Re: Buy an SSD now, or wait?
by J.Witvliet@mindef.nl
Returning to the topic,
Regarding radiation and ssd,
The only place i would seriously advise not to use ssd's is in satelites. As cosmic rediation has serious effect on even hard backed rom's and dynamic mem....
So unless you've booked a trip at virgin, or planned to stay at the ISS, you're probably safe....

What they are also not teaching you about is the number of now ripe old people
who have been living in the exclusion (high radiation) zone after refusing to
move out. They seem to live quite normal and healthy lives as do the herds of
wildlife, horses and so forth.

Clean Installs are Remarkable
by Fedora User
I cannot believe that we are at F16. I clearly recall RH9 to FC-1. But I
digress. I know that others have said this in the past. I just thought
that I would reinforce the notion that clean installs remove a large
number of annoying problems that persist through upgrades. Moreover, it
is refreshing to start with a clean desktop; something that has become
a palette for the way we think and do things.
It has been awhile and I was unaware of the many advances that
developers have made in installation. It has never been this easy,
intuitive and fast.
I was in a Walgreens the other day and picked up a bunch of Sony DVD's
for 40 cents each. There was a time when burning a DVD through Linux
was a considerable challenge. Now it is routine --- and cheap. The
perfect excuse for backing up the accumulated bytes; It makes you think
what you really want to retain. Then wiping the HD clean.

fedora equivalent of recovery disk
by Paul Allen Newell
I have been following the "fedora causes laptop to overheat" as my HP
dv6500 is showing signs of malfunctioning, potentially an overheating
issue. Display flickers, part of it get dim, and then it goes black.
Computer is still up and running as I can ssh into it.
I've looked into the BIOS options to see if there is any diagnostic info
I can get and nothing there. I was hoping that someone on the
overheating thread might mention a way to validate if the fan is working.
I'm resigned to a repair job, but that means I have to strip off Fedora
and put the original Vista back on (ick) if I want anyone to take a look
at it. Pain in the you-know-what, but it a good machine and my only x86_64.
Before I consider actually doing it, I wanted to ask if there is the
equivalent of "a recovery disk" that I can create with k3b so, assuming
the problem is fixable, I can reinstall without having to go back to the
original install disk (and then go through all the customizations and
additional downloads). I've look on the Fedora docs (installation_guide)
and didn't see anything. I am presuming that this is something that
exists and I just haven't been able to google the right thing (or I've
googled and not seen it as the right thing).
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Re: Buy an SSD now, or wait?
My "gut feelings" are generally much more accurate than the science and
money world's facts.. A "gut feeling" tells me that the existing SSD's
will be liquidation antiques, in just a couple months, the moment the
tight-wad mfgr's release the new evolutions they've already got in
production.. just waiting to sell of as much old stock as they can, to
recoup losses... My people are waiting for the new stuff to come out...
But don't quote me on this.. it's just a hunch...

Re: Help with some configurations in F16

Thanks -- the shell extensions worked.
Anyone have an idea for fixing xsane so it will recognize
my scanner by default (it can't find it via scan as it is on
a different subnet).

Script for testing all files on a drive ?
by linux guy
I am having an issue with my laptop. I've found some corrupt files on
an SSD drive. I need to know exactly how many are corrupt and which
ones they are.
I've run various block check and surface scan tools and they all come
up with zero errors.
I found the corrupt files when I was attempting to back up every file
on the drive with a simple cp command.
I would now like to run a script that checks every file on the drive
and puts the name and path of every corrupt file into a text file for
further processing.
What is the easiest way to do this ?
Thanks

strange left-handed mouse behaviour with xfce after new kernel
by mike cloaked
I have an odd problem with a particular user setup in f16 - the
machine is running x86_64 f16 fully up to date - one user out of
several on the machine needs to have the mouse set to left-handed and
all users are running xfce as the desktop.
Everything works beautifully including for all users including the
user with the mouse set to left-handed until a new kernel is installed
- then for all right-handed users there is no problem after booting to
the new kernel - but the first login after rebooting to the new kernel
gives strange mouse behaviour for the left-handed user, and a right
click (i.e. a left click for a right-handed typical user) to logout
with the green running man icon does not respond to give the logout
options - various clicks onto other menu options eventually gives a
logout - logging back in all is well and there is no issue at all -
until the next time a new kernel is installed and the same thing
happens just on the first login after rebooting the new kernel.
This problem does not occur for any other user (all others have
right-handed mouse).
I don't know what component to file a bugzilla report under for
this..... any other left handed users see this with xfce?
Anyone aware of a bz report I can look at on this?
This has only happened with f16 - previously the machine was running
f14. On a different machine also running f16 but with i686 the same
issue occurs for the left-handed user and not for right-handed users -
so it would seem an issue somewhere in xfce but I don't know where?
Thanks

Help with some configurations in F16
by Wade Hampton
Greetings,
I am trying to configure my new Fedora 16 computer and am having
a lot of success. Things are working well, however I have a few
things I would like to tune.
How can I enable the minimize button on windows?
How can I change so double click does not maximize windows?
How can I persist xsane settings so my wireless scanner works
without having to call via a script (it is on my 192.168.1 network
but I am on 192.168.2 so the auto-discovery does not work).
It works well but I have to manually launch with:
hpaio:/net/Photosmart_C6100_series?ip=192.168.1.120
I can't launch it automatically via GIMP.
I am also trying Picasa 3.9 but it is crashing when I try to
upload pictures.... Any ideas?
Happy Holidays,

as already explained, thread was already open: I will not spend any more
time (that I don't have) to add any single line why I didn't (or I forgot to)
add the description of Openfoam...
