Tuesday morning fun (can't get to gdm login prompt)
by Brian Johnson
Happy Tuesday all,
So, an interesting thing happened to me when I came into work this
morning....my computer was sitting at the password prompt to unencrypt my
disk so I could continue booting my machine. Apparently we had a power
outage at work last night.
So, I put in my encrcyption password and continued to watch it boot up. It
went, and went, and went and right when I thought it was going to give me
my login prompt, it...stopped. My mouse cursur is just a spinning ball of
wait. I'm never given the opportunity to log in, it's just a black screen
with my spinning cursor.
I've tried each of the different kernels on my computer, all PAE --
3.4.0-1, 3.4.4-3, and 3.4.4-5, and nothing seems to change.
However, I was just able to boot into runlevel 3, log in as myself, and run
'startx' and get in that way. When I do it, though, it runs *very*
sluggish. Gnome-shell, with nothing but an xterm, is running ~65% cpu and
my load average is running at 2.16.
I can't find anything that might have been updated that would explain the
issue. I have 3 machines all running Fedora 17, one of which I know is
completely up to date as my work computer is, and I don't see the issue on
it (had a power outage at the house this morning, so I had to reboot the
one at home as well).
Any thoughts greatly appreciated, thanks!

The bit you snipped from the top of the mail explained it - I want a
quick way of swapping in a new OS without having to mess around with the
HDs in the box.

OK.

So even putting /var on the hard disk would not help much?

I did think of that but that does not resolve all the problems - it
allows me to create a new (virtual) server quickly and swap it in when
it is ready to go - so there is not much downtime BUT then the
underlying OS doesn't get updated . . and I still have the same problem
to update that. I have been thinking about using a SSD for the OS but
it would be nice to be able to plug in a new drive without taking the
box apart - I suppose I could look for plug-n-play SSD that can be
inserted into a drive-socket in a standard CD drive bay . .
Thanks,
Phil.

Hardware vendors
by SternData
My 7 year old Dell Dimension 8400 is on its last legs, so I thought it
time to find something new:
07/07/2012 11:57:40AM Agent (Sagar A): "Hi Steve"
07/07/2012 11:57:42AM Agent (Sagar A): "Welcome to Dell US Chat! My name
is Sagar Andreas and I will be your Dell.com Sales Chat Expert.I can be
reached at sagar_andreas(a)dell.com or via phone at
*******-*******-*******-******* ext. ******* . How may I help you today?"
07/07/2012 11:58:25AM steve: "I'm pricing out desktop computers. I plan
to install Linux. I don't see an option to select "no operating system".
Is there a way NOT to pay for Windows?"
07/07/2012 11:58:48AM Agent (Sagar A): "Its my pleasure to have you on
my chat line today. I'd be more than happy to assist you."
07/07/2012 11:59:38AM Agent (Sagar A): "Steve i am so sorry we dont have
any systems which comes with Linux as call comes with windows OS"
07/07/2012 12:00:01PM steve: "That's a shame. I guess I'm done buying
Dells."
07/07/2012 12:01:01PM steve: "bye"
07/07/2012 12:01:44PM Agent (Sagar A): "i am so sorry ..."
07/07/2012 12:01:48PM Agent (Sagar A): "Is there anything else that I
can help you with?"
Now that I'm done with Dell, I've priced out systems on Ohava, zareason,
and System76. The quotes come out with insignificant dollar differences.
Do you have any experience with these vendors?
A few comments;
1) No, I don't want to assemble my own machine from parts.
2) I plan to install Fedora 17
3) Looking at a quad core i5-3550, 8GB memory, standard "intel advanced
graphics" rather than a more expensive Radeon card.
4) 500GB SATA disk
5) mini- or mid-tower case

Here's a sample of the spam bounces.
Also does anyone use DKIM? I heard that it complements SPF records but I haven't seen much of it in the wild accept with some Google Apps domains.

Production server running from USB stilck with /var on HD ?
by Philip Rhoades
People,
I have been using RH and Fedora since the beginning and love it! I
like to keep up with the latest version of Fedora on my production
server and although the install of the OS itself from a LiveCD/USB is
very fast, restoring all the other stuff takes quite a while. To reduce
downtime of the server, what I did last time was to install to a virtual
machine which used a physical HD and then to reboot on the new HD when
it was ready to go. Now I am thinking of installing to a USB stick but
having all the changeable files on /var (or anywhwere else) symlinked to
a dir on the HD for speed. What are the potential problems with this
idea? I can see:
- slower bootup

I did hat you were telling, and it works now. Thank you very much
OTHER QUESTION??
I'm using this server to communicate with smtp.auth.orange-business.com,
as you already understood and solved.
How can I use this server as a secure relay server for sending email to
orange?
I mean, use credentials, or restricting domains, connecting from the
outside world.
I wouldn't know where to put the credentials now.

Production server running from USB stilck with /var on HD ? - finished email!
by Philip Rhoades
People,
Sorry, I accidentally sent the previous note before it was finished .
.:
I have been using RH and Fedora since the beginning and love it! I
like to keep up with the latest version of Fedora on my production
server and although the install of the OS itself from a LiveCD/USB is
very fast, restoring all the other stuff (web sites, mailing lists etc)
takes quite a while. To reduce downtime of the server, what I did last
time was to install to a virtual machine which used a physical HD and
then to reboot the real server on the new HD when it was ready to go.
Now I am thinking of installing to a USB stick on a workstation, getting
it all working and then moving the USB stick to the server but having
all the changeable files on /var (or anywhwere else) symlinked to a dir
on the server HD for speed. What are the potential problems with this
idea? I can see:
- slower bootup
- less reliable media for critical files
Are there other reasons why this approach might not be a good idea?
Thanks,
Phil.

I'm trying to send email, using sendmail, with authentication port 587 and
credentials.
I modified sendmail.mc as follows:
TRUST_AUTH_MECH(`EXTERNAL DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5 LOGIN PLAIN')dnl
define(`confAUTH_MECHANISMS', `EXTERNAL GSSAPI DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5 LOGIN
PLAIN')dnl
FEATURE(`authinfo',`hash /etc/mail/auth/client-info')dnl
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp, Name=MTA')dnl
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=587, Name=MSA, M=E')dnl
the file client-info contains:
AuthInfo:smtp.auth.orange-business.com "U:<my_authentication>"
"P:<my_password>" "M:PLAIN"
I tried first to send an email via
telnet smtp.auth.orange-business.com 587
using the credentials above, which I encoded with Base64 Coder,
and it worked.
When I use
mail -s "my subject" <my email> < some_file
I get in /var/log/maillog:
Jul 8 07:54:09 godefroy sendmail[19322]: q685q9XO019320:
to=<roland(a)cat.be>, ctladdr=<roland(a)godefroy.fr> (504/500),
delay=00:02:00, xdelay=00:02:00, mailer=relay, pri=121220,
relay=smtp.auth.orange-business.com. [194.2.0.87], dsn=4.0.0,
stat=Deferred: Connection timed out with smtp.auth.orange-business.com.
When I start sendmail with:
/usr/sbin/sendmail -O LogLevel=14 -bd -X /tmp/output.log
the output.log file gives no errors, but mentions nowhere the authentication.
I'm trying to solve this for weeks now, but without result.
Can somebody help me?
