Missing Functionality in New Anaconda
by Dave Cross
I think that the new Anaconda is missing some functionality that was
previously available. If it's not missing, then it's really well
hidden and I'd appreciate some help tracking it down.
As I mentioned in a previous email, FedUp hasn't worked on my laptop
for reasons that I don't really understand. So I decided to go to Plan
B which is an approach that I've used for many previous Fedora
upgrades.
I have a separate /home partition which contains all of my important
data. Therefore I want to do a new installation of Fedora 18 but reuse
the existing /home partition. In the old Anaconda that was simple. I'd
just use set up a customised partition layout, telling it to reuse the
/home partition and to do what it wanted with the rest of the disk.
But I can't work out how to do that on the new version of Anaconda.
The new partitioning sets up this artificial distinction between the
old Fedora 17 installation and the new Fedora 18 one and I can't see
how to tell the new installation to use a partition from the old one.
I accept that this probably isn't a really common use case, but it
seems a shame to lose functionality that some of your users are using.
If I'm being stupid and missing an obvious way to this, then can
someone please put me out of my misery and tell me what to do.
Thanks,
Dave...
p.s. It seems I'm not the only person trying (and failing) to use this
approach - http://mocktech.com/blog/2013/01/fedora-18-update-beginning-to-damage-my-...

F18: Postgresql 9.2.x/PostGIS 1.5.x issues
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
I've done a fresh install on a Dell Latitude D630 laptop.
Until now, most issues have been minor.
I'm moving a large amount of Postgresql/PostGIS data from an older Dell
Inspiron 600m laptop.
I've run:
- postgresql-setup initdb
- systemctl start postgresql.service
- su - postgres
and there proceed to run several items bundled into a shell script, which
reads as follows (don't know how to control line wrapping here):
#!/usr/bin/env bash
POSTGIS_SQL_PATH=`pg_config --sharedir`/contrib
createdb -E UTF8 template_postgis # Create the template spatial database.
createlang -d template_postgis plpgsql # Adding PLPGSQL language support.
psql -d postgres -c "UPDATE pg_database SET datistemplate='true' WHERE
datname='template_postgis';"
psql -d template_postgis -f $POSTGIS_SQL_PATH/postgis-64-2.sql # Loading
the PostGIS SQL routines
psql -d template_postgis -f $POSTGIS_SQL_PATH/spatial_ref_sys.sql
psql -d template_postgis -c "GRANT ALL ON geometry_columns TO PUBLIC;" #
Enabling users to alter spatial tables.
psql -d template_postgis -c "GRANT ALL ON geography_columns TO PUBLIC;"
psql -d template_postgis -c "GRANT ALL ON spatial_ref_sys TO PUBLIC;"
#########
The first problem was running
psql -d template_postgis -f $POSTGIS_SQL_PATH/postgis-64-2.sql
It gave me:
UPDATE 1
SET
BEGIN
psql:/usr/share/pgsql/contrib/postgis-64.sql:59: ERROR: language "C" does
not exist
psql:/usr/share/pgsql/contrib/postgis-64.sql:65: ERROR: current
transaction is aborted, commands ignored until end of transaction block
Now things are case-sensitive; globally replacing "LANGUAGE 'C'" with a
lower-case 'c' fixes that.
Next problem:
UPDATE 1
SET
BEGIN
psql:/usr/share/pgsql/contrib/postgis-64-2.sql:59: ERROR: incompatible
library "/usr/lib64/pgsql/postgis-1.5.so": version mismatch
DETAIL: Server is version 9.2, library is version 9.1.
Now, I'm stumped. F18 ships w/ postgresql-9.2.2-1.fc18.x86_64 and
postgis-1.5.3-4.fc18.x86_64.
I'd think that the two would jive, no?
Any advice in this regard would be appreciated.
Thanks.

p.s. If I restore non-spatialized databases, those work correctly.

color ssh/sftp -
by Bob Goodwin
Is there a scheme for changing terminal background color
automatically for ssh? It would be convenient to have a warning that
I was typing a command into other than this computer. I try to keep
track of where I am but don't always which can lead to confusion or
worse.

KMail trash folder?
by Alan Evans
In KMail (F17), where is the "Trash" folder? If I select a message and then
click the "Move to Trash" button, where is the message moved to? How do I
recover accidentally deleted messages?
On the sidebar, there is only "inbox," "outbox," and "sent-mail" listed
under Local Folders.

How to set up a hotspot with networkmanager in F18
by wheelz

f18: nautilus: how to re-enable tree view in "view item as a list" and some other function.
by Dario Lesca
Nautilus 3.6.x ...
The [+] to the left of the folders in "view item as a list" mode is
gone....
The total disk free space in bottom status bar, when click on blank
zone, is gone....
The function menu is gone (to top left, yes, but not when the focus is
on the other windows)...
The button "up to the previous folder" (cd ..) is gone...
How to re-enable this useful function/feature, like previous version
(nautilus 3.4) or Caja do ?
For now, I have disable the use of nautilus and install
caja-file-manager-*, but this is only a work around...
Many thanks.

Boot Fedora 18 from LiveCD ISO file
by Sergio Belkin
Hi Fedora community,
I'm trying to avoid burning LiveCD iso file and boot from it.
I've added an entry to /etc/grub.d/40_custom :
#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
# This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type
the
# menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change
# the 'exec tail' line above.
menuentry "Fedora 18 LiveCD (Fedora-18-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso)" {
insmod part_msdos
insmod lvm
insmod ext2
set root='lvm/vg_sebelk-root'
if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root
--hint='lvm/vg_sebelk-root' eacc51f3-68a3-4839-88b0-7c1fc3531739
else
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root
eacc51f3-68a3-4839-88b0-7c1fc3531739
fi
loopback loop "/boot/fedora-isos/Fedora-18-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso"
set root=(loop)
linux (loop)/isolinux/vmlinuz0
root=live:LABEL=Fedora-18-x86_64-Live-Desktop.is ro rd.live.image rd.shell
rd.debug
initrd (loop)/isolinux/initrd0.img
}
EOF
But it fails, it says something like
/dev/disk/by-label/Fedora-18-x86_64-Live-Desktop.is does not exist
/dev/mapper/live-rw does not exist
I haven't figured it out how to wirte the root option. Please could you
help me?
Thanks in advance!

Do people still install from CDs ?
by Timothy Murphy
Do most people install Fedora from CDs?
This seem to be the default in all the Fedora-18 documentation I have seen.
I would have thought installation from USB stick was more popular now.
I have a couple of computers with no CD reader;
isn't that becoming the norm?
