Amarok not playing m4a
by Andrea
I cant play m4a files with amarok.
They do not even appear in the list of files when browsing.
It is configured to use gstreamer and I have the following plugins installed
PackageKit-gstreamer-plugin-0.7.5-1.fc17.i686
gstreamer-plugins-bad-free-extras-0.10.23-7.fc17.i686
phonon-backend-gstreamer-4.6.0-1.fc17.i686
gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0.10.19-1.fc17.i686
gstreamer-plugins-good-0.10.31-4.fc17.i686
qt-gstreamer-0.10.2-1.fc17.i686
gstreamer-plugins-bad-0.10.22-4.fc17.i686
gstreamer-plugins-bad-free-0.10.23-7.fc17.i686
gstreamer-tools-0.10.36-1.fc17.i686
gstreamer-ffmpeg-0.10.13-2.fc17.i686
gstreamer-0.10.36-1.fc17.i686
gstreamer-plugins-base-0.10.36-1.fc17.i686
mplayer of course plays it with no problems.
Any idea what I might be missing?

md5 and setting up a serial console
by Fernando Cassia
Given that MD5 is nowadays considered unsafe
----
In 2004, more serious flaws were discovered in MD5, making further use
of the algorithm for security purposes questionable—specifically, a
group of researchers described how to create a pair of files that
share the same MD5 checksum.[4][5] Further advances were made in
breaking MD5 in 2005, 2006, and 2007.[6] In December 2008, a group of
researchers used this technique to fake SSL certificate
validity,[7][8] and US-CERT now says that MD5 "should be considered
cryptographically broken and unsuitable for further use."[9] and most
U.S. government applications now require the SHA-2 family of hash
functions
----
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MD5
I wonder if following this tutorial is safe
http://www.howtoforge.com/setting_up_a_serial_console
---
GRUB configuration
The next step is to edit the GRUB configuration, so it sends its
messages to the serial console. One of the most important things is to
set a password, otherwise anyone can connect a serial cable, edit the
GRUB configuration line while the system is booting (via the "e" key),
and get root access. When a password is set, interactive menu editing
will be disabled, unless the correct password is entered. To set the
password, we first need to get the encrypted version of it.
Run grub, and use the "md5crypt" command to encrypt the password:
grub> md5crypt
Password: ********
Encrypted: $1$AlfMq1$FxRolxW5XvSLAOksiC7MD1
Copy the encrypted version of the password (we need it for the next
step), and then type quit to exit.
Now, we need to edit the GRUB configuration. Edit the
/boot/grub/menu.lst file (by typing nano /boot/grub/menu.lst), and
find this section:
## password ['--md5'] passwd
# If used in the first section of a menu file, disable all
interactive editing
# control (menu entry editor and command-line) and entries protected by the
# command 'lock'
# e.g. password topsecret
# password --md5 $1$gLhU0/$aW78kHK1QfV3P2b2znUoe/
# password topsecret
Below that, add:
password --md5 $1$AlfMq1$FxRolxW5XvSLAOksiC7MD1
serial --unit=0 --speed=38400 --word=8 --parity=no --stop=1
terminal --timeout=10 serial console
---
I wonder:
1. is there an updated tuturial on getting a serial console working in f17?
2. since that 2007 tutorial used grub, and fedora 17 uses grub2 I
wonder if there´s also a need to specify a hashed password in a grub2
conf file, and if there are options to use a hashing algorithm
different than md5
Thanks...

I suppose that if one uses the ESMTP option, one has to install esmtp and
configure it as needed.
as discribed in :
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/opensource/send-mail-with-esmtp-for-a-si...
How do you tell sendmail to use esmtp as the email deliverer?
I dropped that line and used a authinfo file as described above and it
worked.
Probably is esmtp a simpler way to do it for different users and different
domains?

mount --move in F16
by Norman Gaywood
This sequence of commands once worked in F16 (in kernel 3.2.10-3)
mkdir -p /tmp/testing
cd /tmp/testing/
mkdir -p foo bar
mount -t tmpfs tmpfs foo/
mount --move foo bar/
Sometime around 3.3.0-4 and maybe before the last command above gives
this message:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /tmp/testing/foo,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
This is still the case in 3.4.4-4.fc16, the mount --move does not work.
However, in F17 (3.4.4-5.fc17) the above sequence works fine.
Could someone hit me with a clue stick?

F17 cursor problem : request
by Beartooth
My antiquated eyeballs have lots of trouble finding the mouse
cursor, especially when it turns itself into a very thin line, as it
often does in Pan and in gnome-terminal.
The eyeballs on the panels help some, especially if I manage to
center them. But CentOS 6 has a better way. If I choose the oxygen theme,
I can get a big fat yellow arrow. (It also turns into a line sometimes,
but even then, it's much bigger, and still yellow.
Would somebody who knows how please make this available in
Fedora, or write a pons asinorum for it? When you get seriously old,
you'll be glad you did.

Fedora 18 and UEFI
by Kevin Wilson
Hi, everyone,
I have a question about UEFI in fedora 18: I see in lwn.net article:
"Fedora's strategy is to enroll in Microsoft's developer program,
which allows the project to purchase an approved $99 key through
Verisign, a key which will be recognized by UEFI secure boot. The key
will be used to sign the shim bootloader, which is a "trivial UEFI
first-stage bootloader" whose only job is to boot GRUB2. Fedora will
also sign the GRUB2 bootloader and the kernel, although the latter two
binaries can be signed with the Fedora project's own keys.
see
http://lwn.net/Articles/503803
That this means that from F18 on, fedora will cost 99$ for every installation?

at the risk of intruding here with a suggestion of another vendor
who will load fedora or any other linux:
http://www.netexpresslabs.com
I have used them in the past with great satisfaction,
both with the ordering process and follow up on any problems.
I am likely to use them in near future again to replace
my old p4 desktop.
they do business mainly via email, so you could easily get
a quote in short order.
more of their website:

are available preloaded with UNIX, UNIX clones....."

Our address is sales[at]netexpresslabs[dot]com.

We also offer assistance in selecting the best software and hardware
for each customer and their specific application.
Please feel free to ask for advice. We don’t expect our
customers to be aware of the very latest updates in hardware and software.
That’s our job."
