Set up serial console for fedora 16
by Derek Tattersall
I am in the process of setting up a router/file server using F16. I
would like have the boot messages go to the serial console.
How do you do that in F16?
It seems to use a different version of grub than other versions, and
what worked in F14 won't work in F16. I think. Or will it?
Thanks.

Why updatedb doesn't traverse my external HD?
by Marko Vojinovic
Please someone explain me the following ---
[root@Yoda ~]# updatedb
[root@Yoda ~]# locate teraipo
/dev/disk/by-label/teraipo
[root@Yoda ~]# ll /media/
total 4
drwxr-xr-x. 17 vmarko vmarko 4096 Nov 15 00:49 teraipo
In addition, nothing under /media/teraipo/ can be located using "locate". Not
a single file in the 1.5 TB archive, on an external ext4 hard drive:
[root@Yoda ~]# mount | grep teraipo
/dev/sdb1 on /media/teraipo type ext4
(rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,seclabel,user_xattr,acl,barrier=1,data=ordered,uhelper=udisks)
Before anyone points out that updatedb doesn't traverse /media by default, let
me add that I already knew that and have removed /media from PRUNEPATHS:
[root@Yoda ~]# cat /etc/updatedb.conf
PRUNE_BIND_MOUNTS = "no"
PRUNEFS = "9p afs anon_inodefs auto autofs bdev binfmt_misc cgroup cifs coda
configfs cpuset debugfs devpts ecryptfs exofs fuse fuse.sshfs fusectl gfs gfs2
hugetlbfs inotifyfs iso9660 jffs2 lustre mqueue ncpfs nfs nfs4 nfsd pipefs proc
ramfs rootfs rpc_pipefs securityfs selinuxfs sfs sockfs sysfs tmpfs ubifs udf
usbfs"
PRUNENAMES = ".git .hg .svn"
PRUNEPATHS = "/afs /mnt /net /sfs /tmp /udev /var/cache/ccache /var/spool/cups
/var/spool/squid /var/tmp"
I have also configured bind mounts to be traversed, hoping that it might fix the
problem with /media. It didn't.
This configuration used to work on F14. Skipped F15, clean-installed F16, if it
matters.
I'm out of ideas. Anyone?
Best, :-)

New computer today and trying to install F16 on it. Seems it has UEFI,
and when trying to install, during partitioning, get error about not gpt
disklabel and think saw one bout stage1 . I see /boot and /boot/efi mount
points to choose from, does one of them need to be selected? Thought
heard bout bios boot but don't see that option anywhere. Downloading
parted magic to guess try and do a gpt disk label or something as well?
Kinda lost on this EFI stuff.
Thanks for help ahead of time.

Grub2 upgrade issue.
by Michael D. Setzer II
I'm working on upgrading my classroom lab from Fedora 14 to 16
and doing a test on one system. Most things have gone ok with a
few issues.
1. X11 didn't come up after the upgrade from dvd, but deleting
xorg.conf fixed that.
2. Running yum update afterwards would found over 400 updates,
but it would crash even with --skip-broken. Fixed that by using
yumex, and doing small groups of updates, and then skipping just
the ones that caused problem.
3. Desktop icons missing from programs that were there before.
installing gnome-tweak-tool seems to have gotten what I want.
4. Issue with grub.conf update. Didn't notice that there was a
change in the grub process. The new grub2 got the Fedora
options, and the os-probe seems to have gotten the XP that is on
the machine. Two other options that were in the original xorg.conf
are missing, and the memtest was also gone. Got memtest by just
running the setup process, but not clear what would be the best
option for the other two. Perhaps the 40_custom. Remotely
accessing the system from home via VNC, so thought might get
some expert advice.
Here are the old lines from the grub.conf
title G4L
kernel /bz3x1.4 ramdisk_size=65536 root=/dev/ram0
telnetd=yes
initrd /ramdisk.lzma
title G4L Restore XP
kernel /bz3x1.4 ramdisk_size=65536 root=/dev/ram0
telnetd=yes run="mount /dev/sda6 /mnt/local && cd /mnt/local &&
./reimagexp "
initrd /ramdisk.lzma
The first option loads my diskimaging project into ram and allows
access from anther machine behind the firewall to run it remotely.
The second option is able to restore the Windows XP from an
ntfsclone image stored on /dev/sda6, which allows the quick
restore of the XP in about 10 minutes for any reason.

Buy an SSD now, or wait?
by Christopher Svanefalk
I just wondered if anyone here has had any experience in using SSDs in
general, and with Fedora in particular? I am thinking about an upgrade, but
I am uncertain whether it is worth it to invest in an SSD now, or let the
technology ripen for a few more years. I believe the SSD market will expand
massively in the coming years, and with that, innovation and development in
the field as well, so waiting seems more reasonable at this stage. Any
thoughts?

Fedora vs openSUSE
by Rameshwar Kr. Sharma
Hello community,
This has been a great news for me that I am going switch to Linux from
Windows XP, I am bored using it, many viruses and also high cost to
maintain. Apart from it, I came to know that there are many linux and
more specifically distributions. So really speaking, I am a bit
confused between them, want to give try to Fedora but a picture of
opensuse comes in mind, then some other distribution...While I know
that these are fedora mailing list and anyone is going to give
directions for only Fedora, but can one honestly tell me the
differences between Fedora and opensuse? I came to know from some
people that not to try Ubuntu (I don't know why they said so) and said
that most of the people in Ubuntu mailing lists are more of dumbs, so
I have claimed this question here only but I am really new -- what you
guys think the best, please do tell me....
Now since my mind has become a little negative for Ubuntu, I just
wanted to know the truth (remaining) between opensuse and Fedora, and
for rest of the distributions more -- I would really not look for I
would be confused more.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Openfoam is available!!!
by Antonio M
Openfoam is available for F15 and F16, both 32 bit and 64 bit.
On the download page http://www.openfoam.com/download/fedora.php I
think that the instruction module load openmpi-x86_64 should be read
module load openmpii386 in case of 32 bit.
Shall it be included in the official repos???

BIOS doesn't see hard drive with Fedora 16, may it be an install issue?
by M. Fioretti
Greetings,
we just installed Fedora 16 x86_64 KDE spin on an Intel DH61CR board,
from the live CD. New computer, no other OS is installed.
The live CD worked fine, no problem with the installation. However,
now
1) if booting from the network is enabled, the motherboard ONLY tries to
boot from the network, forever
2) if booting from network is disabled, I just get this error message:
"a bootable device has not been detected"
3) if I press F10 at boot I get a PARTIAL BIOS menu. By partial I mean
that I ONLY see a screen that asks me to change boot priority among:
detected hard drive (the one on which we had just installed F16)
detected dvd/cd drive
network
if I select the hard drive the system boots into Fedora 16 WITHOUT
ANY TROUBLE AT ALL. But since in that menu there is NO entry as
usual saying "press F9 or F10 to save settings" or similar (that's
why I said "partial bios menu") that choice is not saved
4) if I press F2 at boot I do get the complete boot menu, but no
matter what I select as priority order, or what I disable, in the
BOOT screen, I am back at point 1 or 2 above
I am already investigating on the BIOS side, ie checking the docs and
so on. My question here is only if there may be anything in how F16
was installed (using or not the MBR for grub, choices of partitions
etc) that may cause a problem like this, and if yes how to fix it.
of course, any comment and help is appreciated, even if not specific
to Fedora.
TIA,
Marco
