Strange error message
by Roger
I update my Fedora 19 every morning.
Booting up over the last 3 weeks pops up a peculiar error message:
Software update failed to complete
The dialog says:
Failed To Update
the off line update failed in an unexpected way
Detailed errors from PackageManager follow:
The transaction did not complete.
/var/log/messages shows nothing of note.
/var/log/boot.log has one error: [FAILED] Failed to start Wait for
Plymouth Boot Screen to Quit.
See 'systemctl status plymouth-quit-wait.service' for details.
systemctl status plymouth-quit-wait.service
plymouth-quit-wait.service - Wait for Plymouth Boot Screen to Quit
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/plymouth-quit-wait.service;
disabled)
Active: failed (Result: timeout) since Sun 2013-10-13 10:13:19 EST;
43min ago
Main PID: 544
CGroup: name=systemd:/system/plymouth-quit-wait.service
I have run yum clean all.
How can I determine which update failed and what to do about it.
Thanks

Bill Oliver's essay on "just follow instructions".
by Rolf Turner
I am referring to Bill Oliver's essay that appeared under the "Fedora =
"the darker
side of the Internet?"" thread, just recently.
I just wanted to say how wonderfully well-expressed this essay was. It
is widely
applicable and should be required reading for "gurus" in ever-so-many areas.
(There are many contributors to the R-help mailing list to which I subscribe
who would benefit from taking this essay to heart.)
I hope that Harald Reindl reads it and takes it to heart. I have no
patience
with those on this list who slang off at Harald. He is a brilliant guy
and provides
a great service to the Fedora community. But he would be even more
useful to
the community if he absorbed Bill Oliver's advice.
cheers,
Rolf Turner

oolatex
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
I installed OOolatex on my fedora 19 i686 but the equation edition
fails (from libreoffice):
BASIC runtime error.
Property or method not found: getDocumentInfo.
I tried to contact: Geoffroy Piroux (gpiroux(a)gmail.com)
But I did not get any response.
So I have been on the website:
http://ooolatex.sourceforge.net/
where the rpm is supposed to come from, and tried to download the
package, but there is not tar or any sort of package here (only fonts).
Thus, is OOoLatex any more maintained?
If no, what is going to replace it
Thank for your help.
Regards.

f19netinst boots but no X-windows, only black text screen
by Jackson Byers
OCT10 2013 finally got my f19netinst booting!
This used the .iso in:
menuentry 'Fedora 19 netinst' {
linux /vmlinuz-install stage2=hd:/dev/sda9:root/Fedora-19-i386-netinst.iso
initrd /initrd.img-install
}
BUT no X-windows yet.
I am still stuck in that black text-only screen
and I don't knw how to proceed.
I also had/have difficulty in accesing the ctrl-alt-F2 which
seems to be necessary to login.
I often had to hit power button and reboot to be able to login.
so far all I have done is explore what has been installed
by using
"yum list installed"
or "yum list installed |grep -i xorg" for example
/tmp is missing .X0-loc
there many xorg, many chrome.
Assuming I can get get X-windows going I would like to switch to xfce.
My experience on installing new fedora versions
is limitad to:
1)hard disk install using the dvd.iso, and using repo=
2)preupgrade
neither of which left me in text mode,
so I don't have any idea how to proceed here.
Any help much appreciated

new acer, no mouse?
by Richard Vickery
Hi Gang,
The new computer just arrived (FINALLY!!!! after about 4 weeks) installed
Linpus, without X, or X didn't boot up straight away - instead it booted
root. I rewrote the hard drive with our software and when getting up with
the recognisable Fedora 9 GUI I find that the mouse-pad doesn't work. Can
one of you fine people please let me know the keyboard combinations to get
into the system settings?
Wait! I can get there with a command, can't I? but how do I get there in
the GUI?
Thanks for the help.

update errors
by Frank McCormick
Updated my 19 installation this morning and ran into errors again.
This is from yum's log:
Oct 11 09:42:09 Updated: gnupg2-2.0.22-1.fc19.i686
Oct 11 09:42:10 Updated: usbmuxd-1.0.8-10.fc19.i686

Oct 11 09:42:11 Updated: libtar-1.2.11-26.fc19.i686
Oct 11 09:42:25 psacct-6.6.1-6.fc19.i686: ts_done name in te is usbmuxd
should be psacct-6.6.1-6.fc19.i686
Oct 11 09:42:27 kernel-headers-3.11.3-201.fc19.i686: ts_done name in te
is psacct should be kernel-headers-3.11.3-201.fc19.i686
Oct 11 09:42:28 libtar-1.2.11-25.fc19.i686: ts_done name in te is
kernel-headers should be libtar-1.2.11-25.fc19.i686
Then i checked rpm :
[root@localhost log]# rpm -qa | grep usbmuxd
usbmuxd-1.0.8-10.fc19.i686
usbmuxd-1.0.8-9.fc19.i686
[root@localhost log]#
I can remove rpms reference to the old usbmuxd as I encountered
similar problems a week or two ago.
Are these packaging problems or what ?
Thanks

Sometimes I need to kill java
by Frank Murphy
F20 but general question.
I test both upstream and Fedora Azureus (Vuze)
use openjdk for both.
I created an azvuze.service
to automate restarts (during the night)
Sometimes openjdk stays, sometimes crashes out.
If it stays, it prevents restart.
by either service file, manually typing # azureus.
How can I automate "killall -SIGHUP java",
only when azureus || vuze is refusing to start with:
journalctl | grep azureus
StartSocket: passing startup args to already-running Azureus java
process listening on [127.0.0.1: NNNN]
azureus[2297]: StartServer ERROR: unable to bind to 127.0.0.1:NNNN
listening for passed torrent info: Address already in use
Both fedora-azureus and upstream-vuze
are similar but for paths
azvuze.service ============
# restart azureus
#
[Unit]
Description=Vuze (Upstream)
DefaultDependencies=no
Requires=lightdm.service
After=graphical.target
[Service]
User=makeyup
Type=forking
Restart=always
RestartSec=180
RemainAfterExit=no
TimeoutStartSec=0
Environment=DISPLAY=:0
# ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/killall -SIGHUP java ## not a good idea here.
ExecStartPre=/usr/local/scripts/ulimit
ExecStart=/home/makeyup/Upstream_Vuze/azureus
[Install]
WantedBy=graphical.target

please excuse the "Subject: [OT] Doctor Who tv series".
my reason for posting is that besides 1 "recluse poster", ;=) ,
