SELINUX is kicking my butt!
by John Aldrich
I just installed a new boot drive and installed F16. Since I
absolutely HATE SELINUX, I've gone into the config file and set
selinux to "disabled." Now when I attempt to boot, I get an error that
it can't find the policy file and it hangs the system and won't let it
go any further. How do I fix this???? Do I just copy the policy file
from another location or what???

Switch 32 bit to 64 bit how to do
by sterntaler.10@googlemail.com
Hello,
I would like to switch my server from 32bit to 64bit (8GB of RAM) . What
is the best method to do that ?
Can I upgrade my running FC14 from 32 to 64 and and then I will
preupgrade to FC16.
Or should I install a fresh FC16 64 bit.
I have found and old document about crossupgrade:
http://osdir.com/ml/fedora-devel-list/2009-04/msg01601.html
does this work ? Has anybody here on the list done this task in the near
past ?
Thanks for any hint

About Fedora Security? Drums machines? Fedora distros? Background configs?
by Linda McLeod
For various security reasons my work computer is almost never
net-connected, except occasionally, to make critical updates.. Which
networking programs do I disable or uninstall to clean-out the packages
I don't need in Fedora-14..? How do I uninstall any "key-loggers from
the F-14, 15, & 16 OS"s..? How do I get into the controls where a
novice can reconfig F-14, 15, & 16, to eliminate unwanted never-used
parts of the OS, without damaging the operation of the OS of this
speciality PC, which is exclusively for Gimp artwork, music creating &
editing, and creative writing..?
In what ways is Fedora vulnerable to cracker activities..? and how do I
close & lock those doors..?
Is there a Linux drum-machine that plays congas, bongos, and speciality
drums..?
Will there ever be specialized Linux distro's: "Fedora Gimp", "Fedora
FocusWriter", Fedora-Music..?
Are there any top-quality distro's in these areas done in F-14..?
Which packages do I need in F-14 to add Gimp & FocusWriter as much as
possible into the OS..?
Have you noticed, that more of humanity is becoming more and more
creative "by the hour"..? Soon user-friendly OS's, which cater to the
needs of genius, artisan, & creative people will be in high demand...
What would you have if you married/blended Fedora with Scientific
Linux..?
Is there a package that makes different background pix in choice of
desktop workspaces..?
Would be so nice.. with just a mouse click, if I could eliminate my pix
editing desktop screen the moment prying restricted-eyes are
approaching...

How to tell a radeon chip it is connected to a TV
by Göran Uddeborg
We're using a F15 MythTV system as a DVB receiver. It displays via
SCART on an old CRT PAL TV. So there is no signalling from the TV to
the computer specifying the properties of the display.
We have created an xorg.conf file with a Monitor section with the
appropriate Modeline configuration. This works fine. Once X comes up
everything is ok.
But during the boot before X starts, the TV can not display the
signal. I guess it isn't possible to do anything about that during
the initial BIOS boot.
But isn't it possible to do it when the radeon driver takes control?
It seems it ought to be possible, but we haven't succeeded so far.
We've tried to use various boot options, but can not see any obvious
effect.
Is there a way to do this?
Graphics: Radeon HD 3200
Current kernel option (not working): video=radeon:720x576-32@25i
Modeline in xorg.conf (works fine, from http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/RGB_Scart):
ModeLine "720x576" 15.125 720 778 834 968 576 579 607 625 -hsync -vsync interlace

System hang under F16
by Bill Murray
Dear Fedora group,
Yesterday I updated the lastest F16 fixes. E.g.
mesa-dri-drivers-7.11-11.fc16.i686
today, twice, the system has hung completely as I opened a
new window. The new window was different on the two occasions;
emacs last time.
/var/log/messages has nothing in it.
How should I debug?

System locked up during update of kernel, yum in unclean state and kernel half-installed
by Deron Meranda
I'm running Fedora 16 and I attempted to install the most recent set
of released updates (from fedora-updates - I'm not using the testing
repo), using "yum update".
While it was installing the kernel package
(kernel-3.1.1-2.fc16.x86_64), the entire system locked up. It was
unresponsive to anything, even mouse movement or network access. There
was no disk access either from what I could tell. I left it that way
for a long time, and finally was forced to do a hard power-off.
After the reboot I'm not sure exactly what state my system is in, and
I may need some guidance to get it back up to normal. It is running
now, but I think the installed packages may be a bit mixed up.
This system does not have any history of having a hard lock-up. I have
been having a few Gnome freezing issues since F16, but the kernel and
OS has never locked up.
Output of "yum check" shows it's not clean:

cat /proc/version

So the -2 revision must not have gotten fully installed.
What are my next steps? If it was just a normal application package,
I'd force a yum re-install. But since this happened during a kernel
update, I don't want to risk messing my system up further.

Help keep logfile clean :-).
by Tom Horsley
I've been trying to figure out how to get rid of the endless
drivel systemd related stuff keeps spewing to my log file,
and I think I finally got most of it:
I made the file /etc/rsyslog.d/systemd-drivel.conf
which contains these lines:
:programname, isequal, "systemd-logind" ~
:msg, contains, "Activating via systemd" ~
:msg, contains, "Activation via systemd failed" ~
:msg, contains, "org.freedesktop.systemd" ~
After getting rsyslogd restarted, that make it discard
all the junk that tended to make up 90% of my
/var/log/messages file.
That should help keep my SSD drive from running out of
space, and make it possible to see messages that might
actually be important in the log.
