failed yum update, new kernel won't boot
by Fred Smith
Hi all!
something went awry during a yum update a little whuile ago. It's
my netbook, still on F19 (yes, I know it's now officially EOL, it
should get an upgrade Real Soon Now, I'm just trying to make-do
for a little while).
So, I did a "yum update", and it found a bazillion packages to update,
including kernel, to (I think it was) 3.14.27-100, and somewhere during
the update process everything hung hard. mouse moved, but that was about
all. hidden panels wouldn't un-hide, clicking on any window or icon
didn't do anaything, I could not grab and drag or resize any windows,
right-click desktop did nothing, CTRL-ALT-F2 (or F3 or...) did nothing. no
disk activity that showed on the little blue LED.
So after a while I tried CTRL-ALT-BKSP which is enabled, and nothing
happened. CTRL-ALT-DEL didn't do anything either. so I eventually
gave up and used the Big Red Switch. So it rebooted and hung with
some sort of kernel panic dump on the screen before I got the passphrase
prompt for the encrypted HD. sigh. frobbed the Big Red Switch again,
chose previous kernel and it comes right up.
I did yum-complete-transaction and it appeared to finish up the
failed bits.
but the new kernel still panics on boot.
I tried "yum reinstall" for all the kernel bits of the latest (non-
working) kernel, and it said "not available" for all but (I think
it was) headers. What does "not available" mean here? I mean, it had
just downloaded for installation a little while before, they've
disappeared in the meantime?
Sigh. I'm open to suggestions here, thanks in advance.
Fred

swapping the disk, with the operating system, using a clone made with CLONEZILLA
by Angelo Moreschini
Hi,
I already used successfully clonezilla to backup my OS (fedora).
I did this (only for exercise til now) *restoring the OS on the original
disk from which I had **take** the clone*.
Now I wanted to use my clone to restore fedora on a virgin HD. (for
security reasons, I did not want restore the clone on the disk with the OS
which I use currently).
In this case, however, the operation failed.
That is why, I ask if *restor**ing** of a clone (made with clonezilla) can
be carried out, in general, on a**ny* *(**v**i**rg**i**n**) HD**.*
I would like to get an answer to this question.
Thank You
Regards
Angelo

do I need tuned running?
by SternData
I was looking at the update notice on the announce list and saw that the
tuned description says " Currently only ethernet
network and ATA harddisk devices are implemented."
As I have a SATA disk and a WiFi connection, is there any benefit from
running tuned?

Two independent SSHD processes?
by CLOSE Dave
I'd like to run two SSH daemons on the same machine. They will listen on
different ports and have other differences in their configuration. I
want these two daemons to be independent of each other: either can run
while the other is stopped. I need to do this for recent (systemd)
machines and for older ones (SysV).
I'm finding that, although the SSH daemon records its PID in a file,
that file is not configurable. Consequently, it seems that stopping one
of the daemons causes the other to also stop. Same for starting one.
Here is the procedure I'm using to setup the second daemon on SysV. (The
first one is the standard daemon normally running. I haven't tried yet
on systemd.)
cd /usr/sbin; ln -s sshd xsshd
cd /etc/pam.d; ln -s sshd xsshd
cp /etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd /etc/rc.d/init.d/xsshd
# edit /etc/rc.d/init.d/xsshd to reference a different config file
# and the new program name, xsshd
chkconfig --add xsshd
I realize that I might be able to workaround these difficulties, or some
of them, by revising the standard system control files. I'd like to
avoid doing that and just fit within the Fedora framework. Is that
likely to be possible?

Removing obsolete selinux setup
by Pete Stieber
I have a machine that has dokuwiki loaded. In order to get it to work
with selinux, I followed some advice that was on:
https://www.dokuwiki.org/install:fedora
to allow apache to edit some files:
semanage fcontext -a -t httpd_mediawiki_rw_content_t '/etc/dokuwiki'
restorecon -v '/etc/dokuwiki'
semanage fcontext -a -t httpd_mediawiki_rw_content_t
'/etc/dokuwiki/users.auth.php'
restorecon -v '/etc/dokuwiki/users.auth.php'
semanage fcontext -a -t httpd_mediawiki_rw_content_t
'/etc/dokuwiki/local.php'
restorecon -v '/etc/dokuwiki/local.php'
This worked on 19 and 20, but when I upgraded the machine to Fedora 21
and the httpd_mediawiki_rw_content_t no longer exists. I tried
semanage fcontext -d -t httpd_mediawiki_rw_content_t '/etc/dokuwiki'
but I get complaints about the media wiki context being invalid.
How do I remove these obsolete entries from the selinux database?

Fedora-21 firewall advice?
by Timothy Murphy
Am I right in thinking that there are two entirely different
versions of firewall in Fedora-21? I've been looking at
<https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FirewallD#Dynamic_firewall_with_FirewallD>
and it seems I have to choose between systemd (dynamic) firewall
and iptables (static) firewall?
I'm presently using shorewall with iptables.
Can shorewall be used with firewalld?
I'm surprised that I have never seen an article starting
"In Fedora 21 you will have to choose between firewalld and iptables."
Or have I completely misunderstood the situation?

special chars in gedit?
by Dave Stevens
I need to use my notebook keyboard to insert a divide symbol, the kind
with two dots and a horizontal line, it's ascii character 43 decimal.
I installed gedit-plugins and character table is enabled in
preferences but I don't see anywhere in the gedit screen to get into
the table to select characters. Ideas?

Fedora 21 wrong IP address when using "Automatic" (DHCP)
by CS DBA
Hi All;
I have a laptop with a new Fedora 21 install, Our firewall is set to
serve up (DHCP) addresses from 192.168.2.100 - 192.168.2.250
When I activate the physical internet (enp0s25) I get an address of
192.168.0.100
this I cannot connect to any other servers due to the subnet difference.
I checked the settings and the "Method" in the KDE edit connections
(KnetworkManager) is set to "Automatic"
Thanks in advance...
