XFCE keyboard and windowing functionality loss
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
Today, suddenly certain keyboard and windowing functionality stopped.
No longer can I cycle through windows on a desktop by using Alt-Tab. Also,
the windowing capabilities - maximize/minimize a window disappeared. There
are a few other similar abnormalities.
I thought that this may have been due to some sort of a software update;
but I haven't done any in the last few days.
I know that there is an oddity/bug in XFCE that the keyboard stops
functioning if you hold down one of the shift keys for too long.
But this seems to be something very differt.
If anyone has experienced this problem and resolved it, please share your
solution.
Otherwise, it's into the Gnome 3 world.

Question about Preferred Applications
by Joe Zeff
My sister uses Linux, and has Thunderbird installed. However, her
primary email address is at gmail. She'd like to be able to click on
mailto: links and have gmail come up instead of Thunderbird. AFAICT,
there's no obvious way to do it. Does anybody out there know how that
could be automated? (My sister isn't technically oriented; something
that takes several steps every time probably won't work. However, I can
either set it up for her or talk her through doing it, as long as the
end result is easy for her to use.)

F17, Firefox won't play flash videos.
Firefox-14.0.1
flashplayer-plugin-11.2 r202
libflashplayer.so link is in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.
What is the RPM command to determine what dependencies Firefox and
flashplayer-plugin uses .

The list, as a whole, isn't moderated.

i am only using reply-all because moderated and it takes

"Fn" sounds like a notebook
on many notebook-keaboards you need to press "Fn+Print" fro the
print-key itself, so you need "CTRL+ALT+Fn+Print+S" for emergency sync

nut startup driving me nuts...
by Chuck Peters
Configured nut as I have with Ubuntu, same machine, and enabled startup on
F17... So why isn't it starting?
[root@fedora tmp]# systemctl enable nut-server.service
ln -s '/usr/lib/systemd/system/nut-server.service'
'/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/nut-server.service'
Reboot and test if I can read info from the UPS.
[root@fedora cp]# upsc fedoraups@localhost

Manually start things and test again:

Seeking Suggestions w/ Syncing HTC Android phone w/ Fedora Desktop
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
Per the subject line, I have recently acquired an HTC EVO Design 4G
(running Android 4.0x), having had a Palm Centro for the prior three years.
With the Centro, the syncing was straightforward: I used j-pilot,
installed from rpms.
I've exported my contacts/addressbook using j-pilot, and have managed to
load them into the HTC addressbook.
The initial transfers of the addressbook missed certain fields. So, I had
to edit the following VCARD fields:
Change VERSION VERSION:3.0 VERSION:2.1
Change ADDR;TYPE=HOME: ADR;HOME:
Change ADDR;TYPE=WORK:/ADR;WORK:
Change TEL;TYPE=email: to EMAIL;INTERNET:
Change TEL;TYPE=email,pref: to EMAIL;PREF;INTERNET:
Change ADDR: to ADR;OTHER:
Once done, all of the existing data was transferred. Unfortunately, I
wasn't able to transfer categories. (I opened the file in vi and did
search-and-replaces).
Now, the issue is to find the desktop app with which to sync the phone.
At this point, I'm all eyes-and-ears accetping advice from the fello
Fedora Users community.
You there, in the back row ...
Thanks.

hp k80xi hplip fedora 17
by Nate Pearlstein
Anyone have this combination working?
Fedora complains that it cannot communicate with the device.
My user is part of the sys and lp group, selinux is in permissive mode.
If I manually enter the ub bus and id in hp-setup it can see enough to
create the queues but still says it can't communicate with the printer.
The printer works fine with opensuse 12.1. Yes I know I can ask for
help at hplipopensource.com. I tried the fedora 17 packages and
building from hplipopensource.com, same rev 3.12.6.
I tried with usblp blacklisted, not the default, and the default, using
usblp.

Login problem after installing F 17
by Andrew McLean
I have been using Fedora 17 for some months with few problems. My PC has
an Nvidia GPU, and I have used both the Nouveau and Nvidia drivers at
different times.
I just reinstalled from the DVD (because of a problem not relevant to
this specific issue, I believe).
When running as Live User from the DVD, the display is OK.
After installation, I get the login screen as expected. At this point
there is a Menu bar at the top of the window.
After I login with my password, the screen changes to the usual mottled
green background, but there is no Menu bar. Before I reinstalled, the
Menu bar was present and I could use the system as normal.
How can I do anything without a Menu bar ? What might cause this
problem ? I have reinstalled again and get the same result. I did notice
an error message to do with the Noveau driver, but can't access the
details without rebooting into text mode by tweaking Grub. But could a
Nouveau problem cause this behaviour ?
What else can I try ?
TIA

Another Question....
by EGO-II.1
Ok so here's another issue I've recently come across, wonder if anyone
has info on this: I have a Gateway T6321 laptop and it's running my
Fedora 17 just fine, I recently noticed my BIOS for this laptop was
OLD...(1998! I think!) and I was wondering how do I go about installing
the BIOS update from the Gateway site? It's a zip file but I don't know
where to unzip it to!...help!
