Re: Unable To Update.....
by EGO-II.1
Well I'm ALMOST sure my acct is root....I don't remember creating a different username/acct when I first installed Fedora. And when I install software and I get prompted for a password....the same one that logs me in also gets me past authentication.....bit there have been times when I'm in terminal....where I'm not permitted to do something...and the response I get is the system telling me that I need to "be" root.....so I dunno....how can I be a root acct when I have no permissions...?

You've successfully weirded your system. Doing what you did is like walking around with a loaded gun in your hand, with the safety off, and your finger on the trigger.
Don't know why you can't delete those files if your user is truly root.
You could always boot a Fedora DVD and go into "rescue" mode and delete files from there.
If I were in your shoes I would forget about clamav and just backup all data and install F17 from scratch. And when you install clamav, I'd do it from the Fedora repos and not download and compile from source like I think you were doing.

F17 GNOME 3 dual monitor problem
by Paul Erickson
I have installed F17 on an A7V8X-X with an Athlon 2500 cpu with 2.5Gb of
memory with a
Quadro NVS 280 64MB AGP8X video card. Installation went fine and I was
able to add enough
extensions to GNOME 3 to make it usable, but when I add a second
monitor, I get a
"GNOME 3 failed to start" starting in fall back mode. The monitors are
identical Samsung
SyncMaster 740N's. A web search reveals that others are having problems
with dual monitors,
but so far I have seen no solutions.
Anyone found a solution for this?
cheers, Paul

It is frequently the case that even a successful defense against a patent lawsuit costs more than licensing a bogus patent.
Furthermore, there is a non-zero probability of losing said lawsuit, with costs that would significantly exceed the costs of a license.
So if w is the cost of a license
p is the probability of losing a lawsuit
z is the probability of a lawsuit even being filed
x is the cost of defending the lawsuit and winning
and y is the cost of defending the lawsuit and losing
if
w < z(py + (1-p)x)
w < z(p(y-x) + x)
Then it makes sense to just settle. Some firms may make a more conservative estimation of p than others. Some firms believe that y and x are quite close, and much larger than w - which means the probability of winning or losing doesn't really matter. Some firms assume z is 1 - a lawsuit is inevitable.

mysqld: Query cache disabled?
by Richard Shaw
I was using mysqltuner perl script on my mythtv machine and it's
telling me that "Query cache is disabled" and that "Thread cache is
disabled" even though I think I have the relevant options set in
my.cnf:
# mysqltuner script tuning options
skip-external-locking
query_cache_type=1
query_cache_limit=3M
query_cache_size=32M
join_buffer_size=512.0K
tmp_table_size=32M
max_heap_table_size=32M
thread_cache_size=8
table_cache=256
key_buffer_size=64M
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Unable To Update.....
by EGO-II.1
I'm currently finding it difficult to upgrade my Fedora 16 laptop. I
have tried being selective and choosing just one or two of the updates
in the he updates list, hoping that after they went through I'd be able
to do the rest but to no avail. I would like to submit a photo of the
actual updates, but I think I remember reading that it's not allowed on
this mailing list. SO I have just copied the names of the updates, and
the error message I get when it fails. Hopefully someone can help me out
with this!?

Weird Happenings.....
by EGO-II.1
Ok so I've been using F16 for quite a while now, and I decided that it
was time to get "serious" about securing my system, well aftger browsing
the web and reading up on it. I decided to download clamav.....now
here's where things get weird, after downloading the clam "tar.gz" file,
my laptop started acting funny. Mind you this is WITHOUT installing the
actual clamav file. And now I have lost the use of my touchpad, or to be
more precise it has started to act flaky, in that it seems that it will
switch from the "Right-Handed" mode to Left-Handed. or sometimes it
won't work at all. Is there a cure for this? Because this is just one of
two problems I'm having, but I will post the second one in another post
to keep things separate and coherent. Any help one can give would be
much appreciated!

Change Fedora Releases source
by Phil Dobbin
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi, all.
I have both Beefy on a desktop machine & a laptop. On the desktop
variety, `yum update` works fine but on the laptop it's always throwing
errors (timing out, 401s, etc).
The laptop was upgraded from 12 -> 15 -> 16 -> 17 using preupgrade as &
when the new releases became available & the desktop was a clean install
from a Live CD.
What I'd like to do is check that the laptop is using the same sources
for Fedora Releases as the desktop & if, as I suspect, it's not, change
it so as not to encounter these errors.
I've tried Googling on the subject but I'm just seeing results for
`/etc/yum.repos` which are not the source files with the relevant
information I'll need so if anyone can point me to the relevant config
files, I'd appreciate it.
Cheers,
Phil...

question regarding ls w/ colors and capturing to file
by Paul Allen Newell
Fedora List:
I can run "ls -FR" on a directory and get a lovely listing with lots of
color coded information to let me know what is what. I have hit a
directory that is big enough that scrolling though the output isn't
efficient. I would like to capture the output of "ls -FR" into a file
that preserves the color coding (I don't want to read each file as I
wish to visually scan to see if something isn't right and color is a
great way to see it).
My attempts with "more" have stripped color. So has "less". Does anyone
have an idea how to capture the output of "ls -FR" that keeps the color
coding?
This is a low priority item ... just something that would be nice to be
able to do
Thanks in advance,
Paul
