Interesting Totem and OpenOffice.org Writer Interaction
by Mark LaPierre
Hey Y'all,
Just an observation, not a bug report.
I just discovered an interesting interaction between Totem Movie Player
2.32.0 using GStreamer 0.10.31 and OpenOffice.org Writer 3.3.0
There is a bug that causes OpenOffice.org Writer to spontaneously open
the menu bar when Totem is running. It's like you're accidentally
hitting the [Alt] key. Very interesting. Even happens when you are not
typing in the OpenOffice.org Writer screen. It only happens when Totem
is actively playing a music file. When the playback ends so does the
odd behavior. Weird hey.

Sound not working
by Mike Chambers
Got a new system today and got F16 up and running and it all seems to be
in order, cept my sound. It works in windows with no problems, but not
Fedora. Maybe not recognizing the drivers, or not being loaded or
something. Below it the spec for the machine...
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03042936&tmp_task=pr...
This is from lspci and the only Audio part that I can see...
00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] Hudson Azalia
Controller (rev 01)
Maybe someone can see what I need to enable/do/whatever to get it
working?
Thanks ahead of time,

After a while, dolphin, konqueror (and other KDE apps) won't start...
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello Everyone,
I am running KDE 4.7.3 on a fully updated fresh install (not an upgrade)
of Fedora 16. If it is relevant, I am running an NVidia based video
card with the default open source Nouveau driver. Also, the problem I
am about to describe occurs when I am running a full KDE session, not
when I am attempting to run KDE applications from GNOME or some other DE...
My problem is pretty simple: after being logged into a KDE session for a
while, for reasons that I have not yet narrowed down, I am no longer
able to start at least the following applications:
Dolphin
Konqueror
Kwrite
Kate
Ksysguard
(There may be others...)
Let's say I login to a fresh KDE session. All of the above listed
applications start and function perfectly. Then, let's say I have
closed all instances of the "offending" KDE applications. If I attempt
to start one of them from KRunner, it just does not start. No error
message, nothing to indicate WHY it did not start. If I try running one
of the above listed applciations from a terminal to see any error
messages that will be displayed, absolutely NOTHING is displayed on the
terminal. For example, if Dolphin won't start, and I attempt to start
it from a terminal, it will look exactly like this:
steve@localhost ~$ dolphin
No output whatsoever...
I think that I can start Konsole just fine when those other apps won't
start. Next time this problem starts up, I will make sure. But I do
|remember trying to start Dolphin from Konsole last night, with results
like those shown above. So I'm pretty sure that Konsole is not affected
by this.
Also, I THINK that this might be related: when I try to log out of KDE
when this problem is occurring, it just silently fails. Translation, I
attempt to log out (using "Kickoff Application Launcher | Leave | Log
out" and nothing happens. So, I do "Ctrl | Alt | Backspace" (which does
take me out of the KDE session and to the login screen) and attempt to
log back in. The KDE splash screen comes up, but it seems to hang on
the first icon (the one that looks like a harddrive/disc drive of some
sort.) If I reboot, I can log into KDE perfectly.
So any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Well, I've tried preupgrade now...
by Tom Horsley
...and probably won't try it again :-(.
It took two or three times longer than installing from scratch.
Worse yet, it took over the MBR on a machine where I had Windows
7 and Fedora and had previously very carefully avoided clobbering
any DELL magic in the MBR by using the Windows boot loader to do
the multi-booting of Windows and Fedora.

With the latest updates, I seem to have lost the ability to map Caps

Understanding logwatch
by Timothy Murphy
I skip through logwatch on a couple of machines each day,
to see if any disasters have occurred.
But I don't really understand many of the entries,
or rather their significance.
Eg today:
--------------------- iptables firewall Begin ------------------------
Dropped 6 packets on interface eth0
From 87.230.101.22 - 1 packet to tcp(25)
From 124.229.7.16 - 3 packets to tcp(25)
From 190.2.0.221 - 2 packets to tcp(25)
---------------------- iptables firewall End -------------------------
So should I ignore these strange people?
And
--------------------- samba Begin ------------------------
**Unmatched Entries**
nmbd/nmbd_incomingrequests.c:process_name_refresh_request(173)
Error - should be sent to WINS server : 564 Time(s)
---------------------- samba End -------------------------
What is an "unmatched entry?
I guess I'm looking for a beginners' guide on
"Logwatch entries and what to do about them"?

Some businesses and professionals need an extremely secure OS lock, that even the best of the best can't crack...
by Linda McLeod
I lost the encrypted login PW for one of my many hd's, and found that I
can easily over-ride to restore it if I do a little cracking with
codes.. The data was easily found in a Google search, which means that
an encrypted OS isn't really a locked OS.. So I'm wondering how can we
have sure-fire fool-proof crack-proof keys that maintain a private
corporate computer totally safe and private from the crazy world's
bullying and messing..?
Do you suppose a flash drive can somehow made to be the only key that
opens an OS..?
Can there be layers of keys in a key..?
I.E.: ones multi-layered PW might be something like:
"18erty
239de
frosset (for this one the user must wait "5-seconds" of no keyboard
activity before being keyed in)
18
su78
ddhe"

default browser settings in Thunderbird changed by updates overnight
by Claude Jones
Clicking an html link from within a Thunderbird message now opens
Chrome. It has been set to Firefox for a long time. This appears to have
changed since yesterday, and last night I did run a huge number of new
updates.
Funny thing is, the settings in about:config in Thunderbird still
dictate firefox as the preferred browser:
network.protocol-handler.app.ftp;/usr/bin/firefox
network.protocol-handler.app.http;/usr/bin/firefox
network.protocol-handler.app.https;/usr/bin/firefox
Checking "System settings\Default Applications\web Browser" (in KDE)
also shows Firefox configured as default browser
Where else can this behavior be controlled. I would like to know which
package update caused this behavior to change so I can file a bug
report, but I'm not sure. Looking at the long list of updates last
night, there were updates for both Firefox and Thunderbird, but not for
Chrome. I can't imagine Thunderbird changing the defaut browser to open
from links, and the settings still seem correct.
Ideas?
