomcat bash
bash-4.3$ id
uid=91(tomcat) gid=91(tomcat) groups=91(tomcat) context=unconfined_u:unconfined_r:unconfined_t:s0-s0:c0.c1023
bash-4.3$ systemctl start tomcat@instance1
Failed to start tomcat(a)instance1.service: The name org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1 was not provided by any .service files
bash-4.3$
Thanks for any help.

"Someone" might take a look at the Kubuntu install
by David Cary Hart
I have been experimenting with some virtual machines lately for bug
tracking. I am no fan of Ubuntu but the install of their KDE spin takes
less than half the time and it installs updated packages from their
repositories. The Fedora KDE spin results in a machine requiring (with
just base packages) a half-gig (package size) of updates.
Fedora is a superior distro. I am just saying that the Kubuntu install
is better than ours and might be worth replicating. By the way, I also
think it is better to walk through the disk and domain setup in contrast
to having the two action blocks which might be obvious to me - but not
to a new user migrating from Windows.
Were it up to me we would still have the package select option. It's the
same dnf bandwidth whether at install or after. But that doesn't seem to
be in the cards.

F22 and the RPI2B
by Bob Goodwin
I tried this yesterday on the ARM list and got no response. Perhaps
someone here has a suggestion?
I have Fedora-Xfce-armhfp-22-3-sda.raw installed on an SD card. It runs
to the initial installation screen and wants a password entered.
Unfortunately it doesn't recognize the keyboard and mouse inputs.
So, I should be able to SSH into it but again since I haven't created a
password:
[bobg@box10 ~]$ ssh -XC bobg(a)192.168.1.83
bobg(a)192.168.1.83's password:
Permission denied, please try again.
I found Googling:
/mnt/etc/sdcard/passwd To start without passwd remove "x" from the root
line as below:
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash > root::0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
I did that but it still wont let me in, just "try again."
What else can I try to work around this?
Any suggestion appreciated,
Bob

C/C++ Compiler Invalidly Turning Warnings into Errors?
by Stephen Morris
I have a driver for a wifi usb device that I need to compile because
there are no drivers in the kernel, which has been obtained from the
vendor of the device. When I attempt to compile the code the compile
fails on the grounds that some warnings are being translated into
errors. From my perspective these errors should not be happening
because, when a debugging module wants to time stamp the build, that is
not an error and is perfectly acceptable. How do I get the compiler to
stop producing these errors. The messages I get are listed below.
Authentication requested [root] for make driver:

dnf headaches.
by Derrik Walker v2.0
I seem to have some issues with dnf, and Dr Google isn't helping ...
So I installed the "Games and Entertainment," which did exactly nothing,
except mark it installed.
So, I figured out, that if I really want the games installed, I probably
should have:
# dnf group install with-optional "Games and Entertainment"
Cool except it tells me that "Games and Entertainment" is already
installed.
OK, so I'll just remove it and re-install it ... but is says NOPE!!!
# dnf group remove "Games and Entertainment"
Warning: Group 'Games and Entertainment' does not exist.
...
So, now I can't install it properly, or uninstall it.
And the versions I have installed:
# rpm -qa | grep ^dnf
dnf-1.0.0-1.fc22.noarch
dnf-plugins-core-0.1.8-1.fc22.noarch
dnf-langpacks-0.10.0-1.fc22.noarch
dnf-yum-1.0.0-1.fc22.noarch
dnf-conf-1.0.0-1.fc22.noarch
Not sure if It's a bug, or if I overlooked something in the
documentation. But my kid want's his games!
Thanks.

dnf nonlocal update
by Robert Dady
Hi,
I have 2 computers: "A" has F22 and 3G cell phone Internet connection with
a limited data plan, "B" has Windows7 / Ubuntu 15.04 / F22 Live and
broadband Internet connection.
I want "A" make a (dnf) list of packages of available updates, which I
could download on "B" and install them offline on "A" from a USB stick.
Is it feasible?
Best regards,
Robert
