Fwd: transcoding mp3 to wav
by JD
I first sent it to the ffmpeg users mailing list, but unfortunately, my
experience with that
mailing list is that most of the time, no one replies :)
So, I am forwarding to this ML .
-------- Forwarded Message --------
Hi, I tried to transcode a few mp3 files to wav using the command
for f in *.mp3; do
ffmpeg -i "$f" -ab 1600k -y ${f%mp3}wav
done
it does the conversion, but does not honour the bitrate param.
How do I force the bitrate param for the ourput?

F21 - Refreshing DNCP lease on ethernet
by Robert Moskowitz
I am using ethernet to connect to a firewall I am configuring. My
initial connection did not have any dhcp config info (because I had not
configured the server) like DNS servers and the like. I have since
configed the firewall, but cannot get this information to my system. I
tried:
ifdown p6p1; ifup p6p1
And that did not refresh the dhcp information. I deleted the lease on
the firewall and bounced the ethernet with no changes. /etc/resolv still
does not have my DNS server addresses.
With WiFi, I would have turned off the radio, turned it back on,
connected to my SSID and (normally) gotten the new lease info.
BTW, this is a F21/Gnome setup (have not found the time to upgrade this
notebook to F22...)

Setting up caching nameserver on f21
by David Mehler
Hello,
I'm trying to set up a caching nameserver on f21. No success, but
googling shows items pre-system and not working on my setup. I've got
my isp's upstream dns servers but I'd like to query my localhost
caching nameserver first.
Thanks.
Dave.

Best experience for high resolution touch screen laptop?
by Benjamin Smith
I'm a long time Fedora/KDE fan (since KDE 1.x days) and am just getting
familiar with my new Dell Precision M3800, and am experiencing a few issues.
1) You can go "too much resolution", especially when used in conjunction with
external displays. Default is 3200x1800 which isn't bad when I increase font
and icon size, but then it looks garish on a "normal" resolution (1080)
external monitor. Until I upgrade my other displays, I'd like to underdrive my
screen to 1680x1080 but that resolution doesn't show on the KDE display
settings dropdown - anything under max res is in 4:3 resolutions. EG:
1600x1200, etc.
How would I "assert" 1680x1050? I see this resolution when booted into Windows
so I know the hardware supports it. (This is the first time in several years
that Fedora/KDE hasn't "just worked")
2) KDE with Fedora 21 doesn't seem to multitouch. Is there a way to enable
this capability? Also, when using multiple screens, the touch goes to the
wrong screen! (when I touch the touch screen and the mouse appears on the
external display)
Is Gnome significantly ahead of KDE in this respect?
I've posted the output:

http://hal.schoolpathways.com/ben/xrandr.txt
http://hal.schoolpathways.com/ben/lspci.txt

Thanks,
Ben

Blank laptop screen after disconnecting projector
by CS DBA
All;
I recently installed Fedora21 (KDE Spin) on a new Dell M3800
Everything was working beautifully, one of the things I do on a regular
basis is to rsync my hard drive (skipping the directories created at
runtime) to a backup location
I have been connecting & disconnection the laptop to/from 2 separate
monitors via the mini display port & a mini display port to vga adapter
with no issues.
earlier tonite I did a presentation to a local users group meeting, all
went fine, I plugged their projector into the mini display port and the
presentation worked fine.
However when I unplugged the projector mu laptop screen went blank, I
rebooted and logged into a blank screen, after a reboot I could plug the
projector in again and get dual screens (laptop and projector screen),
If I unplugged the projector I get a blank screen on the laptop again.
I restored a full backup rebooted, same problem... I'm now doing a full
re-install of Fedora 21. I'd like to avoid this in the future, any help
would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

trying to install kvm
by Hiisi
Hi!
Need some help here installing kvm. I'm following instructions at [1].
Seems that my system does not support hardware virtualization.
$ egrep '^flags.*(vmx|svm)' /proc/cpuinfo
Command above reveals nothing. Anyway, I would like to use it for android
x86 emulator only.
All necessary packages are installed. However trying to start libvirtd
reveals:
$ systemctl -l status libvirtd

Monitor madness
by John Morris
Ok, I'm helping convert an XP user. I'm doing it long distance though.
Testing with live images hasn't went well but have narrowed the problem
down a bit. It is the video setup that is going Boom!
Guy has an older ATI RV370 with a 32inch TV on the DVI port (via HDMI
converter) and a 1600x1200 4:3 monitor on the VGA port. Booting the
Fedora 21 media goes boom, junk on the displays. CTRL-ALT-F2 will get a
text console though, which is kinda curious.
Ok, try disconnecting a monitor and the VGA display is fine on XFCE or
MATE. With XFCE the TV can be reconnected and it will mirror. I know
XFCE used to be able to configure a dual display but didn't want to do
it now. Mate on the other hand just dies when the TV is reconnected,
yielding the same random gibberish on both screens that booting with
both does with no obvious way to recover.
So I guess step one is make both displays work. Step two of course is to
get them to both work without hot plugging as that would get old real
quick. If autodetection could be nuked it might be a start. Or
figuring out what is different between XFCE booting with both and
hotplugging. I'd guess the root of the problem is the DVI port is being
picked as Primary if it is present at startup. Never heard of a boot
switch to change it though. Haven't manually configured X in a few
years, haven't needed to. Just not sure what this unusual situation
calls for.
One last datapoint. Threw more distros at it. A SystemRescueCD disc
brings up a graphical desktop without a problem, saw the VGA as primary.
Ubuntu fails pretty much the same as Fedora.
