enable second monitor in F14?
by Dave Stevens
I tried to uninstall OpenOffice before installing LibreOffice and
found that my proprietary ATI X driver was uninstalled too. After
sorting that out I wound up sticking with OO after all. But now my
monitors mirror each other and I don't see where/how to change to the
pan view I had before with independent display content. Suggestions?

If all the advertising in the world were to shut down tomorrow, would people
still go on buying more soap, eating more apples, giving their children more
vitamins, roughage, milk, olive oil, scooters and laxatives, learning more
languages by iPod, hearing more virtuosos by radio, re-decorating their
houses, refreshing themselves with more non-alcoholic thirst-quenchers,
cooking more new, appetizing dishes, affording themselves that little extra
touch which means so much? Or would the whole desperate whirligig slow
down, and the exhausted public relapse upon plain grub and elbow-grease?

Laptop doesn't know which display to use when docked.
by Terry Polzin
I am running xfce on F17 completely patched and current.
My laptop is a HP probook 6460b. When I boot it docked the grub screen
appears on the external display. When the boot has completed the
background screen is displayed on the external display. I get no login
prompt on the external display. I press enter a couple of times the
login display will appear and I'll log in then the external display goes
dark. I open up the laptop and it's display has the desktop on it and I
have to manually switch to the external display and discontinue use of
the laptop display. If both displays are selected for use the whole
thing wants to act like a twin head setup which I don't want.
What do I have to do to get the laptop to use the external display when
docked and it's own display when it isn't automagically. To undock the
laptop I have to reverse the display procedure of course. This also
makes it impossible to "undock and run" without making manual changes as
to which display to use.

USB modem support broken since linux-3.6.1
by Clemens Eisserer
Hi,
After updating the kernel of the Fedora-17 installation on my laptop
(from 3.5.4 to 3.6.1), both of my umts-modems aren't found anymore.
The first one (was usb0) is integrated into the notebook, the one I
typically use is an external ZTE MF652.
The ZTE's cdrom emulation (used for windows setup files) is detected,
however I can't see any new network devices created.
Is this a known issue, or should I open a bug-report?
Thank you in advance, Clemens

Xine-Check question

I have the following xine packages installed:
xine-lib-extras-freeworld-1.1.21-3.fc16.i686
xine-ui-skins-0.99.7-2.fc16.noarch
xine-lib-extras-1.1.21-2.fc16.1.i686

gxine-0.5.907-2.fc16.i686
xine-ui-0.99.7-2.fc16.i686
Xine-check seems to output some messages
that need to be perhaps changed or corrected??
$ xine-check
Please be patient, this script may take a while to run...
[ good ] you're using Linux, doing specific tests
[ good ] looks like you have a /proc filesystem mounted.
[ hint ] ummm, you're running a strange kernel version.
Your kernel says, it's version 3.4.11-1.fc16.i686, but I don't
know << So what??
anything about this version. That probably means
You should either upgrade your kernel or upgrade this script.
press <enter> to continue...
[ good ] intel compatible processor, checking MTRR support
[ good ] you have MTRR support and there are some ranges set.
[ good ] found the player at /usr/bin/xine
[ good ] /usr/bin/xine is in your PATH
[OUCH!!] no libxine.pc on this machine. <<<< I do have xine-lib
installed, but it does not install libxine.pc
This means that xine-lib is either not installed
or it is installed in a very unusual place.
So you should probably install xine-lib before running

press <enter> to continue...
[ hint ] unable to determine plugin directory <<< And what is the user
supposed to do so xine-check can determine plugin dir?
I could not determine your plugin directory. That would be
much easier
if you had libxine.pc installed (see message above)...
Note that I could not check your xine plugins.

[ good ] /dev/cdrom points to /dev/sr0
[ good ] /dev/dvd points to /dev/sr0
[ hint ] Your DVD drive seems not to be attached via ATAPI.
This might be due to the use of an ide-scsi emulation.
If you really have a SCSI DVD drive, your SCSI controller is
likely
to do perfect DMA, so there's no reason to worry about this.
However, if you're using ide-scsi, there is a chance that DMA is
disabled for the DVD drive. Moreover, I don't know how to enable
DMA in that case, so you probably have to live with some
performance
loss. (FIXME: check for /proc/ide, provide solution) <<<
There is no /proc/ide

Contact list for KDE user?
by Timothy Murphy
As far as I can see, KAddressBook/Kontact has become
completely non-functional,
with entered contacts being entirely invisible
except when exported as a CSV list.
In my experience, KAddressBook has always been pretty bad,
but it has now become, as I said, completely useless.
(I asked about this on the KDE mailing list,
but the only response I got was from someone else
who said he had the same experience.)
I'm beginning to think that maybe Google Contacts
is the only practical solution?

Gimp Stuck
by Jonathan Allen
Dear List,
I've got my Gimp stuck. File->Open and it locks - the only way out is
force-quit. It can do recently open, but the main 'open' dialog and
the save-as dialog are both guaranteed lockups. Any ideas?

Idea ´unbrand´ meta-package
by Fernando Cassia
Is there a meta-package name encompassing all trademarks and bitmaps
copyrighted by Fedora? (guess not)
In other words, I want to create a Fedora re-spin VM, it´d be great if
there was a single package name I could remove (ie something like "rpm -e
fedora-branding") and end up with a system that I can start customizing
while knowing there´s not a single piece of conflicting trademarks or names
left behind.
Thoughts? Ideas? Expletives? ;-) *joke*

Removing openjdk after switching to oracle java
by Junayeed Ahnaf
Hello,
I changed to oracle jre & jdk which is working fine. Now I need to remove openjdk, but when I give "yum remove java-openjdk" it wants to remove 575 MB of files (which includes vize and eclipse and LO).
Can't I *just* remove the openjdk?
