Anybody using lxdm or slim with xfce?
by Konstantin Svist
I tried switching the default login manager (gdm) to lxdm, but it just
crashes after I enter my password.
lxdm writes a bunch of errors into /var/log/lxdm.log:
** Message: find greeter (nil)
** Message: find idle (nil)
xauth: file /var/run/lxdm/lxdm-:0.auth does not exist
** Message: add xserver watch
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyuse: X [:<display>] [option]
<help for command line options>
I've also tried SLiM - it lets me in, but a bunch of things don't work
in the xfce shell -- volume control is busted, NetworkManager seems to
randomly forget the wifi passwords, and so on.

Help w/ F15 on Dell M4600 Precision Laptop purchase decision
by Dean S. Messing
I'm at the point of ordering a Dell M4600 laptop. I plan to run either
F15 (or F16). Wanting very much to avoid tears and depression later,
I'd like to briefly know your good and bad experiences. The laptop has
been out since April and yet there is no Linux-on-Laptop page for it.
I'm aware of the touchpad and hibernate issues, though that info is from
the summer and under Ubuntu, but I can't find much state-of-art info.
Does anyone here have HDMI video output working under the latest fedora
kernels and binary nvidia driver?
Also, I'm particularly concerned about the CPU frequency stepping
problems I've read about. The machine seems to runs full throttle for
some people. I don't know if this is a real problem or just user
error. I'd appreciate any current info on this!
Here are some salient machine specifications:
Processor: Quad-core i7-2620
Memory: 4G 1333MHz (I'll upgrade later w/ non-Dell)
Graphics: Nvidia Quadro 1000M
Display: 1920x1080 Anti-glare wLED-backlit
Storage: 500GB hard drive (I'll upgrade later w/ non-Dell)
Thanks very much for your help!

Bullies get into FireFox, and make a mess in F-14, way too easily, forcing me to DBAN the hd & reinstall...
by Linda McLeod
The bullies who have been targeting my PC with computer problems have
got into FireFox yet again, changing things..
Top too-bar is inoperative..
Fastmail logins are non-functional..
Spellcheck is non-functional..
And sometimes the bullies make the Google search-page be in German,
Dutch, or French...
Thus it would seem that FireFox is Fedora's weakest security, given that
the monsters get into OS's via browsers...
Is FireFox addressing these issues any time soon..?
Any ideas when FireFox might be secure enough to prevent such
blacky/hacky/cracky/bully activities..?
Is there a way to reasonably secure FireFox from such skilled attacks..?
I'm supposing I need to reboot into an older option to shake the bugs..?

Fedora 16+ uid numbers
by Frank Murphy
I hope to change all of my real\virt stuff boxes
rather than reinstall all from F16 on.
I have F14,15,16,Rawhide.
I have a proprietry linux NAS (Storcenter ix-200)
with lots of folders for different users.
and I will backup /etc /home
on the boxes first.
How do I upgrade the uid numbers.
eg: Newly installed user Adam
(any relation to anyone living or dead is purely coincidental) :)
How do I get the files from the NAS, Backups to match the new UIDs.
Same for GID if necessary.
Had a quick Google:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/changing-user-ids-...
but don't wan't to trip up.
