gnome-terminal "paint" issues?
by Brian Ericson
I'm having "one-off" issues with gnome-terminal on my laptop. At the
bottom of the terminal, the results of a command typically (but not
always) don't display until I hit "enter" a second time and PgUp/PgDown
in man pages or vim oftentimes don't do anything (then, when the key is
hit again, the result will be 2x rather than 1x).
Anyone know what might cause this?

I made tree tries, none worked:
- The VAIO notebook doesn't have a BIOS option to turn off the ATI video. But it has a "stamina/speed" tootle on the keyboard. Under Windows, changing the toogle makes the screen go blank for a few seconds and back, supposedly to change the video driver. I tried to keep the tootle on "stamina" and reboot, then I created a xorg.conf for the intel video driver. Didn't worked. (But is "intel" the correct Xorg driver for the Intel HD graphics from the sandy bridge chipset?)
- ATI released a new proprietary driver, version 11.11. I saw conflicting resports about this fixing or not fixing Gnome Shell issues. For me it didn't worked.
- I tried keeping the tootle on "speed" and created a xorg.conf using the driver "radeon". (This is the open source driver, right?) But it didn't worked.
I have not tested the external monitor using the vesa driver (basic video), which is the only one working so far. If it doesn't, the notebook will be pretty close to useless to me. I refuse to use Windows and doing my Linux work unside a VM.

I'm talking about the xorg driver, is it the same as the kernel module?
How can i find the chipset name?

bash update killed my shells
by Maciek Borzęcki
A recent bash (that's my suspicion) update to bash-4.2.10-5.fc16.i686.rpm
wiped 'almost clean' my /etc/shells, leaving only nologin and dash behind,
breaking pkexec.
Anyone else seeing this or am I barking at the wrong tree here?
Cheers,

NetworkManager, dbus, systemd wackyness
by Tom Horsley
Every single time I start firefox, or claws-mail, or for all
I know anything else that does any kind of network activity,
I get messages like this in /var/log/messages:
Nov 17 19:40:48 zooty dbus[964]: [system] Activation via systemd failed for unit 'dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service': Unit dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service failed to load: No such file or directory. See system logs and 'systemctl status dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service' for details.
Nov 17 19:40:48 zooty dbus-daemon[964]: dbus[964]: [system] Activation via systemd failed for unit 'dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service': Unit dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service failed to load: No such file or directory. See system logs and 'systemctl status dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service' for details.
I have NetworkManager disabled. I have even tried removing
the files in /etc/dbus-1/system.d/ that define the NetworkManager
service, and that is probably what produces the above errors
instead of the previous slightly different ones I was getting.
Does anyone have a clue what in the blue blazes systemd is
doing to make it try so hard to start NetworkManager on any
network activity? And better yet, a clue how to make it stop :-).
Maybe my logs would be cleaner if I just changed the
NetworkManager dbus service definition to run /bin/true
so it would think it started it?
Currently 99.9% of my /var/log/messages file consists of
either the above messages or other ones that say:
Nov 17 19:44:01 zooty systemd-logind[953]: New session 434 of user tom.
Nov 17 19:44:02 zooty systemd-logind[953]: Removed session 434.
which apparently happen at least every 5 minutes when my cron
job runs fetchmail.

f16 booting as f15, /boot/grub2 empty...
by Brian Ericson
Just upgraded my desktop to f16. I note that I see no boot loader (just
a blinking cursor for a bit), and then it proceeds to boot as though I'm
still on f15 (and, in fact, boots into the "2.6" kernel). Checked out
/boot/grub2 and the only thing in it is an empty grub.cfg file.
This is in contrast to my laptop, which I also just updated, which has a
real boot menu (and even shows my useless windows partition!), a
grub.cfg file, a bunch of .mod files, some .lst files, ...
Anyone know what happened and what to do to resolve this so my system
boots properly into f16 with the 3.1 kernel?

Can't start portgresql after F15 -> F16 upgrade
by Digimer
Hi all,
After upgrading from Fedora 15 to Fedora 16, something broke with
postgresql.
First, I can't tab-complete 'systemctl status postgres.service', but
that's relatively minor.
The real concern is that I can't start the service at all;
lework:tools# systemctl start postgresql.service
Job failed. See system logs and 'systemctl status' for details.
lework:tools# systemctl status postgresql.service
postgresql.service - PostgreSQL database server
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/postgresql.service; disabled)
Active: failed since Thu, 17 Nov 2011 13:36:54 -0500; 3s ago
Process: 4757 ExecStart=/usr/bin/pg_ctl start -D ${PGDATA} -s -o -p
${PGPORT} -w -t 300 (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
CGroup: name=systemd:/system/postgresql.service
I tried uninstalling reinstalling all of the postgresql RPMs, but got
the same results.

F13->F16 via preupgrade: feasible?
by Tim Largy
Is it feasible to go from F13->F16 via preupgrade? The Installation
Guide mentions "For example, you can upgrade from Fedora 14 to Fedora
16 directly." Great. In this regard is there any real difference
between F13 and F14?
