rant: cifs utterly screwed in fedora 18
by Tom Horsley
smbd[20596]: WARNING: Ignoring invalid value 'SHARE' for parameter 'security'
This is unacceptably stupid. The guys with the tinfoil hats
who think that connecting a computer to AC power is insecure
have obviously taken over.
It is now utterly impossible to provide a windows share
from a linux box that can be connected without the
windows side asking for credentials.
Nevermind that the entire LAN is isolated behind a
firewall. Nevermind that all users inside that firewall
are trusted and will be pissed off that they constantly
have to provide credentials for no reason. Nevermind
that there is nothing in the shared directory but
things like copies of holiday snapshots. Oh no!
The security geeks need to make sure I'm protected
from myself. Just because it is my computer, my LAN,
and my data is no reason I get to decide how I want
to use it. I'm too ignorant for that.
Now, please use this rant as motivation to prove I'm
wrong by posting a tested, working, smb.conf file that
provides a read/write windows file share which requires
no credentials prompt on the windows box. (Merely
mentioning things you've heard ought to work isn't
useful - I've tried them all - I need a working tested
example).
Sheesh!

rsync (ssh) authorisation weirdness on F18
by Bill Murray
Dear Fedora enthusiasts,
I have been doing backup of my system using a custom
pair of scripts. One sits
in ./NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/ and looks at new network connections.
If it sees one
machine some criteria it calls a backup script in /etc/cron.daily/ which
rsyncs various
directories between my laptop and a desktop machine. This worked will in
F17 and many
previous versions.
In F18 the rsync command fails to connect:
dbus-daemon[938]: Could not create directory '/root/.ssh'.
dbus-daemon[938]: Host key verification failed.
If I run either of the scripts as root interactively then they work. But not
when NetworkManager tries to run them. Any idea what might be wrong?
Both end already have /root/.ssh, so this error confuses me.
Thanks!
Bill

F18 autofs issue

If I remove the sec=netlmv2 I get complaints and the error code is a -13

Jan 29 13:59:30 voyager kernel: [22704.118387] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -13
In either case, the cd command itself returns no such file or directory.
Also interestingly enough root can mount this directory without an issue with the correct credentials.
Something is missing in autofs I believe.

HelluvaProblem
by Roger
I have the latest updates of Fedora 18
Today I installed http, php, pear, mysql, etc installed drupal 7.19
All went well.
Golly I've done this over and over for years and not experience this
problem.
When drupal install finished it went to the admin page, all good, but
when I try to do anything I get "the Connection was reset" error.
I logged out and now it will not find 127.0.0.1/test which is the drupal
installation
However if I 127.0.0.1/test/install.php it shows a drupal admin page
reporting the Drupal is already installed. Click on "View exisitng site"
and I get "the connection was reset" error.
I have checked /etc/php.ini, checked /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf.
localhost dieplays teh apache page and an index.html page.
Also displays phpinfo.php.
I can browse the internet and can play youtube tutorials. So it seems to
be apache resetting something, but I do not know.
I did notice that selinux borked at times and suggested fixes.
I have done this process in Fedora 14 and 16 so saw no problem with
doing the same in Fedora 18.
grep plugin-container /var/log/audit/audit.log | audit2allow -M mypol
semodule -i mypol.pp
have restarted apache.

Why a segmentation fault?
/var/log/httpd/access_log shows access to Drupal modules.
Been at this for hours and I have run out of ideas so I'm really
hoping someone can tell me what is wrong, where I should look, or better
still how to resolve it.

WIFI broken after kernel RPM update
by Gary Stainburn
Last week as my DELL Vostro 1510 updated RPM's as normal. In these updates
there must have been a kernel update. Since then WIFI has stopped working.
If I manually select the previous kernel the WIFI resumes working but with the
newer one it doesn't.
I could remove the newer kernel to fix this short term but the next set of RPM
updates will only re-apply the update.
Other than waiting for another kernel which is hopefully fixed, what options
do I have?
The kernel that doesn't work is
3.6.11-5.fc17.x86_64
The kernel that does work is
3.6.11-1.fc17.x86_64
The WIFI on the Vostro has always been a pain with some Fedora releases
working out of the box and others, as with this Fedora 17 I have to manually
install broadcom-wl and kmod-wl
